WhatsApp Developing Feature to Link Instagram Profiles to Accounts
WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to link their Instagram profiles to their WhatsApp accounts. According to WABetaInfo, this development aims to integrate users’ social media presence within the messaging platform, facilitating seamless connectivity with their contacts.
The feature was identified in WhatsApp for iOS beta version 25.2.10.72, available through the TestFlight beta program. However, it remains inactive and is still under development, meaning beta testers cannot access it at this stage. A screenshot shared by WABetaInfo indicates that WhatsApp is introducing an “Add Links” section within profile settings, where users can add their Instagram usernames by tapping a plus (+) icon. This addition will make their Instagram profiles visible on their WhatsApp accounts.
Notably, the current implementation does not require users to authenticate the Instagram profiles they link, allowing them to manually enter any username. This raises potential concerns regarding privacy, impersonation, and identity theft. However, it is anticipated that WhatsApp will introduce an authentication step before the feature is officially launched to ensure security and authenticity.
The Instagram linking option is expected to remain optional, giving users the choice to integrate their profiles or not. A similar feature already exists for WhatsApp Business accounts, where businesses can link their Instagram profiles but must authenticate them manually through login credentials.
At present, the feature appears to support only Instagram, but there is speculation that WhatsApp could extend it to other Meta-owned platforms, such as Facebook and Threads. It remains uncertain whether third-party social networks, such as X (formerly Twitter) or Snapchat, will be supported in the future.
WhatsApp has not officially announced a release date for this feature. However, given its appearance in beta testing, a wider rollout can be expected in an upcoming update.
