Why Telugu Stars Are Making Fewer Films Today: Insights from D Suresh Babu

As seasoned stars like Nagarjuna, Chiranjeevi, and Balakrishna continue to expand their filmographies—with Nagarjuna launching his 100th film with Ra Karthick, Chiranjeevi gearing up for his 171st under Srikanth Odela, and Balakrishna announcing his 111th with Gopichand Malineni—Venkatesh, currently at 77 films, still has a long way to reach the century mark. Producer D Suresh Babu, Venkatesh’s brother, notes, “I am not sure if he will reach 100 films since he would need another 23 movies, and that looks difficult.”

Suresh Babu recalls that the working patterns of legendary actors like NTR, ANR, and Krishna were very different. “They used to do 8–10 films a year, with Krishna crossing 300 films by shooting 15 annually. Bollywood actor Jeetendra once told me that an actor shouldn’t waste a single day and should work all 365 days. That kind of energy belonged to another era,” he says.

Film counts were consistently higher between the 1950s and 1990s. Chiranjeevi would do four films a year, Nagarjuna two or three, and Balakrishna maintained a similar pace. Today, Suresh Babu explains, the focus has shifted to quality over quantity. Even superstars like Prabhas, Mahesh Babu, Allu Arjun, Jr NTR, and Ram Charan have fewer than 30 films each, despite decades in the industry. He notes that earlier generations often worked to sustain their households or out of sheer passion, whereas the second generation grew up in more secure financial conditions and became selective, choosing films that excite fans.

Modern actors often juggle business interests and typically work only 6–8 months a year, prioritizing work-life balance without undue pressure. With Telugu cinema reaching a global fan base, superstars are meticulous about script quality, execution, VFX timelines, and multi-language shoots, leading to fewer annual releases. Suresh Babu adds, “Even Bollywood and Kollywood stars now have fewer films each year. Hundreds of crores ride on every project, and patience has become key to capturing audience attention.”
