Why Two Powerful Sisters Are Rooting for Their Brothers’ Political Defeat

Share

In most families, daughters hope for harmony in their parental home, and sisters pray for the prosperity and well-being of their brothers. Their sense of happiness often comes from seeing their birth home at peace and their brothers doing well. This bond is usually beyond expression.

However, in the Telugu states, an unusual political dynamic is drawing widespread attention. Two prominent sisters — one in Andhra Pradesh and another in Telangana — are openly wishing for the political downfall of their own brothers. This unexpected turn has become a major talking point across both states.

In Andhra Pradesh, Y. S. Sharmila has been vocal about wanting her brother, former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, to lose political ground. Her public statements and election-time speeches have repeatedly targeted Jagan, making it evident that her priority is defeating the YSRCP rather than strengthening the Congress. Even today, her political narrative begins with criticism of her brother.

In Telangana, K. Kavitha finds herself at odds with her brother, BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao (KTR). After her suspension from the BRS, Kavitha’s displeasure became public. During the Jubilee Hills bypoll campaign, she questioned KTR’s leadership style, criticising his limited direct engagement with voters and hinting that the party’s defeat might serve a larger purpose. Her statements suggested she would prefer to see the BRS lose rather than support her brother’s leadership.

Both states are witnessing a strikingly similar pattern: sisters challenging their brothers due to strained political equations, legacy issues, and internal family disputes over authority and influence.

As Sharmila and Kavitha intensify their political moves, many are discussing how these two sisters seem to derive satisfaction from seeing their brothers face electoral setbacks. It is a rare and dramatic chapter in the politics of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana — one where family ties are overshadowed by political rivalry.
