Modi at 75: Retirement or Exception?

Share

With Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to turn 75 on September 17, political circles are abuzz with speculation about whether the BJP will adhere to its unofficial age limit rule. The party has traditionally maintained that leaders above 75 should retire from active politics — a precedent that has shaped many leadership decisions in the past.

The debate intensified after recent remarks by RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, who, without naming anyone, referenced the idea of stepping aside at a certain age as a mark of wisdom and responsibility. His comments triggered a political storm, with the Congress party suggesting it was a veiled message directed at Modi, given his deep ties with the RSS.

Ironically, Bhagwat himself will cross the same age threshold just days before Modi. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh didn’t miss the opportunity to respond with a pointed jibe, calling it a “two birds with one stone” scenario — suggesting both leaders should consider stepping back together.

The BJP’s age guideline has not always been consistently applied. While senior leaders like LK Advani and Venkaiah Naidu were eased out upon crossing 75, exceptions have been made — most notably in the case of Karnataka’s BS Yediyurappa, whose political influence led to a relaxation of the rule.

This brings the spotlight firmly on Modi, who has led the BJP and the country for over a decade and remains the party’s most recognizable face. As his milestone birthday approaches, the nation watches closely: will the BJP stick to its principle, or will Modi’s leadership be deemed the exception once again?
