Will It Be Varma vs Balayya?

The announcement made by maverick film maker Ram Gopal Varma that he would make a film on legendary actor and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N T Rama Rao has triggered an interesting debate in the media and film circles.

The latest announcement from Varma came in the backdrop of senior actor and Telugu Desam Party MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna’s plan to make a biopic on his father covering all aspects of his life. Balakrishna said he would play the role of his father.

On the other hand, Varma said his film was not exactly a biopic on NTR, but it will have focus on the latter’s widow Nandamuri Lakshmi Parvathi.

He declared that he would expose the truths and lies of those who stabbed in the back of NTR, obviously referring to TDP president and present AP chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

The TDP camp is apprehensive that if Varma makes the film with focus on Lakshmi Parvathi, he would definitely project Naidu in bad light. That is precisely why TDP spokesman Babu Rajendra Prasad said the film would not be allowed to run in theatres unless it got clearance from Naidu.

But, Varma said he would care two hoots for the TDP leaders.

“Who the hell is this Babu Rajendra Prasad? I never heard of him. Nobody can deny my right to make a film on NTR, just as his family members have. There is definitely some speciality in Lakshmi Parvathi, otherwise, she would not have become NTR’s wife. You cannot tear, or burn or wipe out history,” Varma said.

Now, the question is who will have the last laugh on NTR’s biopic. As the things stand now, neither Balakrishna nor Varma has the resources or guts to make the film on NTR. They are looking for some scapegoat producers to make the film. And one doubts either would do justice to the film!
