X Tests AI Bots for Community Notes

X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has announced a new pilot initiative that will allow artificial intelligence (AI) bots to contribute to its Community Notes feature. Beginning this month, a select group of developers will be granted access to tools that enable them to create “AI Note Writers” — automated agents capable of drafting fact-check-style notes on posts.

Initially, these AI-generated notes will appear only in a limited “test mode” and will require human approval before becoming publicly visible. To ensure transparency, they will be clearly labeled and restricted to posts where users have specifically requested a Community Note.

According to X, the move aims to significantly boost the speed and scalability of producing informative notes. “Not only does this have the potential to accelerate the speed and scale of Community Notes, rating feedback from the community can help develop AI agents that deliver increasingly accurate, less biased, and broadly helpful information — a powerful feedback loop,” the company said in a statement.

These AI-generated contributions will be assessed by an open-source automated system, which verifies that the content is relevant, non-abusive, and consistent with previous human-written notes. However, the ultimate decision on whether an AI-written note is displayed rests with the platform’s community of human raters.

X stressed that AI bots must “earn the ability to write notes” by consistently providing content that offers value to a diverse range of users.

In a conversation with Bloomberg, Keith Coleman of X acknowledged the efficiency gains brought by AI but reaffirmed the need for human oversight. “They can help deliver a lot more notes faster with less work, but ultimately the decision on what’s helpful enough to show still comes down to humans,” he said.

This initiative marks the latest step in X’s broader strategy to integrate AI tools while preserving transparency and trust through crowd-sourced verification.
