Seoul, February 3 (IANS) – Detained South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol held a significant meeting with key figures from the ruling People Power Party (PPP), calling for unity within the party to bring hope to the nation’s youth and the wider public. The meeting took place at the Seoul Detention Centre in Uiwang, south of Seoul, where Yoon is currently being held.

According to Rep. Na Kyung-won, who attended the meeting, Yoon urged PPP leaders, including interim party leader Kwon Young-se and floor leader Kweon Seong-dong, to unite in a common cause to address the challenges facing South Korea, particularly the concerns of young people in their 20s and 30s. The talks also covered broader concerns regarding South Korea’s future in the context of the changing international political landscape and the global economy.

Yoon addressed the controversial martial law declaration, asserting that it was a necessary action taken out of a sense of responsibility to prevent the National Assembly from becoming dominated by the opposition Democratic Party, potentially leading to a “one-party dictatorship.” The martial law decision, made on December 3, was a pivotal factor leading to Yoon’s impeachment on January 19, on charges of insurrection and abuse of power.

Meanwhile, the South Korean police have intensified investigations into the Presidential Security Service (PSS), which is under suspicion for obstructing official duties. The raid on the PSS office, located within the presidential compound in Yongsan, Seoul, is part of an ongoing probe into allegations that PSS officials attempted to block investigators from executing a warrant to detain Yoon last month.

Acting PSS chief Kim Seong-hoon and Lee Kwang-woo, head of the PSS bodyguard division, are accused of using their positions to obstruct the investigation. The police seized two phones from each official, one personal and one work-related, which were linked to a secure server located at the PSS office. The police had previously requested arrest warrants for Kim and Lee, but both requests were rejected by the prosecution.

The political and legal turmoil surrounding Yoon’s detention has raised concerns about South Korea’s political stability, while also highlighting the deep divisions between the ruling party and opposition factions. The unfolding events continue to capture national attention as the future direction of the country remains uncertain.
