YouTube Rolls Out AI Likeness-Detection Tool to Protect Creators from Deepfakes

YouTube has officially rolled out its likeness-detection technology for creators enrolled in the YouTube Partner Program, following a successful pilot phase. The new tool enables eligible creators to detect and request the removal of AI-generated videos that mimic their face or voice without consent.

According to a YouTube spokesperson, this marks the first wave of a global rollout. Notification emails were sent to eligible creators on Tuesday morning. The initiative aims to safeguard creators from misuse of their likeness in videos that could falsely endorse products, spread misinformation, or damage reputations.

The move comes in response to several high-profile incidents involving unauthorized AI use — including a case where electronics company Elecrow used an AI-generated version of YouTuber Jeff Geerling’s voice to promote its products.

On YouTube’s Creator Insider channel, the company explained how the tool functions. Creators can access the new “Likeness” tab, agree to data processing terms, and scan a QR code via their smartphone. This directs them to an identity verification page requiring a photo ID and a short selfie video.

Once verified, creators gain access to a dashboard showing all detected videos featuring their likeness. From this interface, they can submit removal requests under YouTube’s privacy policies, file copyright complaints, or archive videos for record purposes.

Participation in the program is entirely optional, and creators who opt out will have all data scanning halted within 24 hours.

YouTube began testing the likeness-detection tool earlier in 2025 in collaboration with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to help celebrities, athletes, and influencers identify deepfake content on the platform.

The company has also expressed support for the proposed NO FAKES Act, a U.S. bill aimed at restricting the creation and distribution of deceptive AI-generated replicas that imitate real individuals for malicious or misleading purposes.
