YSRCP U-Turn on Amaravati After Election Defeat

One of the most controversial policies introduced by former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy was the three capitals proposal, which aimed to decentralize governance by designating Amaravati, Visakhapatnam, and Kurnool as legislative, executive, and judicial capitals respectively. However, this move ended up backfiring politically and administratively.

The YSRCP government neither succeeded in enhancing the existing capital at Amaravati, nor could it effectively transform Visakhapatnam into a functioning capital city. This indecision and disruption surrounding the capital issue played a major role in YSRCP’s stunning electoral downfall — dropping from 151 assembly seats to just 11 in the recent elections. The public clearly rejected the three capitals plan, seeing it as a destabilizing and poorly executed move.

Now, in a surprising turn, it appears that YSR Congress is walking back on its earlier stance. Former minister Jogi Ramesh, a close confidant of Jagan, recently stated that if the YSRCP returns to power, Amaravati will be developed into a world-class capital.

“We have understood the people’s verdict. They did not approve of the three capitals proposal. In our next term, Amaravati will be developed comprehensively as the sole capital,” Ramesh said.

This sudden shift in narrative is being viewed with skepticism. Given the YSRCP’s earlier dismissal and neglect of Amaravati, many see this new stance as politically convenient rather than genuine. The party’s credibility has taken a hit, and regaining public trust on the capital issue might be an uphill battle.

As Andhra Pradesh moves forward under new leadership, the fate of Amaravati — and the legacy of the three capitals debacle — remains a key point of reflection for voters and parties alike.
