Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday called for stronger measures against Russia, urging sanctions and the provision of long-range strike capabilities to Kyiv.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Zelensky said that in just one week, Russia launched over 1,500 strike drones, 1,280 guided aerial bombs, and 50 missiles of various types against Ukraine. He highlighted that thousands of foreign-made components were found in this weaponry, totaling more than 132,000 items sourced from Europe, the US, China, Japan, and several other nations.
Zelensky warned that if Russia is not stopped, it could become a threat to European and Indo-Pacific countries. “Russia must feel the consequences of its actions. Sufficient counteraction is needed to force them to seek peace. This requires strengthening our army, expanding long-range strike capabilities, and enforcing strong sanctions and pressure against Russia,” he said.
He added, “All these technologies help Russia produce weapons on a massive scale — all aimed at terrorizing our people. Strong sanctions are essential to stop this. We must cut off all supply routes and prevent sanctions evasion, exerting pressure on countries and companies aiding Russia. We rely on the 19th EU sanctions package to be impactful, and the US must join these efforts. I thank all those already assisting us.”
Earlier, on September 19, the European Union proposed its 19th package of sanctions against Russia. EU Vice-President Kaja Kallas outlined measures targeting key sectors that sustain Russia’s war effort.
Kallas stated, “Our sanctions bite. They have a visible impact on Russia’s public finances and economic growth. The EU must continue reinforcing these efforts collectively with its partners until peace is achieved.”
The proposed measures include a full transaction ban on Russian banks and financial institutions, including those operating in third countries; sanctions on major economic operators facilitating Russia’s military industry and revenue generation; and restrictions on Russian credit card and fast payment systems.
Additionally, the EU plans to ban investments in Russian Special Economic Zones linked to the war, target Chinese actors supporting Russia’s military industry, and fully prohibit Russian LNG imports by January 2027. The package also includes lifting exemptions for Rosneft and Gazprom Neft and sanctioning Russia’s shadow fleet and its enablers, covering 118 new vessels.
