Rajamouli’s Varanasi Gears Up as a No-Limit Budget Epic

There is no denying the fact that S S Rajamouli is currently the biggest commercial filmmaker in Indian cinema. When it comes to scale, vision, and refined storytelling, no one comes close to matching his cinematic standards. Naturally, his upcoming magnum opus “Varanasi” is already generating massive buzz for its sheer ambition and grandeur.
Unlike most big-budget films where producers work within a fixed financial framework, Rajamouli has reportedly adopted a completely different approach for this project. He has chosen not to impose any strict budget cap, instead instructing the producers to focus solely on delivering the best possible cinematic experience. The philosophy is simple—whatever is required to bring his vision to life will be provided without compromise.
Varanasi stars Mahesh Babu in the lead role, marking the actor’s first-ever collaboration with the ace director. The film also boasts a powerful ensemble cast including Priyanka Chopra, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and Prakash Raj, lending the project strong pan-Indian and global appeal.
Planned as a large-scale action drama enriched with mythological undertones and deep emotional layers, the film is being designed for a massive global release in multiple languages. Staying true to his working style, Rajamouli has reportedly opted for a profit-sharing model instead of taking a hefty upfront remuneration. This decision enables the production team to invest heavily in visual effects, production design, and high-octane action sequences.
The makers are confident that a significant portion of the investment will be recovered through pre-release business alone. With shooting expected to be completed by 2026 and a theatrical release planned for 2027, Varanasi is widely expected to set new benchmarks in Indian cinema and redefine large-scale filmmaking once again.
