Unni Mukundan’s Marco Faces TV Ban Over Extreme Violence
Unni Mukundan’s Marco, hailed as the most violent Malayalam film ever made, is now facing hurdles in securing television rights.
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has denied the producers’ request to reclassify the film from an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate to a ‘UA’ (Parental Guidance) rating, which is essential for television broadcasting. Citing the film’s extreme violent content, the CBFC also rejected its satellite rights for TV screening.
In a further development, the regional officer of the CBFC has sought the Centre’s intervention to prevent Marco from being streamed on OTT platforms as well.
Meanwhile, the Film Employees Federation of Kerala has strongly criticized political leaders and youth organizations for linking recent violent incidents in society to the themes explored in films.
Reacting to the controversy, Marco’s producer, Shareef Muhammed, clarified that the film was never meant to promote violence. He also assured that his next project, Kaattalan, will feature a toned-down approach to violent content.
Directed and written by Haneef Adeni, Marco was released in December 2024. The action-packed thriller revolves around the power struggle between gangster Marco and the influential Adat family as they attempt to dominate Kerala’s gold mafia.
