Samantha’s Missed Movie Opportunities: Key Films She Turned Down

When it comes to film careers, the movies that top stars reject often become more intriguing than the ones they actually sign. Many actors later reveal that they were considered for certain films but couldn’t take them up—especially when those projects turn into major hits. Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who has been one of the most in-demand actresses in South Indian cinema for over 15 years, is no exception. She too has a list of films she missed due to busy schedules or turned down by choice.

One of the biggest films she couldn’t do was Pushpa. After Samantha’s standout performance in Rangasthalam, director Sukumar reportedly wanted her as the female lead. However, scheduling conflicts prevented her from taking the role, and Rashmika Mandanna was cast instead—an opportunity that propelled Rashmika to new heights. Even so, Samantha made a massive impact with her sensational special song in Pushpa: Part 1.

Samantha also turned down what could have been a major Bollywood debut. Karan Johar is said to have approached her for the lead role in Student of the Year. At that point, Samantha’s South Indian career was booming, and she felt that shifting to Bollywood might disrupt her momentum. She declined, and the role went to Alia Bhatt, who shot to nationwide fame with the film.

In Telugu cinema, Samantha was the first choice for Ram Charan’s Bruce Lee (The Fighter), but her packed schedule forced her to opt out. Rakul Preet Singh was brought in instead. Interestingly, the film did not fare well at the box office.

She was reportedly considered for Jr NTR’s Jai Lava Kusa as well but chose not to take it up. Another notable film she passed on was Nani’s Dasara. After Samantha declined, the role went to Keerthy Suresh, who delivered one of the most praised performances of her career.

These examples show that even the biggest stars miss or walk away from major opportunities. Some of the films Samantha skipped turned into blockbusters, while others didn’t create much impact. That’s the unpredictable nature of cinema—where timing, choices, and chance play as big a role as talent.
