Box Office Numbers: Fact vs. Fiction
Nowadays, movie promotions are no longer limited to just songs and trailers—they’ve become a numbers game. Many film teams now inflate their box office collections on posters to generate hype and grab attention.
Take Suriya’s latest film Retro as an example. While industry insiders suggest that the movie didn’t even cross the ₹100 crore mark at the box office, the official poster from Suriya’s own production house boldly claims a whopping ₹235 crore gross. This huge discrepancy raised many eyebrows and sparked debates on social media.
So, what’s behind this massive figure? The ₹235 crore number includes not just theatrical earnings but also non-theatrical revenues like OTT rights and satellite deals, mentioned only in small print at the bottom of the poster. However, by highlighting this combined total as if it were pure box office revenue, the makers ended up inviting more criticism and trolling than applause.
This isn’t an isolated incident. Several other films have used similar tactics, declaring numbers that don’t accurately represent their actual theatrical performance. As a result, fans have become increasingly skeptical of such claims—and understandably so.
