Sanya Malhotra Breaks Barriers with Mrs. and Beyond!
Sanya Malhotra is riding high on the success of her latest film, Mrs. A remake of the acclaimed Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen, this Arati Kadav directorial has resonated deeply with audiences, sparking important conversations around gender roles and societal expectations.
In the film, Sanya portrays Richa, a vibrant young bride who finds herself trapped in a rigidly patriarchal household, where her life is reduced to endless domestic chores. Her dreams—especially her love for dance—are cast aside, forcing her to confront the harsh realities of her new life.
“Mrs. empowered me,” Sanya shares. “These are the values I strive to reflect through my work. Stories like these need to be told so that young women feel inspired to choose themselves and their passions over societal constraints. We need to redefine gender roles.”
Now nine years into the industry, Sanya made her debut with Aamir Khan’s Dangal in 2016 and has since built a strong filmography, featuring critically acclaimed performances in Pataakha and Pagglait, along with commercial hits like Badhaai Ho and the blockbuster Jawan. Despite her impressive versatility, she remains one of Bollywood’s most underrated talents.
The actor embraces challenging roles and refuses to be typecast. “The industry knows I can be trusted with any role. Since Dangal, I’ve been very conscious about not being boxed in. I want to explore every kind of character and go all out,” she affirms.
However, Sanya admits that the competitive nature of the industry can be overwhelming. “At times, I wonder if I’m doing enough, especially on social media. It’s tough, and there are moments when I feel lost. But my team and family keep me grounded.”
Prioritizing work-life balance, she acknowledges that fame and opportunities are never constant. “Being in films isn’t everything. A few years down the line, I might explore something entirely different. I don’t want to restrict myself—whether in my career or personal life. Right now, I love what I do, but who knows what the future holds?”
Up next, Sanya will be seen in Toaster opposite Rajkummar Rao and in Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, co-starring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor. With her fearless approach to acting, she continues to carve her own unique space in the industry.
