Bollywood actress Dia Mirza recently shared a deeply personal and harrowing experience from four years ago, recounting the challenges she faced during a difficult pregnancy at the age of 39. Dia revealed that a sudden bacterial infection, likely triggered by an appendix surgery, put both her and her unborn child’s lives at serious risk.
By the sixth month of her pregnancy, Dia experienced internal bleeding and sepsis, which necessitated an emergency delivery. Her son, Avyaan, was born prematurely, weighing a mere 810 grams, and was immediately admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Within the first 36 hours, Avyaan underwent a critical surgery to repair a perforation in his intestine. The procedure required the creation of a stoma, where part of his intestine was brought outside the body to heal.
Throughout this difficult period, Dia remained on intravenous antibiotics for several weeks while fervently hoping for her son’s survival. Adding to the emotional strain was the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely limited her hospital visits to just twice a week, preventing her from holding her baby for extended periods.
Upon finally bringing Avyaan home, Dia took on the responsibility of managing his complex care herself. After gaining sufficient weight and strength, Avyaan underwent a second surgery to reverse the stoma. The young boy is now on the path to recovery, bringing immense relief and joy to the family.
Dia Mirza’s courageous sharing not only highlights the fragile nature of premature births but also underscores the resilience and determination of parents navigating such extraordinary challenges.
