Amaravati Debate: Jogaiah’s Remarks Spark Political Tensions in AP

Harirama Jogaiah, a respected senior political commentator and prominent figure from the Kapu community, has been a consistent voice in Andhra Pradesh politics. His opinions, often valued for their insights, have earned him admiration, particularly from Jana Sena Party (JSP) leader Pawan Kalyan. Recently, Jogaiah raised concerns over the proposed Rs 50,000 crore expenditure on the Amaravati project, questioning the financial wisdom of such a large-scale investment. While acknowledging the need for a capital region in Andhra Pradesh, he emphasized that constructing the secretariat and the High Court should be done on a more modest budget.

Jogaiah’s remarks, however, were met with strong criticism from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Cabinet Minister Nimmala Rama Naidu took to defending Amaravati, describing it as the lifeline of the state. Naidu argued that Amaravati is a self-financing project crucial for the future of Andhra Pradesh and expressed disappointment over Jogaiah’s comments, suggesting they echoed the rhetoric of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YCP). He also highlighted that the state, having struggled without a capital for five years under the leadership of Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, must see Amaravati materialize this term to prevent the state from remaining without a capital permanently.

The ongoing debate over Amaravati’s future is central to the political discourse in Andhra Pradesh, with both TDP and JSP expressing differing views on how to proceed with the capital city’s development. As discussions unfold, the issue remains a defining topic for the state’s political landscape.
