Canada to Send 10,000 Invitations for Parents and Grandparents Program

After temporarily halting new invitations under Canada’s Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) in January 2025, the government has now announced plans to resume issuing invites for sponsoring parents and grandparents for permanent residency. On March 7, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) revealed that it will accept up to 10,000 complete applications for sponsorship under the PGP this year.

This new development reverses the previous stance that no new invitations would be issued in 2025, with the focus instead on processing applications from the 2024 intake. The IRCC will use a pool of interest to sponsor forms from 2020 and send out invitations to randomly selected potential sponsors, mirroring the approach used between 2020 and 2024.

This decision ensures that previously submitted interest forms will still be honored, providing clarity for many hopeful sponsors. The IRCC has emphasized that this process is designed to reduce the backlog, improve processing times, and enhance efficiency in family sponsorship applications.

Although the exact timeline for sending invitations remains unclear, the government has promised to release further details in the upcoming months. This shift aligns with Canada’s broader immigration strategy, reflecting a continued commitment to family reunification and ensuring fairness in the sponsorship process. The focus on the 2020 pool aims to meet the ongoing demand for the PGP while managing the system’s efficiency.
