US President Donald Trump has announced an extension of the ceasefire with Iran while also ordering the continuation of a naval blockade, stating that Tehran must first present a “unified proposal” before any further negotiations can proceed.
In a statement posted on Truth Social on Tuesday (local time), Donald Trump said the decision followed a request from Pakistan’s leadership and cited internal divisions within Iran’s government as a key reason for the delay in talks.
“Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured… we have been asked to hold our attack on the country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal,” he said. He further added that the US military has been directed to maintain the blockade and extend the ceasefire until meaningful proposals are submitted and discussions reach a conclusion.
The announcement came just hours before the existing two-week ceasefire was set to expire, creating fresh uncertainty around the next round of peace negotiations.
Following the development, US Vice President JD Vance cancelled his planned visit to Islamabad for the second round of talks with Iran. A White House official confirmed that the trip was called off as Washington awaits clarity from Tehran.
Iran has not confirmed its participation in the upcoming discussions and has reportedly demanded the lifting of the US blockade as a precondition for returning to negotiations, according to international reports.
Pakistan, which has been mediating between the two sides, welcomed the extension of the ceasefire. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked Donald Trump for agreeing to extend the truce to allow diplomatic efforts to continue.
Despite the extension, tensions remain high. Earlier, Donald Trump warned that military action remains on the table if negotiations fail to progress.
The US continues to enforce a strict maritime blockade targeting Iranian ports and oil shipments, with reports indicating that multiple vessels have already been redirected since the operation began.
In response, Iran has threatened escalation, including the possibility of closing the Strait of Hormuz if the blockade continues — a move that could significantly impact global oil supply routes and energy markets.
With the ceasefire extended but diplomatic progress uncertain, the standoff between the two sides remains in a delicate and high-tension phase.
