The Telangana RTC strike has intensified further following the tragic death of driver Shankar Goud, triggering widespread tension across the state. He reportedly attempted self-immolation during a protest at the Narsampet depot and later succumbed to severe burn injuries in the hospital. The incident has sent shockwaves through RTC employees and sparked protests across several depots.
The unrest appears to be deepening, as a few other workers also allegedly attempted extreme measures during the ongoing strike but were prevented in time. This reflects the growing anxiety and frustration among employees over job security concerns.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed shock over the incident and held late-night review meetings with ministers to assess the situation and prevent further escalation. The government has assured support to the bereaved family and indicated its willingness to hold discussions with union representatives to resolve the issue.
At the core of the agitation is the fear among workers regarding potential job losses due to the introduction of electric buses and increased involvement of private operators. Employees are also expressing dissatisfaction over transfers and contractual employment practices, which they believe are impacting job stability.
With protests spreading and tensions rising, the government faces mounting pressure to intervene swiftly. The outcome of upcoming negotiations is expected to play a key role in determining the direction of the crisis.
