Dussehra Clash Akhanda 2 vs OG Ahead of Kantara Storm

Dussehra has traditionally been one of the most lucrative seasons for Telugu cinema, often marked by high-stakes releases and intense competition at the box office. This year promises no less, as two major films—Balakrishna’s Akhanda 2 and Pawan Kalyan’s They Call Him OG—are locked in for a high-voltage clash on September 25. However, the festive release calendar has become even more crowded, with Kantara Chapter 1 now slated to hit theatres on October 2, coinciding with Vijayadasami.

From a production standpoint, both Telugu biggies appear to be on track. They Call Him OG has completed its shoot and is currently in post-production. Meanwhile, Akhanda 2 is in the final leg of filming, with only one song left to be shot. The makers are confident of wrapping by the first week of August and sticking to their planned release date.

The immediate challenge, however, lies not in their direct competition, but in the arrival of Kantara Chapter 1 just a week later. The prequel to the blockbuster Kantara carries immense anticipation, particularly in the Telugu-speaking states where the original film was a surprise box office juggernaut. Its release so close to OG and Akhanda 2 could dilute second-week collections, impact audience footfall, and intensify the battle for screen space.

While two major films releasing during festival weekends is a familiar scenario in Tollywood, the entry of a third heavyweight within such a narrow window raises concerns over theatre allocation, sustained word-of-mouth momentum, and long-term box office viability for all three titles.

With high stakes and star power driving each project, Dussehra 2025 is shaping up to be a true litmus test for fan loyalty, content strength, and strategic release planning in Telugu cinema.
