OpenAI has elevated Hyderabad-born technology expert Uday Ruddarraju to the position of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Compute, placing him in a crucial leadership role as the company continues to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure capabilities.
Ruddarraju joined OpenAI in 2025 after serving as the Head of Infrastructure Engineering at Elon Musk’s AI company xAI. He recently announced his new role through a LinkedIn post, stating, “I’m stepping into the CTO, Compute role at OpenAI.”
Reflecting on his journey at OpenAI, Ruddarraju said his first year with the company has been highly rewarding. He highlighted the efforts of the Compute team in rapidly expanding capacity, strengthening systems, and supporting the development and training of advanced AI models.
He also revealed that OpenAI has an ambitious roadmap ahead for its compute infrastructure, with major focus areas including large-scale distributed systems, advanced hardware, manufacturing, and data centre development.
“There is a lot to build across large-scale distributed systems, hardware, manufacturing, and data centre builds spanning civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering. We’re hiring exceptional people across the stack,” Ruddarraju said.
Born and educated in Hyderabad, Ruddarraju completed his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology (CBIT). During his college years, he gained industry experience through an internship at Amazon Web Services (AWS).
He later pursued a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in the United States.
Ruddarraju has built an impressive career across several leading technology companies. He worked at eBay from 2013 to 2017, where he held roles related to cloud and platform engineering. He later joined Robinhood, where he spent nearly six years and took up multiple technical leadership positions.
In 2024, he joined xAI as Head of Infrastructure Engineering, before moving to OpenAI in 2025 as Head of Compute and Infrastructure. With his latest promotion, Ruddarraju will now lead OpenAI’s compute strategy and play a key role in scaling the infrastructure required for next-generation AI models.
His appointment has brought recognition to Hyderabad’s growing contribution to the global technology ecosystem, especially in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
