As tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate following a fresh wave of US airstrikes, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has shared details of his high-profile discussions with Steve Witkoff, the special envoy to US President Donald Trump.
In an interview with Iran’s state-linked Mehr News Agency, Araghchi described the negotiations as taking place under constant military pressure, claiming Iranian officials had to conduct diplomatic talks while fearing the possibility of imminent American strikes.
Recalling one of his conversations with Witkoff, Araghchi said he asked the US envoy whether he had ever negotiated under the constant fear that the meeting itself could come under attack.
According to Araghchi, he told Witkoff:
“Have you ever been in a meeting where you thought it could be bombed at any moment? Have you ever been on a phone call wondering if it might be your last? Have you ever spoken to your family thinking it could be the final conversation?”
The Iranian minister said these remarks reflected the intense psychological pressure faced by Tehran’s negotiating team during discussions with the United States.
Despite the circumstances, Araghchi asserted that Iran refused to give in to pressure.
“We stood our ground. You have to talk. You can’t threaten us, and you can’t bribe us,” he said during the interview.
Araghchi and Witkoff first established diplomatic contact during nuclear negotiations last year, and according to the Iranian minister, communication between the two has continued intermittently since then.
The remarks come at a time of heightened military confrontation between Washington and Tehran, with both countries exchanging strong statements as the security situation across West Asia continues to deteriorate.
