The conflict between the United States and Iran intensified further on Sunday, with the US launching a fresh wave of military strikes against Iranian targets as tensions across West Asia continue to rise.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it had begun its ninth consecutive night of operations, targeting Iranian military capabilities that it claims have been used to threaten commercial shipping and civilian vessels passing through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
According to CENTCOM, the latest strikes are aimed at degrading Iran’s ability to carry out attacks against maritime traffic in the region.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said Iran had suffered significant military damage following the American strikes.
Speaking to reporters, Trump claimed that Iran had been “very badly damaged” and asserted that the United States now has control over the Strait of Hormuz. He also stated that the objective of the ongoing military operations is to eliminate any possibility of Iran developing nuclear missile capabilities.
On the Iranian side, state broadcaster Press TV reported multiple explosions near Mahshahr, Imam Khomeini Port, and Tabriz, with air defence systems activated in several regions, including Konarak in southern Iran.
The broadcaster also claimed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) carried out a retaliatory strike targeting a US special operations command centre in Al-Tanf, Syria. According to Iranian media, the operation was described as a response to what Tehran called repeated American aggression.
Iran also reiterated its claim that it continues to maintain full control over the Strait of Hormuz despite US assertions.
Elsewhere in the region, Kuwait’s armed forces announced that their air defence systems intercepted hostile drones following what they described as Iranian aggression.
In another development, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported a maritime incident off the coast of Oman, where a vessel caught fire near Kumzar. The exact cause of the incident remains under investigation.
Reports from Iranian media also claimed that explosions were heard in Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates, although independent confirmation was not immediately available.
CENTCOM also confirmed that US military personnel recovered unidentified remains believed to belong to a service member reported missing after an Iranian attack in Jordan on July 17. Identification procedures are currently underway.
Separately, the US military confirmed that an American service member was killed during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone in northern Iraq. Another service member sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical treatment.
Additionally, CENTCOM stated that US forces continue enforcing maritime security operations in the region. It said several commercial vessels had been redirected to ensure compliance with ongoing naval security measures.
The latest developments underscore the rapidly escalating confrontation between Washington and Tehran, raising fresh concerns over regional stability, maritime security, and the possibility of a wider conflict across West Asia.
