Iran–US Tensions Escalate: Drone Strike Reported in Sea of Oman

Iranian forces have reportedly launched drone attacks targeting US military vessels in the Sea of Oman, following the seizure of an Iranian commercial ship by American troops. The development, reported by Iran’s Tasnim news agency, signals a sharp escalation in already heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington amid a fragile regional ceasefire.

According to the report, the drone strikes were carried out as a direct response to the US action against an Iranian-flagged vessel. However, details regarding the scale of the attack, the number of drones used, or any potential damage to US assets have not been disclosed.

The incident follows an announcement by the US that it had seized an Iranian cargo ship allegedly attempting to breach its blockade. In response, Iran warned of retaliation and also stated that it would not participate in a second round of negotiations that Washington had hoped to initiate before the ceasefire expires on Tuesday. The ongoing blockade has also contributed to rising global oil prices, adding economic pressure to the geopolitical standoff.

The US continues to maintain a blockade of Iranian ports, while Iran has intermittently restricted maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, handling nearly one-fifth of global oil supply.

The US military confirmed that it fired on an Iranian-flagged cargo ship bound for Bandar Abbas, Iran. President Donald Trump stated on social media that US forces had taken control of the vessel and were inspecting its cargo.

Iranian officials claimed the ship had been traveling from China, and a military spokesperson described the US action as “maritime piracy,” warning of imminent retaliation.

Iran’s First Vice President, Mohammadreza Aref, also commented that restricting Iran’s oil exports while expecting free global trade is unsustainable, adding that the situation forces a choice between a free oil market or broader economic consequences.

Meanwhile, tensions have further escalated with threats exchanged on both sides. Trump has previously warned of strikes on Iranian infrastructure if Tehran refuses US demands. In response, Iran has cautioned that any attack on its civilian infrastructure would be met with strikes on power stations and desalination facilities in neighboring Gulf countries.

The situation continues to remain volatile, with growing concerns over its potential impact on regional stability and global energy markets.
