Khamenei Criticizes Calls for Talks, Claims They’re About Imposing Agendas

Tehran, March 9 (IANS) Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, stated that the push from certain “bullying” powers to engage in talks with Iran is not intended to resolve issues, but rather to impose their own demands. Khamenei made these remarks during a meeting in Tehran with government officials on Saturday, responding to US President Donald Trump’s call for negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program, as reported by his office.

Khamenei emphasized, “Their negotiation is not for resolving issues, but for dominating and imposing their will on the other side.” He also warned that if Iran refuses to engage, these powers would accuse Iran of “distancing itself from and abandoning the negotiating table.”

Khamenei stressed that the nuclear issue is not the only concern of these powers, as they continue to raise new expectations, which Iran will not meet. He pointed out the criticism from Britain, France, and Germany, accusing Tehran of not fulfilling its 2015 nuclear deal commitments. Khamenei reminded that these European countries have also neglected their obligations under the same agreement, particularly following the US’s withdrawal from the deal.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed by Iran and six world powers in July 2015, imposed restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. However, the US’s exit from the deal in 2018 and the reimposition of sanctions led Iran to reduce some of its nuclear commitments.

In response to Trump’s recent comments on negotiating the nuclear issue, Khamenei’s office stated that Iran has not received any communication from Trump as of yet.
