Kyiv, March 9 (IANS) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed details about an upcoming meeting between American and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia, aimed at negotiating peace talks amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
In a post shared on Saturday on X, Zelensky stated, “Today, a highly productive meeting took place in Kyiv between the diplomatic teams of Ukraine and the UK. We discussed steps to bring us closer to peace and accelerate diplomatic efforts. I’m grateful for the support. Ukraine is determined to do everything to end this war with a just and lasting peace as soon as possible.”
This upcoming gathering marks the first high-level meeting between US and Ukrainian officials since the February 28 meeting between Zelensky and US President Donald Trump. Additionally, Zelensky confirmed that a meeting took place between Ukrainian and UK diplomatic teams to discuss ways to achieve peace.
Earlier, during a European leaders summit in London on March 2, Zelensky expressed his strong appreciation for the support Ukraine has received. At the summit, the future of Ukraine and its relationship with Europe were central topics of discussion.
During his recent visit to the UK, Zelensky and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also addressed the challenges Ukraine and Europe face, and efforts to achieve a just peace with strong security guarantees.
Earlier this year, the UK and Ukraine signed a 100-year partnership agreement, calling for Ukraine’s recovery and committing to fostering technological innovation, among other areas of focus.
Looking ahead, Zelensky announced that he would be visiting Saudi Arabia next week, where he will meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, followed by talks with the American team. “Next week, I will begin with a visit to Saudi Arabia. After my meeting on Monday with the Crown Prince, Ukrainian diplomatic and military representatives will stay for a meeting with the American team on Tuesday. The Ukrainian delegation will include Andriy Yermak, Andriy Sybiha, Rustem Umerov, and Pavlo Palisa,” Zelensky said in his post.
He also reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to constructive dialogue, adding, “We hope to discuss and agree on the necessary decisions and steps. Ukraine has been seeking peace from the very first second of this war. Realistic proposals are on the table. The key is to move quickly and effectively.”
Meanwhile, US envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed he would be meeting with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia to discuss an “initial ceasefire” and a “framework” for a longer-term agreement.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the talks would be held in Jeddah.
