Ideally, a state assembly is meant to function as a progressive and serious legislative space where crucial laws and policies are debated and passed. However, in several states, assembly proceedings are increasingly being reduced to political drama rather than meaningful governance.
A similar situation unfolded in the Punjab Assembly today, where opposition parties made serious allegations against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
Opposition leaders, including members of the Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal, staged a protest inside the House, alleging that the Chief Minister attended the Assembly in an intoxicated state. They even demanded urgent intervention from the Speaker and called for alcohol tests on all MLAs as a matter of priority.
The incident created a major political uproar, with heated exchanges and disruptions during the proceedings. The opposition’s claims sparked controversy, though no official medical or alcohol test was conducted in the Assembly.
While such allegations are extremely serious, there has been no formal confirmation or independent verification of the claims made against the Chief Minister. The episode has once again highlighted the growing political tensions within the Punjab Assembly.
