While Artificial Intelligence (AI) is often highlighted as a consumer tech buzzword, most current devices still rely on manual prompts, says Nothing CEO Carl Pei. Speaking at the World Government Summit 2026, Pei outlined his vision for the future of smartphone operating systems, emphasizing personalization. “In the future, everybody will have their own personalised operating system, because we’re all different,” he said.

Nothing’s approach is not to build a single OS for billions of users, but to create a one-to-one operating system tailored to individual needs. Pei explained that people have different goals and personalities, requiring a more personalized way to interact with smartphones.

Currently, Nothing’s AI-powered tool, “Essential Apps,” still requires users to manually issue natural language prompts. The next phase, however, aims for the system to learn user patterns, automatically suggest and position tools on the phone, and eventually predict and execute tasks without user input. “We don’t have to ask anymore, because once we’re certain about what people want on their phones, it just automatically place it,” Pei added.

Pei also highlighted how AI is accelerating internal development through “vibe coding.” He shared, “I’ve been doing a lot of vibe coding since January… and I think the models improved significantly in December last year. Now it’s actually helping me in product development.” By leveraging enhanced AI models, Pei has prototyped features that had been on the company’s back burner for years, pushing Nothing’s innovation forward.

Vishal Sikka, former Infosys CEO and founder of AI startup Vianai Systems, notes that AI disruption in software is not sudden but has been evolving for years.

Speaking on X (formerly Twitter), Sikka said, “I have been in these two industries for 28+ years, and in AI since I was a student — so ‘sudden’ makes me smile.” He highlighted that the real focus should not be on the speed of adoption but on how unevenly AI is reshaping work. Referring to Melanie Mitchell’s description of AI as a “jagged frontier,” he pointed out that AI accelerates routine, well-defined tasks but struggles with contextual reasoning that requires human judgment.

Sikka also observed that AI tools are reducing the need for deep technical knowledge, as less-experienced employees can now handle many routine or technical tasks. Meanwhile, tasks requiring human insight and judgment remain unchanged. He explained, “This helps them do in real-time what they did before in slow, costly, complex ways, but go far beyond that and do things that simply couldn’t be done before. And in the process, save massively in the clean up of legacy.”

As AI continues to transform industries, Sikka emphasizes that the goal should be to integrate the technology to refine workflows rather than replace human thinking or creativity. AI should enhance problem-solving, insight, and innovation, serving as a tool to augment human potential, not supplant it.

A modest increase in New Zealand’s minimum wage is set to have broader implications beyond payroll adjustments. From April 1, 2026, the adult minimum wage will rise to $23.95 per hour, up from $23.50, while starting-out and training wages will increase to $19.16 per hour, maintaining the 80 percent link to the adult rate.

For employers relying on migrant labour, the change carries added significance. Beyond higher wage bills, it directly affects visa eligibility and compliance, particularly for roles paid at or near the minimum wage.

Any work visa application lodged on or after April 1, 2026 that includes a job offer must meet or exceed the new minimum wage. This requirement applies across visa categories, including the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). Employers with migrant workers currently earning minimum wage will need to ensure pay adjustments are made by April 1, 2026, employment agreements reflect the revised rates, and any new or pending visa applications meet the updated threshold. Applications that fall short of the required pay at the time of lodgement risk being declined, even if the role and employer otherwise meet eligibility criteria.

While the increase itself may seem small, the compliance impact can be significant. Immigration New Zealand assesses visa applications based on the pay rate in effect when the application is submitted, not when the job offer was originally made. For employers with multiple migrant workers, especially in lower-paid roles, the change may affect the timing of AEWV applications or renewals, workforce and salary budgeting, and job design where wages sit close to the minimum threshold.

Businesses planning recruitment or visa renewals around March 2026 should act proactively. Employers can mitigate risks by reviewing which migrant workers are paid at or near the minimum wage, confirming whether upcoming visa applications will fall after April 1, and updating employment agreements as needed.

This approach will help ensure compliance, avoid delays in visa processing, and smoothly manage workforce transitions following the minimum wage increase.

Qatar is expanding its long-term residency framework as part of a strategic push to attract global talent, entrepreneurs, and investors. The country will introduce a 10-year residency programme for entrepreneurs and senior executives, announced by Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, as Doha seeks to bolster business growth and accelerate economic diversification.

This initiative places Qatar alongside regional peers such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, both of which have recently introduced long-term residency options to attract skilled professionals, entrepreneurs, and investment capital.

In addition to the residency plan, Al Thani revealed that the Qatar Investment Authority will increase its venture capital programme by $2 billion, enhancing the country’s startup ecosystem. This expansion builds on Qatar’s existing “Fund of Funds” initiative, currently valued at $1 billion, which was designed to attract venture capital firms, support entrepreneurship, and reduce reliance on gas revenues.

The new 10-year residency programme complements Qatar’s existing long-term visa options, including the Golden Visa programme, officially called the Qatar Residency by Investment scheme. Launched in September 2020, this scheme allows foreign nationals to secure long-term residency through real estate investment and has become one of the Gulf’s most competitive investor visa options.

Applicants under the investment route can choose between a temporary residence permit, requiring a minimum real estate investment of $200,000 (QAR 728,000), or a permanent residence permit, requiring a minimum investment of $1 million (QAR 3.65 million) in government-approved areas for foreign ownership.

To qualify, applicants must be at least 21 years old, hold a valid passport, be in good health, maintain a clean criminal record, and provide proof of the qualifying investment. Permanent residency applicants also need to obtain a Qatari ID, pay a state fee of $824, and demonstrate proficiency in Arabic. Qatar enforces an annual quota for permanent residency, requiring applicants to wait a year if the cap is reached.

Required documentation includes proof of investment, passport copies, police clearance certificates, medical reports, fee receipts, and evidence of sufficient financial means. The application process typically takes four to six weeks, subject to government verification.

Golden Visa holders are permitted to live and work in Qatar without a local sponsor, own property in approved zones, establish businesses independently, sponsor family members, and access healthcare and education services. The visa also allows unrestricted entry and exit during its validity, providing flexibility and security for long-term residents.

Most schools will begin between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM, with classes concluding by early afternoon, typically 1:00 PM or 2:00 PM, so that daily learning does not exceed five hours. Fridays will follow an even shorter schedule, with students dismissed by 11:30 AM to allow adequate time for the weekly congregational prayer. Parents are advised to confirm the exact timetable with their child’s school, as start and end times may vary. Examination schedules will continue as planned, so students should prepare their study routines accordingly. Cafeteria services may also be limited during fasting hours, and children not observing the fast may need to carry their own meals.

Officials have emphasized that the adjustments are intended to promote student well-being, strengthen family connections, and respect the significance of Ramadan, while ensuring that educational standards are maintained. By reducing full school days, offering flexible learning arrangements, and aligning holidays with the season, the UAE aims to help students and educators navigate the month with ease. Telugu actor Eesha Rebba, last seen in Om Shanti Shanti Shantihi, has taken a strong stand against online harassment following a disturbing social media incident. The actor recently approached the Banjara Hills Police Station and filed a formal complaint, alleging that an individual running a meme or social media account posted a sexually explicit, obscene, and defamatory comment about her on a public platform.

Reacting to the incident, filmmaker Hemanth Madhukar strongly condemned the abuse and called for strict action against online harassment. “Actresses are increasingly being forced to fight against online abuse. The language being used is disturbing, derogatory, and clearly amounts to mental harassment,” he said. “Such content not only attacks a woman’s dignity but also causes severe emotional distress and public humiliation.”

Hemanth Madhukar emphasized that Eesha Rebba’s case is not an isolated incident. He pointed out that earlier, actress Anasuya Bharadwaj had filed a complaint against 42 individuals, including film producers, journalists, television channels, and social media influencers. Anasuya accused them of online abuse, criminal intimidation, defamation, and circulating morphed and AI-generated sexually explicit content. She had revealed that her images and videos were manipulated using artificial intelligence and circulated across platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and X without her consent.

“This misuse of artificial intelligence has only added to the woes of actresses and must be dealt with strictly, without any leniency,” Hemanth asserted.
