Varanasi: Rajamouli Plans ₹75 Crore Hollywood-Style Marketing

Share

Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu are teaming up for Varanasi, slated for release in April next year. However, the buzz isn’t just about the film—it’s about the Hollywood-style marketing strategy that Rajamouli is reportedly considering, which could be a significant risk.

In Hollywood, marketing has evolved into a massive engine that sometimes matches—or even exceeds—the cost of producing a film. For big-budget projects, studios routinely spend 50% to 100% of the production budget solely on promotions. This investment goes into global advertising campaigns, TV spots, digital marketing, social media trends, influencer tie-ups, outdoor publicity, and star-driven media tours across continents. The principle is simple: in a crowded entertainment space, visibility drives opening weekend numbers. Recent examples include Oppenheimer and Barbie, which dominated global pop culture conversations for weeks thanks to aggressive, innovative marketing.

This trend is now slowly influencing Indian cinema. Big-scale projects are realizing that content alone isn’t enough without strong promotion. Rumors suggest that Varanasi could be spending over ₹75 crore on worldwide promotions. If true, it signals a major shift in mindset—producers are willing to invest heavily to ensure strong reach, hype, and recall even before the film hits theaters.

However, with ₹75 crore being enough to produce multiple films, this represents a huge financial gamble. Still, Rajamouli appears committed to taking this risk, aiming to market Varanasi at a Hollywood-level scale.

Why Nagarjuna Is Keeping His 100th Film Under Complete Wraps

Share

Landmark films always come with sky-high expectations, especially when they belong to senior stars. One such much-anticipated project is Nagarjuna Akkineni’s 100th film, being directed by acclaimed Tamil filmmaker Ra Karthik. Interestingly, despite the scale and significance of the project, there has been no official announcement, first look, or even a formal muhurat event so far—leaving fans curious.

According to industry insiders, this silence is completely intentional. It is being said that there will be no updates about Nagarjuna’s 100th film until the first copy is ready. While this approach may sound surprising in today’s hype-driven era, sources reveal that Nagarjuna himself has taken this firm decision. Even though his PR team has reportedly urged him to release at least minimal updates to keep the buzz alive, the actor has chosen to say no.

The reason behind this bold move is said to be Nagarjuna’s desire to avoid unnecessary hype. As this marks his 100th film, he is aware that excessive build-up often leads to inflated expectations, which can end in audience disappointment regardless of the film’s actual content. Having seen several big-star landmark films suffer due to over-promotion, Nagarjuna appears determined not to repeat the same mistake.

Instead, the veteran actor seems focused on letting the content speak for itself. Insiders believe he is aiming to deliver a heartfelt, meaningful film—possibly in the league of Manam—that will stay close to the hearts of Telugu audiences for years to come. While the wait may test fans’ patience, Nagarjuna’s confidence-driven silence has only added to the intrigue surrounding his milestone project.

Nani Steps Back from Hi Nanna Director Shouryuv’s Next Project

Share

After striking a fine balance between mass entertainers and intense, gritty roles, Natural Star Nani surprised audiences post Dasara by headlining the emotional love story Hi Nanna. The film also marked the impressive debut of director Shouryuv, earning both critical and commercial appreciation. Soon after, there were strong rumours that Shouryuv had narrated a script to Jr NTR, but industry circles maintained that the director was keen on reuniting with Nani for his second project.

However, fresh buzz from inside sources suggests that this much-anticipated collaboration may not happen anytime soon. With a packed lineup ahead, Nani is currently busy shooting for The Paradise and is expected to move on to Sujeeth’s Bloody Romeo next. Given these long-term commitments and his plan to focus on back-to-back action-oriented projects, Nani is said to have politely advised Shouryuv not to wait for him for another two to three years and instead explore other suitable heroes for the script.

With Nani and Shouryuv unlikely to reunite for now, the big question is which actor will eventually take up the director’s next project. Interestingly, this situation highlights a growing trend in Tollywood, where several debut directors who score big hits take a long gap before announcing their second film. Shouryuv has now joined that list.

In contrast to earlier times—when filmmakers like Puri Jagannadh delivered multiple films within a couple of years—today’s cinema landscape demands more time. Rising budgets, changing audience preferences, and the pressure to live up to debut success have made delays almost inevitable. As a result, while expectations remain high for Shouryuv’s next move, it may still take time before his second film finally takes shape.

Revanth Reddy Slams BRS Over ‘Jathipitha’ Claims, Defends Phone Tapping Probe

Share

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy launched a scathing attack on the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and its chief, former CM K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), over the ongoing phone tapping investigation, accusing the party of hypocrisy and political arrogance.

Reacting strongly to BRS leaders questioning the issuance of notices to what they called the “Jathipitha” (father of Telangana), Revanth Reddy dismissed such claims as self-awarded titles with no moral standing. He remarked that it was laughable for political leaders to project themselves as larger-than-life figures while being subject to serious allegations.

“Some people conveniently label themselves as the ‘father of Telangana.’ They claim to be movement leaders, but their actions tell a completely different story,” Revanth Reddy said. Drawing a comparison with Mahatma Gandhi, the chief minister stressed that true leadership is earned through sacrifice, not self-promotion. “Gandhiji gave up power and ultimately his life. What sacrifices have those calling themselves ‘Jathipitha’ actually made?” he questioned.

Revanth Reddy further challenged the moral authority of BRS leaders by recalling how several genuine Telangana activists were treated during KCR’s regime. He cited the arrest of Telangana movement ideologue Professor Kodandaram, who was detained during the BRS government. “Wasn’t Professor Kodandaram a movement leader? Didn’t your government break doors to arrest him? Where was your respect for activists then?” he asked, adding that issuing notices and questioning leaders today is part of a democratic process.

Accusing BRS leaders of exploiting the Telangana movement for personal gain, Revanth Reddy said many true activists had sacrificed everything, while others amassed power and wealth. “People like Ravi Narayana Reddy lost everything for Telangana. But those who accumulated positions and thousands of crores—how can they call themselves movement warriors?” he remarked.

Invoking Dr B R Ambedkar, the chief minister underlined that accountability is non-negotiable in a democracy. “Ambedkar made it clear that those who take illegal paths must face investigation. Even leaders like Shibu Soren were probed. We are not divine beings,” he said.

Revanth Reddy concluded by asserting that the era of projecting personal legal troubles as an attack on the state is over. “In a democracy, anyone who commits wrongdoing must face inquiry. No one is above the Constitution,” he declared.

Dhanush–Sai Pallavi Reunion Boosts Rajkumar Periyaswamy’s Next

Share

After the blockbuster success of the patriotic drama Amaran, Tamil filmmaker Rajkumar Periyaswamy is set to collaborate with versatile actor Dhanush for yet another compelling project. The upcoming film is said to be a socially relevant drama that pays tribute to unsung heroes in contemporary society, continuing the director’s reputation for honest and emotionally rooted storytelling.

Adding to the buzz, the makers have roped in Tollywood sensation Sree Leela as one of the female leads. The excitement has now doubled with the official announcement that Sai Pallavi has also joined the cast. This development has thrilled fans, especially since Dhanush and Sai Pallavi previously set screens on fire in Maari 2, with the chartbuster “Rowdy Baby” becoming a global sensation.

With Dhanush, Sai Pallavi, and Sree Leela coming together, the film boasts a powerhouse combination of performers known for their electrifying screen presence and exceptional dancing skills. However, there’s an intriguing twist. Director Rajkumar Periyaswamy is celebrated for his grounded narratives and thought-provoking themes rather than flashy commercial elements. This has sparked curiosity about whether the film will feature high-energy dance numbers or stay true to his signature realistic tone.

Regardless of the approach, expectations are high that the director will extract powerful performances from this talented ensemble through strong, well-written characters. For now, audiences eagerly await more updates on what promises to be a meaningful and engaging cinematic experience.

Sankranthi 2027 Set for Massive Tollywood Box Office Clash

Share

Sankranthi 2026 turned out to be a highly profitable season for Tollywood, despite a couple of films failing to make an impact. While Megastar Chiranjeevi’s Mana Shankara Varaprasad Garu emerged as a massive blockbuster, movies like Anaganana Oka Raju and Nari Nari Naduma Murari performed reasonably well at the box office. On the flip side, Raja Saab ended up as a major disappointment. Nevertheless, the festive season once again proved Tollywood’s strength, with overall collections comfortably crossing the ₹700–800 crore mark during Sankranthi alone.

Buoyed by this success, Tollywood has already begun charting out plans for Sankranthi 2027, which is shaping up to be even more competitive. Reports suggest that Prabhas’ next film Fauzi, directed by Hanu Raghavapudi, is aiming for a Pongal release. At the same time, Megastar Chiranjeevi’s upcoming project with director KS Bobby is also eyeing the same festive window. Adding to the clash, Anil Ravipudi’s next film—most likely starring Venkatesh—is also expected to target Sankranthi 2027.

With more films likely to join the race, the upcoming festive season promises to be a high-voltage box-office battle. While final release dates may depend on shooting schedules and post-production timelines, the fact that top stars are once again lining up for Sankranthi clearly shows the confidence Tollywood has gained after the success of 2026. If all these biggies stick to their plans, Sankranthi 2027 could witness one of the biggest box-office showdowns in Telugu cinema history.

Chandrababu vs Jagan: Contrasting Approaches to Political Violence in Andhra Pradesh

Share

Andhra Pradesh politics is showing a stark contrast between former CM YS Jagan and current CM Chandrababu Naidu in their handling of political violence. Between 2019 and 2024, YCP supporters were involved in multiple attacks on TDP cadres, including incidents of offices being set on fire and party members being injured.

During these events, Jagan reportedly remained indifferent, suggesting that such clashes were perhaps provoked by TDP leaders, giving the impression that YCP’s actions were acceptable.

In contrast, Chandrababu Naidu has taken a firm stance following attacks on the homes of Ambati Rambabu and Jogi Ramesh. He instructed the Andhra Pradesh Police to take strict action against the culprits, regardless of party affiliation, while also urging party activists to maintain public order and refrain from violence.

Observers note that Naidu’s approach emphasizes public harmony and social justice, highlighting a clear difference from Jagan’s previous response to political unrest.

India’s Smartphone Market Hits Record Value in 2025 Driven by Premium Segment

Share

The Indian smartphone market reached a historic milestone in 2025, driven by a strong shift toward premium devices. According to Counterpoint Research, more than one in five smartphones sold in India fell into the premium segment (priced above ₹30,000), pushing the market to its highest-ever annual value.

While total shipment volumes grew modestly by 1% year-on-year, the market’s total value surged 8%, primarily due to the expansion of the premium segment, which grew 11% YoY to capture a record 22% of overall shipments. Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint Research, attributed this growth to stable economic conditions, strong domestic demand, controlled inflation, and reduced repo rates, which boosted discretionary spending. OEMs also strengthened their premium portfolios, emphasizing high-end camera capabilities, flagship experiences, and flexible financing options.

Apple and Vivo Lead the Market
Apple emerged as the revenue leader, capturing a 28% value share—its highest ever in India. The iPhone 16 played a key role, becoming the top-shipped model in 2025 and achieving the highest-ever annual shipment share for any iPhone in the country.

In terms of volume, Vivo (excluding its sub-brand iQOO) led the market with a 20% share, followed by Samsung at 16%. Samsung dominated the foldable segment with an 88% share. Prachir Singh, Senior Research Analyst at Counterpoint, highlighted Vivo’s dual strategy across mass-market and premium segments, with the Y and T series driving volume and the X series, powered by its ZEISS partnership, surging 185% YoY.

Emerging Players and Market Trends
Smaller brands made significant gains in 2025. Motorola was the fastest-growing major brand by volume with 54% growth, while Nothing’s sub-brand CMF grew 83%. Nothing overall posted 32% YoY volume growth in Q4 2025, supported by an expanding offline retail presence and investments in local production, including a flagship store planned in Bengaluru.

The foldable segment remained led by Samsung, with Motorola trailing, while technological advancements became evident across all tiers. Average smartphone DRAM increased 5% to support AI-led applications, battery capacities rose around 9% with silicon-carbon technology, and MediaTek led chipsets with a 47% share, followed by Qualcomm at 29%.

Outlook
The market may face challenges in the budget segment due to rising component costs, potentially causing a low single-digit decline in shipment volumes. However, overall market value is expected to remain strong, with average selling prices projected to rise 5–7% as Indian consumers increasingly adopt premium smartphones.

OpenAI Plans Bot-Free Social Media Platform with Biometric Verification

Share

OpenAI is reportedly planning to enter the social media space with a new platform designed to combat bot-driven spam and provide a human-only experience. According to a Forbes report, the project is in its early stages and is expected to include biometric verification features to ensure genuine users.

The rumoured platform aims to challenge established players like X, Instagram, and TikTok, where bots increasingly disrupt feeds, comments, and engagement metrics. Beyond spam, AI-generated misinformation has also become a growing concern on these platforms.

An unnamed source told Forbes that the new social network may require users to provide “proof of personhood” through biometric verification, similar to Apple’s Face ID or World ID. Critics, however, warn that centralizing biometric data with a private tech company could raise security and privacy concerns.

The verification process is reported to involve scanning a user’s eyeball to create a unique identification, ensuring all accounts on the platform are human-operated. This could distinguish OpenAI’s offering from current social networks, which largely rely on traditional account verification methods.

The move is timely, given ongoing issues with bots on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), which recently removed around 1.7 million bot accounts yet continues to face challenges. OpenAI has already shown interest in social features with its AI video app Sora and the social media–like functions introduced to ChatGPT, suggesting a broader strategy to integrate social experiences into its ecosystem.

If the rumours prove true, OpenAI’s platform could bring a novel approach to user verification and trust online. However, competing with entrenched giants like Instagram, TikTok, and X will likely be a major challenge, despite the unique human-only concept.
