Winter storms had a decisive impact on the North American box office performance of the Sankranthi releases. During their opening week, market conditions were highly favorable, with strong occupancies and positive word of mouth across major territories.

Collections remained steady in the initial days, and there was widespread confidence that the films would comfortably achieve their projected milestones. Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu, Anaganaga Oka Raju, and Nari Nari Naduma Murari all showed solid traction, entered the breakeven zone early, and soon began generating profits.

However, severe winter storms in the following weeks significantly affected theater footfalls and disrupted the films’ momentum. As a result, while all three titles emerged as clear hits, they fell short of their ambitious dream targets.

Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu concluded its North American run at $3.3 million, narrowly missing the $3.5 million mark. Anaganaga Oka Raju wrapped up with $1.73 million against a projected $2 million, while Nari Nari Naduma Murari finished at $740,000, falling short of the $1 million milestone.

The adverse weather conditions ultimately capped what were otherwise highly successful theatrical runs. Under normal circumstances, all three films could have comfortably reached higher revenue brackets in the North American market.

Overall, the Sankranthi season delivered a major boost and much-needed relief to the Telugu box office, both in India and overseas, particularly in North America.

Ace director Lokesh Kanagaraj has finally broken his silence on the criticism he faced for opting out of directing the much-anticipated film that was to feature Tamil cinema legends Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan together.

Addressing the media on Monday, Lokesh clarified the circumstances behind his decision. “I want to clear a few things regarding the Rajinikanth–Kamal Haasan project. I met both of them around the time Coolie was released. They expressed their desire to work together, and for me, it was a huge honour that two legends, coming together after 46 years, wanted me to direct their film,” he said.

Lokesh explained that he was already committed to Kaithi 2 at the time but felt the opportunity was too special to ignore. “I informed the Kaithi 2 production team that I wanted to complete this project first, as I didn’t know if I would ever get such an opportunity again,” he added.

The director revealed that he spent nearly one and a half months sincerely developing the script. “I wrote the story keeping both legends in mind and gave it my absolute best. After completing the script, I narrated it to Rajinikanth sir and Kamal sir individually. Both of them were equally excited about the story,” Lokesh said.

However, further discussions led to a rethink. Lokesh pointed out that both stars have been part of back-to-back action films in recent years. “Rajinikanth sir has been doing action-oriented films right up to Jailer 2. Kamal sir’s upcoming film, directed by stunt choreographers Anbariv, is also action-heavy. Both of them felt that doing yet another action film without a break might not be ideal,” he explained.

As a result, the team mutually decided to step back from the project for the time being.

Lokesh also expressed gratitude for the support received by his recent release Coolie. “Despite facing criticism, Coolie ran successfully for 35 days. Sun Pictures have informed me that the film was profitable. I sincerely thank the media and the audience for their support,” he said, adding that the experience taught him valuable lessons. “I will make sure to apply what I’ve learned in my future projects,” he concluded.

An Indian-origin doctor based in the United States has alleged that her elderly mother, an American citizen, was stopped and questioned by masked immigration officers at an outlet mall in Texas, in what she claims was an incident driven by racial profiling rather than legal status.

San Francisco-based physician Nisha Patel shared the account on X, stating that officers from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) approached her mother while she was shopping. According to Patel, the agents assumed her mother spoke Spanish because of her accent and began questioning her in Spanish.

“When she said she doesn’t speak Spanish, they began demanding where she was ‘from,’ rapidly listing countries without even giving her a chance to respond,” Patel wrote.

Patel said her mother calmly explained that she had lived in the United States for decades and was a US citizen. However, she was only allowed to leave after showing a photograph of her US passport on her phone.

“My mom told them she’s been in this country longer than some of them have been alive,” Patel said, adding that her mother has lived in the US for 47 years.

The post comes amid heightened scrutiny of ICE enforcement practices, with multiple reports of American citizens being stopped or questioned during immigration operations. Patel rejected claims that such actions are limited to targeting undocumented criminals.

“She is a US citizen. If you think this is just about ‘sending criminals back,’ you are dead wrong,” she wrote.

In recent weeks, ICE operations have triggered protests across several US cities. Demonstrations have followed the fatal shooting of Minneapolis resident Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents earlier this week, as well as the killing of Renee Good earlier this month. Protests have been reported in Minneapolis, New York City, San Francisco, Boston and other locations.

Indians Among Largest Groups in ICE Detention

Indian nationals continue to be among the largest groups detained by ICE. During the 2024 fiscal year, 2,647 Indians were held for immigration violations such as visa overstays or illegal entry, making them the fourth-largest nationality in ICE custody. By late 2025, more than 3,258 additional Indian nationals had been detained.

US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance have defended federal immigration actions, stating that ICE deployments are necessary to curb what they describe as widespread crime and fraud in several states.

Hotshot Kollywood director Lokesh Kanagaraj has been making frequent headlines lately, especially following the announcement of his highly anticipated next project with pan-India star Allu Arjun, which has created a wave of excitement among fans.

Meanwhile, the long-standing uncertainty surrounding the Kaithi sequel has sparked several unfounded speculations, largely due to Lokesh’s prolonged silence. With the announcement of the Allu Arjun project, rumors quickly spread that Lokesh had abandoned Kaithi 2 in favor of higher remuneration.

Breaking his silence, the Coolie director has now clarified his upcoming commitments. Lokesh firmly denied the rumors about shelving Kaithi 2 for financial reasons, stating that the sequel will go on floors once he completes Allu Arjun’s film, which is his immediate next project. He also confirmed that his ambitious LCU lineup—including Kaithi 2, Vikram 2, and Rolex—remains very much on track and will be completed as planned.

Addressing the much-discussed Rajinikanth–Kamal Haasan project, which was initially supposed to be helmed by him, Lokesh revealed that he had worked on an action-packed script for the duo after Coolie. “I worked sincerely on the script for one and a half months, and both of them liked it very much. However, since they had already done numerous action films in their careers, they were expecting a light-hearted film. As I don’t know how to make a light-hearted film, I honestly conveyed this to them and stepped away from the project,” he explained.

Lokesh further stated that the delay in Kaithi 2 was due to Karthi signing other commitments and his prior promise to work with Mythri Movie Makers for Allu Arjun’s project. He expressed confidence in starting his LCU movies soon after completing the Allu Arjun film.

Even before the release of Coolie, Lokesh was confident about its success, though it fell short of high expectations. Nonetheless, if he proceeds with Kaithi 2 after completing the Allu Arjun project, the sequel is expected to generate significant hype and excitement among fans.

Rocking Star Manchu Manoj is making a powerful comeback with a careful selection of intense roles. After much deliberation, he chose the character David Reddy, which promises to showcase his commanding screen presence. From the earlier War Dog introduction video to the recently unveiled first look, Manoj exudes fierceness and authority, raising audience expectations.

The first look poster of this pan-India historical action film was released on Republic Day, featuring Manoj in a striking warrior avatar. The poster highlights his impressive physical transformation, sharp expression, and strong posture, hinting at a performance driven by intensity and depth.

The film is produced by Nallagangula Venkat Reddy and Bharat Motukuri, and directed by Hanuma Reddy Yakkanti under reputed banners. After crossing the massive ₹300 crore gross mark within its first week, Mana Shankara Varaprasad Garu saw a slight slowdown during weekdays. However, the Republic Day long weekend gave the film a fresh boost, putting it back into strong box office form.

Ticket sales surged over the second weekend, with over one lakh tickets sold on BookMyShow on Saturday and more than 1.2 lakh on Sunday. With Republic Day being a national holiday, bookings continued to rise. The film has now touched around ₹350 crore worldwide, and the makers celebrated the milestone with a grand event in Hyderabad. Except for Nayanthara, the entire team attended, marking the occasion in a festive mood.

As the film completes two weeks in theatres, the coming days are crucial. Reaching the ₹400 crore mark is achievable, though it may take some time. With no major releases posing serious competition and only a small film arriving on Friday, the upcoming weekend looks favourable. If the film sustains its momentum, another strong weekend could push it closer to the next milestone, keeping fans eagerly engaged.
