The Raja Saab : Prabhas’s New Avatar, But Uneven Execution Holds It Back

Share

Story:
The Raja Saab follows Raja Saab (Prabhas), who lives with his grandmother Gangamma (Zarina Wahab), struggling with early-stage Alzheimer’s and yearning to reunite with her missing husband (Sanjay Dutt). Bhairavi (Malavika Mohanan) enters Raja Saab’s life, and together with friends, they journey to a palace in the Narsapur forest in search of his grandfather. They soon discover that he has been dead for years and now exists as a ghost. The central mystery revolves around his grandfather’s past and the truth behind his death.

Performances:
Prabhas brings a refreshing charm to a light-hearted role, a departure from his typical mass and action-oriented characters. His hospital sequence in the second half is particularly noteworthy, though inconsistencies in his makeup and look are visible.

Malavika Mohanan and Nidhhi Agerwal primarily add glamour, with Malavika getting slightly more screen time. Riddhi Kumar’s role is limited. Zarina Wahab delivers a heartfelt performance as the grandmother, providing the emotional anchor of the film. Sanjay Dutt appears mostly as a VFX-heavy ghost, adequate for the role of the evil spirit, while Boman Irani is fine in his brief appearance. Unfortunately, the comedy involving Satya, Prabhas Seenu, and VTV Ganesh falls flat and lacks contemporary appeal.

Technical Aspects:
Shot over three years on lavish sets with extensive visual effects, the film boasts visually appealing cinematography, though VFX quality is inconsistent. Some graphics are well-executed, while others—like the recurring cat visuals—look tacky. The production design occasionally feels overwhelming.

Thaman’s music adds energy, with three visually striking songs and the remix track “Nach Nach” enhancing the glamour. However, the editing, especially in the first half, struggles to maintain rhythm.

Highlights:

  • Prabhas’s refreshing new avatar
  • Hospital sequence and select second-half scenes
  • Song picturization

Drawbacks:

  • Formulaic sequences with the heroines
  • Inconsistent VFX
  • Weak and unconvincing climax
  • Uneven narrative

Analysis:
While horror dramas have historically been tricky territory for top stars, Prabhas deserves credit for attempting a romantic-horror-comedy blend, a genre relatively unexplored in his career. Director Maruthi also experiments with a different premise.

However, the film falters in narration. The first half follows a repetitive template of introducing one heroine after another, each with limited screen time and song sequences, delaying the actual story. Only near the interval does the narrative shift to the haunted palace, where the ghostly mystery begins.

The comedy and romantic tracks feel outdated and poorly conceived, often breaking logic—characters trapped in the palace suddenly move around freely, and the Nidhhi Agerwal–Saptagiri track is particularly cringeworthy. A short stretch when Boman Irani explains the escape plan is engaging, standing out as the strongest part of the second half. But the climax and final confrontation with Sanjay Dutt fail to deliver impact.

Conclusion:
The Raja Saab is an ambitious attempt by Prabhas to step beyond his usual action repertoire. Despite a promising premise and moments of engagement, the film is weighed down by a disjointed narrative, tacky visual effects, outdated romantic tracks, and lackluster comedy. While Prabhas’s performance and select sequences shine, the overall experience falls short of expectations.

Bottom Line:
A film with potential, but inconsistent execution prevents it from becoming a truly memorable entertainer.

Over the years, Pawan Kalyan has consistently worked to reciprocate the love and support of the Pithapuram people, and this Sankranti festival, he is taking his commitment to a whole new level.

Amaravati Avakai Film Festival Launched in Vijayawada

After the NDA coalition led by Chief Minister N. assumed power in Andhra Pradesh in 2024, the state government has been making concerted efforts to boost tourism across the region. As part of this initiative, several cultural and heritage-focused activities are being regularly organised by the Tourism Department, headed by Minister Kandula Durgesh, to showcase the state’s rich traditions and artistic legacy.

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Andhra Pradesh government has launched the three-day Amaravati Avakai Film Festival, which began today in Vijayawada. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu attended the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest and formally flagged off the event this evening. He stated that the festival aims to celebrate the legacy of Telugu cinema while recognising its contributions and achievements on both national and global platforms.

Describing Tollywood as the face of Indian cinema, Naidu remarked that the Telugu film industry has earned immense respect for Telugu people worldwide. He highlighted how Telugu cinema has consistently pushed creative boundaries, producing experimental and path-breaking films ranging from Bhakta Prahlada to Baahubali, earning numerous accolades despite stiff competition from other film industries.

The Chief Minister also criticised the previous government for neglecting cultural and recreational activities. He noted that the current NDA administration has successfully revived and promoted the state’s cultural identity through major events such as Vijayawada Utsav and Kanaka Durga Utsav, which received widespread public participation and appreciation.

The Amaravati Avakai Film Festival is being jointly organised by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department and Teamwork Arts. The festival is taking place along the scenic banks of the Krishna River, at Punnami Ghat and Bhavani Island, from Thursday to Saturday.

Over the course of three days, visitors can enjoy a diverse range of activities including film screenings, animated literary discussions, poetry readings, music and dance performances, theatre productions, workshops, cultural lectures, and contemporary art exhibitions. Several other cultural programmes have also been curated as part of this vibrant celebration, making the festival a comprehensive showcase of cinema and culture.

Hombale Films’ Kantara & Mahavatar Narsimha Enter Oscars 2026 Race

Share

Hombale Films has firmly established itself as one of the most powerful production houses in South Indian cinema today. The banner has already backed one of the finest films in Indian cinema, and now it is aiming even higher on the global stage.

In a significant announcement, Hombale Films confirmed the entry of #KantaraChapter1 into the Best Picture contention for the Academy Awards 2026. What makes this even more interesting is that another prestigious project distributed by the banner is also part of the Oscars race.

Hombale has officially submitted Mahavatar Narsimha for consideration in the Best Picture category at the Oscars 2026. With two major films competing simultaneously, the production house is poised to gain remarkable international recognition. However, industry analysts believe that Mahavatar Narsimha may have a slight edge over Kantara Chapter 1, primarily because it is an animated feature.

With animated films increasingly gaining prominence and acceptance at the Academy Awards, there is a strong possibility that the jury may favour Narsimha over more traditional commercial films. While Kantara Chapter 1 is deeply rooted in regional culture and folklore, it still carries a strong universal appeal that could connect with global audiences.

Meanwhile, the Hindi film Homebound has also made headlines by securing a spot in the Top 15 of the Official Entry category in the Oscars race. Known for its emotionally rich narrative, the film explores themes of identity, family relationships, and the longing to return to one’s roots—elements that are expected to resonate strongly with the international jury.

With multiple Indian films making waves at the global level, the road to the Oscars 2026 is shaping up to be an exciting one for Indian cinema.

Jana Nayagan Censor Row: Madras HC Clears Vijay’s Final Film

Share

Thalapathy Vijay’s final film, Jana Nayagan, which was scheduled for release this Friday, has faced an unexpected postponement following a censor-related issue. The delay came after the Madras High Court reserved its verdict until today morning, prompting the makers to move the court over the non-issuance of the censor certificate.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the Madras High Court ruled in favour of the film’s makers. The court directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a U/A certificate to Jana Nayagan with immediate effect.

In its observations, the court stated that entertaining anonymous complaints would set a dangerous precedent. It further noted that the CBFC chairperson’s letter uploaded on January 6 lacked jurisdiction. The court clarified that once the modifications suggested by the examining committee are implemented, the certification process should automatically conclude.

Consequently, the High Court set aside the CBFC chairperson’s decision to refer the film to the review committee—a move identified as the primary reason behind the delay in certification, which ultimately forced the makers to postpone the release.

Soon after the judgment, Additional Solicitor General Sundaresan made an urgent mention before the Chief Justice’s bench, seeking permission to file an appeal. However, the court questioned the urgency of such a request and stated that it would consider the matter only after the appeal is formally filed.

For now, while the judgment favours Jana Nayagan, the situation remains fluid. Final clarity on the film’s release prospects will emerge only after further proceedings, depending on the Chief Justice’s decision regarding the proposed appeal.

Maa Inti Bangaram Teaser: Samantha in Her Most Intense Avatar Yet

Share

The teaser of Maa Inti Bangaram is out, and it powerfully positions Samantha Ruth Prabhu in one of the most intense and transformative roles of her career.

Raw, gritty, and emotionally charged, the first glimpse promises a hard-hitting family action drama that pushes Samantha into completely unexplored territory. The teaser has instantly grabbed attention for its grounded realism and visceral impact, setting the tone for a dark and compelling narrative.

Created by Raj Nidimoru and directed by Nandini Reddy, the film marks a striking tonal departure from their earlier collaboration Oh! Baby. This time, the makers replace warmth and humour with themes of survival, rage, and resilience, delivering a far more brutal and intense cinematic experience.

Samantha essays the role of a married homemaker who is pushed into violent self-defence by circumstances beyond her control. Her transformation is portrayed as deeply layered and emotionally driven, highlighting strength born out of necessity rather than choice.

Maa Inti Bangaram is produced under the banner of Tralala Moving Pictures, with Samantha also donning the producer’s hat alongside Raj Nidimoru and Himank Duvvuru.

The film features an ensemble cast including Diganth, Gulshan Devaiah, Gautami, and Manjusha. The technical crew further strengthens the project, with Om Prakash handling cinematography, Santosh Narayanan composing the music, and Vasanth Maringanti and Raj Nidimoru penning the screenplay and dialogues.

Toxic vs Dhurandhar 2: Yash’s Film Set for a March Box Office Clash

Share

Bollywood is gearing up for one of its biggest releases this March with Dhurandhar 2, the sequel to the blockbuster Dhurandhar. Trade circles believe the film has the potential to rewrite several box-office records across the Hindi belt.

However, Dhurandhar 2 may not enjoy a free run, as South Indian cinema is ready to offer stiff competition in the form of Toxic, starring KGF sensation Yash in the lead.

Toxic was initially projected as a major pan-Indian outing, given Yash’s massive popularity after the KGF franchise. Yet, anticipation around the film fluctuated due to the relatively underwhelming promotional material released so far. That narrative appears to be shifting with the arrival of the teaser, which finally introduces Yash’s intense and intriguing character.

While the teaser has drawn mixed reactions—especially for its bold and controversial elements—it has undeniably generated strong buzz. More importantly, the teaser seems tailored to appeal to Hindi mass audiences, who traditionally respond well to gritty, raw, and abrasive content. This could work strongly in Toxic’s favor, particularly in mass pockets across the North Indian market.

As things stand, Toxic’s box-office prospects will largely hinge on its bold presentation and the massive goodwill Yash commands following KGF. If these factors align effectively, Toxic could emerge as a formidable South Indian challenger to Dhurandhar 2 at the Hindi box office this March.
