Avatar: Fire and Ash Tops Box Office, Opens Below Projections
![]()
James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash has claimed the top spot at the North American box office in its opening weekend, though its debut figures landed at the lower end of industry expectations.
According to Walt Disney Co., the third instalment in the blockbuster Avatar franchise earned $88 million from ticket sales across the United States and Canada. While the numbers were sufficient to secure the No. 1 position, they fell short of the $100–$120 million range projected by Boxoffice Pro. Disney had earlier pegged the film’s domestic opening at up to $90 million.
The film fared significantly better overseas, raking in an impressive $257 million from international markets, as per Disney’s statement released on Sunday. Globally, Fire and Ash enjoyed a robust start, reinforcing the franchise’s strong appeal beyond North America.
Domestically, the opening weekend surpassed the original Avatar, which debuted with $77 million in 2009, but remained well below Avatar: The Way of Water, which opened to a massive $134.1 million in 2022.
Historically, the Avatar films have demonstrated remarkable staying power at the box office, benefiting from December releases, immersive 3D visuals, and strong holiday-season footfalls. Both previous films went on to cross the $2 billion mark worldwide and remain among the highest-grossing movies of all time.
Despite the softer-than-expected opening, industry analysts note that Fire and Ash carries significant production and marketing costs, with profits likely to materialize over a longer theatrical run and into the next year.
Directed by James Cameron, the film sees Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana reprise their roles as Jake Sully and Neytiri. The story introduces a new antagonist—the Ash People, a violent Na’vi tribe inhabiting the mineral-rich regions of Pandora—once again placing humans and natives on a collision course.
Disney acquired the Avatar franchise as part of its $71.3 billion acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. The company already operates an Avatar-themed land at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida and is planning a similar attraction in California.
Despite Fire and Ash opening below projections, Disney’s film division has enjoyed a strong year overall. Lilo & Stitch and Zootopia 2 have both crossed the $1 billion mark globally, with Zootopia 2 achieving the milestone faster than any animated film in Hollywood history.
KCR to Lead Statewide Stir Over Irrigation Projects

After a prolonged hiatus, former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is set to return to active politics by leading a statewide movement aimed at protecting Telangana’s interests and exposing both the Central and state governments over irrigation-related issues.
The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) chief announced the launch of a massive public agitation against the prolonged delay in the Palamuru–Ranga Reddy Lift Irrigation Project across the Krishna River. He made the announcement on Sunday while addressing a press conference after chairing a joint meeting of the party’s executive, BRS Legislature Party, and BRS Parliamentary Party at Telangana Bhavan.
Popularly known as KCR, the former Chief Minister vowed to take on both the Congress-led state government and the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. “We have given enough time. Now I have decided to personally step in. There will be no niceties. We will fight relentlessly to safeguard Telangana’s interests,” KCR declared, marking his most assertive public statement since losing power to the Congress two years ago.
KCR revealed that the BRS would launch an extensive mass movement covering every village across Palamuru (Mahabubnagar), Ranga Reddy, and Nalgonda districts, culminating in a major public meeting to mobilize people on the issue.
He strongly alleged that the inefficiency of the Congress government has put Telangana’s rightful share of Krishna and Godavari river waters at serious risk, and asserted that the BRS would not remain silent while the state’s interests are compromised.
Akhanda 2 Gets Lifeline with Sunday Bounce

Akhanda 2 seemed to be losing momentum after receiving mixed word-of-mouth. While the opening weekend collections were respectable, weekday earnings dipped sharply, raising doubts over the film’s profitability. The release of Avatar 3 further intensified the pressure, pushing Akhanda 2 out of the spotlight.
However, the tide turned unexpectedly. Avatar 3 failed to make a strong impact among Indian audiences, and with no fresh releases hitting theatres this weekend, moviegoers were left with limited options. This scenario worked in favour of Akhanda 2.
Sunday witnessed a noticeable jump in bookings, as audiences who had earlier postponed watching the film decided to give it a chance. The result was improved footfalls across several centres, offering the film much-needed relief.
While the recovery may be short-lived, that single strong Sunday has given Akhanda 2 some breathing room, keeping it in the race—at least for now.

Avatar: Fire and Ash Opens Below Expectations, Trails Zootopia 2
![]()
Despite enormous expectations driven by the franchise’s legacy, Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third chapter in James Cameron’s ambitious Avatar saga, has delivered a surprisingly subdued opening at the global box office. Trade analysts and audiences alike anticipated a record-breaking debut, but the film has fallen short of emerging as the biggest opener of 2025.
On its first day, Avatar: Fire and Ash collected an estimated $137 million worldwide, a solid figure by industry standards but insufficient to surpass this year’s top debut. In an ironic twist, the film failed to outpace the opening-day numbers of the animated blockbuster Zootopia 2, which registered a massive $150 million global opening following its release on November 26.
The primary reason behind this underwhelming performance lies in North America, where Fire and Ash posted a modest $36 million on its opening day, including relatively muted preview showings. This softer domestic start significantly impacted the film’s global tally. Overseas markets, however, painted a more encouraging picture, contributing nearly $100 million, indicating sustained international interest in the franchise.
What has further surprised industry observers is that Fire and Ash failed to achieve even half of the opening-day collections of Avatar: The Way of Water, which debuted with a staggering $441 million worldwide in 2022. Given that the first two Avatar films each crossed the $2 billion mark in their lifetime runs, expectations were naturally set extraordinarily high for the third installment.
Going forward, the film’s box office trajectory will hinge heavily on audience word of mouth and its performance during weekdays and the crucial Christmas holiday period. While the opening may not have matched projections, a strong hold and sustained momentum could still push Avatar: Fire and Ash toward the $1.5 billion milestone—though achieving parity with its predecessors will require a significant turnaround.

Varanasi Budget Buzz: Priyanka Laughs Off ₹1,300 Cr Talk
SS Rajamouli has mastered the art of generating massive buzz around his films without revealing much—whether it’s the budget or even crucial cast details. Naturally, speculation has been running high around Varanasi, his much-anticipated project starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra.
Until a few months ago, reports suggested the film was being mounted on a ₹600 crore budget. Soon, the numbers climbed to ₹800 crore, with some Mumbai media outlets further inflating the figure by another ₹200 crore. Adding fuel to the ongoing chatter, popular comedian and television host Kapil Sharma casually mentioned that the film’s budget stood at a staggering ₹1,300 crore.
When Kapil directly questioned Priyanka Chopra about the reported budget, the actress handled it with grace and wit. She smiled and deftly sidestepped the question, choosing neither to confirm nor deny the figures. As Kapil jokingly suggested that Rajamouli increased the budget after her inclusion, Priyanka laughed it off, quipping that she was pocketing the entire amount herself.
Her light-hearted response made one thing clear—the ever-growing budget figures have less to do with facts and more to do with amplifying the hype surrounding the film.
