Saudi princess freed after nearly three years in jail
Saudi authorities have released a princess detained in the kingdom under mysterious circumstances for nearly three years, her supporters said on Sunday.
The princess, Basmah bint Saud, a daughter of Saudi Arabia’s second king, disappeared in March 2019 and landed in a notorious Saudi prison without charge, she wrote on social media at the time.
The reason for her arrest along with her daughter was not clear, as she never wielded significant influence. But it marked the latest case against a royal family member as the headstrong Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman consolidated power as the kingdom’s de factor leader.
Following his father King Salman’s ascension to the throne in 2015, he has prosecuted critics, activists and rival royals, and has locked up and shaken down princes in an anti-corruption purge.
The 58-year-old Princess Basmah and her 30-year-old daughter Suhoud al-Sharif left al-Ha’ir Prison on the outskirts of the Saudi capital, Riyadh, last week and returned home to the port city of Jiddah Thursday, said her legal advisor Henri Estramant. Princess Basmah suffers from health problems including osteoporosis and is now focused on recovering and spending time with family, he added.
Saudi Arabia’s Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Saudi government has not commented publicly on the case. But in 2020, the Saudi Mission to the United Nations in Geneva told the working group on arbitrary detentions that Princess Basmah stood “accused of criminal offenses involving attempting to travel outside the Kingdom illegally.” There was no trial, it added.
Estramant said security agents scooped up the princess and her daughter as they were preparing to travel to Switzerland for regular medical care.
Princess Basmah’s health deteriorated significantly during detention, said her London-based advocates at Grant Liberty, which petitioned the U.N. and campaigned for months to secure her release.
“For months we didn’t even know if she was actually alive or not,” said Grant Liberty’s legal officer Rhianna Dorrian, citing the princess’ inability to make direct contact with her family or supporters since last May. “We also know she was denied basic medication.”
Princess Basmah’s advocates hailed her release as a victory while also saying that she remains under surveillance and some details were still unclear.
“It’s a good sign from the royal court that they’re working on improving legal conditions,” said Estramant. “Saudi Arabia is trying to modernize and develop and it’s important not to have people in arbitrary detention.”

Allu Arjun has now become the first Telugu hero to have back to back non-Baahubali record-breaking films in Australia.
Previously, Allu Arjun’s Ala Vaikunthapurramulo had collected $498K in Australia. Now, Allu Arjun’s recent theatrical outing Pushpa: The Rise has surpassed the tally comfortably.
Pushpa: The Rise has grossed over $570K in the Australian market, thus setting a non-Baahubali record.
But the catch here is that Ala Vaikunthapurramulo could gross $498K in just a single language. As for Pushpa, the film released in multiple languages and the overall tally is $570K.
Now, both the films with non-Baahubali collections tally in Australia belong to Allu Arjun – Ala Vaiknthapurramulo and Pushpa: The Rise.
Telangana Ministers take Chouhan to task for remarks on CM KCR
HYDERABAD: Several Ministers blasted Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivaraj Singh Chouhan for his comments against Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and the TRS government. “Chouhan who became Chief Minister through the backdoor method cannot criticise Chandrasekhar Rao, who was elected by the people,” Ministers said on Saturday.
Chouhan, who was in the city on Friday, termed the TRS government as “corrupt” and CM KCR as “a coward”. Reacting to this, Finance Minister T Harish Rao said in Siddipet that Chouhan was making baseless allegations. “A cat that has eaten 100 rats cannot claim to be a vegetarian. Chouhan became Chief Minister through the backdoor by purchasing MLAs. Chouhan has no right to criticise KCR,” Harish said.
The Minister alleged that there wasn’t any great progress in Madhya Pradesh in the last four years under Chouhan’s leadership. The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister who commented on our Kaleshwaram Project should recollect the Vyapam scam that took place in 2013, when Chouhan was Chief Minister, Harish said.
The Central government had already clarified in Lok Sabha that there was no corruption in the construction of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme. The BJP was demanding that GO 317 on the zonal system be scrapped. Does the saffron party wanted to repeal Presidential Orders too since GO 317 is based on them, Harish wondered.

RRR says he’s ready to resign!
Only until yesterday did rebel YSRCP MP from Narasapuram, Raghu Ramakrishna Raju, show no hints of leaving his party, despite constantly criticising it. Yet, he said today that he’s willing to resign as a member of the Lok Sabha and contest a by-election if the YSRCP fails to get him disqualified from the Lok Sabha.
The YSRCP has been trying to get RRR disqualified from the Lok Sabha for a long time now, ever since the MP has been made controversial and negative statements against YSRCP and Chief Minister Jagan. However, the YSRCP hasn’t been successful in its attempt, with RRR continuing as the MP of Narasapuram.
RRR said that through his by-election, he wants to show the YSRCP the people’s true intentions towards the government. He said that he intends on contesting in the by-elections with Amaravati as the main issue, which would very easily prove to the government the kind of opinion the people of the state have towards the YSRCP and its decisions. It is now to be seen if RRR would in fact resign from his post, or this debate would go on until his term is over.
Samantha: I took their support to recover from heart break
Samantha herself revealed that she underwent a whole lot of trauma after separating from Naga Chaitanya. Now, Samantha has opened up about the journey that preceded the divorce.
“I was under a lot of mental pressure and trauma after taking a huge decision pertaining to my life. It wasn’t easy to get over it. I took help from my friends, family, and doctors to recover from the same.” Samantha said.

Covid: What is happening with Tollywood stars?
The Covid third wave is here and the caseload is increasing at a rapid pace. India is reporting in excess of 1 lakh 50 thousand cases per day now and this is the highest tally of cases reported by India since June 2021.
Now, coming to the topic, something strange is happening in Tollywood. Several bigwigs, one after another are testing positive for Covid.
Not so long ago, Mahesh Babu announced that he tested positive for Covid and he is currently recovering from the same. Even Manchi Lakshi had contracted the virus. Now, another veteran actor Rajendra Prasad has confirmed that he has tested positive for Covid.
There is also a report claiming that a few members of F3 crew have contracted the virus. The unit is yet to comment about the same.
With one Tollywood star after another confirming that he/she have tested positive for Covid, we can understand how dire the situation is.
It is time for Tollywood stars to be more vigilant about the Covif outbreak.
