Google Pixel Fold tipped to launch this year

Share

Washington: American tech giant Google’s foldable smartphone may come out soon.

As per GSM Arena, it has been long rumoured that Google is eyeing to enter the foldable space with its own Pixel foldable phone.

A fresh new leak from Senior Director at Display Supply Chain Consultants – David Naranjo reveals a supposed launch date in Q4 2021 for the Google Pixel Fold and suggests the device will use an LTPO OLED display.

Google is expected to launch its Pixel 6 series on October 19 and has already provided an early look at the duo’s designs and specs but the Pixel Fold was not mentioned to this point.

Q4 takes place between October 1 and December 31 so there is a chance the Pixel Fold could very well be a “one more thing” announcement at the Pixel 6 event or it could launch later this year.

Earlier this year we saw a leaked list of unreleased Pixel phones containing the GPQ72 model number and “Passport” code name which is allegedly the Pixel foldable phone.

There’s little to no information on what the Pixel Fold will look like, though a past patent application from Google showed us the Android maker is looking to bring an under-screen camera and it’s rumoured to debut on its foldable.

There’s also been talk of a 7.6-inch inward folding device that would make use of Samsung’s foldable display tech.

Xi asks SCO countries to encourage Afghanistan to have inclusive political framework, shun terrorism

Share

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday said that the SCO countries should step-up coordination and encourage Afghanistan to put in place an inclusive political framework wedded to moderate policies and resolutely fight all forms of terrorism after the Taliban takeover of Kabul.

Addressing the 21st summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) at Dushanbe via video link, Xi said: “Afghanistan has undergone drastic changes”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the summit via video link and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar attended the meeting of the eight-member bloc comprising China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan.

Xi, in his address without naming the Taliban, said: “the withdrawal of foreign troops has opened a new page in its history. But Afghanistan still faces many daunting challenges, and it needs the support and assistance of the international community, particularly countries in our region.”

“We, the SCO member states, need to step up coordination, make full use of platforms such as the SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group and facilitate a smooth transition in Afghanistan.”

“We need to encourage Afghanistan to put in place a broad-based and inclusive political framework, adopt prudent and moderate domestic and foreign policies, resolutely fight all forms of terrorism, live in amity with its neighbours and truly embark on a path of peace, stability and development,” he said.

China, which has maintained contacts with the Taliban before and after it took over power in Kabul in mid-August, has announced a USD 31 million aid for food and vaccines for Afghanistan.

Though it has not yet formally announced its recognition to the interim government of the Taliban, China along with Pakistan and Russia has kept its embassy open in Kabul.

Its envoy formally met the officials of the interim government.

Xi also said that the SCO countries “need to follow the journey of upholding our common security”.

“Faced with complex and fluid security dynamics in the region, we need to pursue common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, and take tough actions against terrorism, separatism and extremism,” he said.

He particularly named the Uygur militant organisation, the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), which is fighting for the independence of the volatile Xinjiang province where the US and the EU countries accuse China of committing human rights violations against the native Uygur Muslims.

China has asked the Taliban not to permit the ETIM in Afghanistan to stage attacks on Xinjiang which shares borders with the war-ravaged country.

Xi, in his speech, said that the SCO countries need to strengthen cooperation on counter-narcotics, border control and security for major events, and speedily improve the SCO’s security cooperation mechanism.

“We need to further implement the Convention on Countering Extremism and other legal instruments, and enhance the capacity of competent authorities of SCO countries to maintain stability and respond to emergencies,” he said.

He also called on the SCO countries to promote openness and integration.

“We need to follow the journey of enhancing solidarity and cooperation,” the Chinese President said, adding that the SCO countries should “step up policy dialogue, communication and coordination, respect each other’s legitimate concerns and promptly resolve problems that may arise and affect our cooperation, thus keeping the SCO on a steady course of development”.

Xi, also General Secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), also called for the defence of political systems followed by the member states.

The SCO countries should maintain firm confidence in their systems, “reject condescending lecturing, and firmly support countries in exploring development paths and governance models that are compatible with their national conditions, he said, amidst constant pressure from the West on the CPC to relax its monopoly on political power since the country’s founding in 1949.”

“We should support each other in steadily advancing important political agenda including domestic elections. We must never allow any external interference in the domestic affairs of countries in our region under whatever pretext. In short, we should keep the future of our countries’ development and progress firmly in our own hands,” Xi said.

To facilitate the post-COVID economic recovery in SCO countries, China will continue to share its market opportunities, strive to reach USD 2.3 trillion in its cumulative trade with other SCO countries in the next five years, and improve its trade structure and balance, he said.

“China will open a China-SCO Business and Trade Institute to promote business and trade cooperation among SCO countries.”

“As phase one, the 30 billion yuan’s equivalent special lending facility set up by China in 2018 within the SCO framework will soon be completed. China will launch the second phase of this special lending facility to promote Belt and Road cooperation,” the Chinese President said, adding that such lending will mainly cover projects related to modernisation, connectivity, infrastructure and green, low-carbon and sustainable development.

Xi said China was the first to call for fighting terrorism, separatism and extremism.

“We have taken tough actions to curb the spread of drug trafficking, cybercrime and transnational organised crime, and jointly held counter-terrorism exercises and border control operations.”

“We call for seeking political settlement of international and regional hotspot issues, and we have erected a strong defense to uphold peace and tranquility in our region,” he said.

On the COVID-19 pandemic, he said that fighting the coronavirus remains the most pressing task facing all the SCO countries as he firmly opposed any act of politicising its origin tracing.

“We should follow the principle of putting people and their lives first and promote the spirit of science.”

“We need to deepen international cooperation against the virus, promote fair and equitable distribution of vaccines and firmly oppose any act of politicising COVID-19 origins tracing,” Xi asserted.

China is still facing pressure from the US and some western countries to be transparent regarding the outbreak of the pandemic in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019.

To protect the lives and health of people from around the world, China has provided close to 1.2 billion doses of finished and bulk vaccines to over 100 countries and international organisations, thus becoming the biggest vaccine provider in the world, he said.

“China will step up efforts to provide a total of two billion doses to other countries in the course of this year”, Xi added.

Concluding his address, the Chinese Presidents said that procedures will be launched to admit Iran as a member state of the SCO, and Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Qatar as new dialogue partners.

“I am confident that the growing SCO family will stride ahead together with all the progressive forces of the world, and be the builders of world peace, contributors to global development and defenders of the international order.”

“China will support Uzbekistan in its upcoming SCO presidency. I am sure that with the joint efforts of all our member states, the SCO will continue to scale new heights in all areas of cooperation,” he added.

Brazil’s Bolsonaro going to UN meet despite being unvaccinated against COVID

Share

BRAZILIA: Brazil’s Covid-unvaccinated President Jair Bolsonaro said Thursday he will attend next week’s United Nations conclave in New York, effectively defying city authorities who recently announced proof-of-vaccination requirements for all attending leaders and diplomats.

“Next week I will be at the UN General Assembly (UNGA), where I will give an opening speech” on Tuesday, the president said during a social media broadcast.

It will be “a calm speech, very objective, focused on the issues that interest us,” added Bolsonaro, who said he would discuss Brazil’s approach to the coronavirus pandemic, its agriculture business, and energy.

On Wednesday the New York mayor’s office wrote the UNGA laying out the guidelines, including that delegates must show proof of vaccination to enter the debate hall — a move that raised questions about Bolsonaro’s in-person participation.

The letter signed by New York City’s health commissioner said the UN debate hall was classified as a “convention center,” meaning all attendees must be vaccinated, just as other people participating in some indoor activities in the city.

Hours later the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he could not impose the requirement on heads of state.

Bolsonaro, who had the virus last year, has said he would be the “last Brazilian” to get vaccinated.

Brazil, with a population of 213 million, ranks fourth worldwide in number of vaccine doses administered, according to research group Our World in Data.

But the president until now has refused to get the shot, claiming that he is already immunized because his antibody rate remains “at the top.”

Despite a slow start plagued by much controversy that still haunts President Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s coronavirus vaccination campaign is now one of the fastest-paced and farthest-reaching in the world.

While boasting a globally renowned vaccination system, the country of 213 million people only started coronavirus inoculations in January, several weeks after the United States, many European countries and others in South America.

The rollout was delayed by political bickering under a president who belittled the pandemic and spread vaccine falsehoods, then hamstrung by logistical difficulties in the vast country.

But the country with the world’s second-highest Covid-19 death toll — more than 588,000 fatalities reported to date — has seen its coronavirus vaccination rate pick up and its death rate tumble as imported jabs started arriving and local production began.

In the past three months, the number of Brazilians with at least one jab has almost tripled to cover 67.6 percent of the population — slightly higher than in the United States with 63.4 percent and Argentina with 63.8, according to an AFP count.

The figure for those fully vaccinated is much lower, at 36 percent — but enough to put Brazil in third place among the world’s ten most populous countries.

With vaccine supply uncertain at first, Brazil decided to focus on giving a first dose to as large a number of people as possible, and opted for a long interval between the first and second jab.

– ‘Little flu’ –

Logistical delivery problems have largely been ironed out through trial and error, and supply concerns are a thing of the past with Brazil now producing its own AstraZeneca and Sinovac jabs under license.

“The acceleration was seen from May-June, with the arrival and much more consistent supply of vaccines,” Jose David Urbaez of the Society of Infectious Disease told AFP.

As a result, from more than 2,000 daily deaths in June, there are now fewer than 600 per day.

Today, Brazil is the country with the fourth-most doses administered — a total of 214 million — after China, India and the United States.

It is administering the third-most doses daily — some 1.5 million on average per day in the last week, and has started giving shots to teenagers and booster shots to vulnerable people.

One problem the country does not have is vaccine skepticism: More than 90 percent of Brazilians have told pollsters they want the jab.

Brazil’s recent success came despite a chaotic pandemic outset under the leadership of Bolsonaro, who at its height minimized the virus as a “little flu,” fought lockdowns, questioned face masks and rejected various offers of vaccines while pushing unproven drugs such as hydroxychloroquine.

Last December, the president, who had himself contracted Covid-19, suggested the Pfizer vaccine may turn people into crocodiles, cause women to grow beards or men to become effeminate.

He long sought to discredit China’s CoronaVac inoculation, even as the governor of Sao Paulo fought to have it approved.

– Too late for Bolsonaro? –

If the Bolsonaro government had started to negotiate with vaccine manufacturers in mid-2020, like many other countries, “by May or June (this year) Brazil would have already vaccinated its target population,” said Urbaez.

Bolsonaro’s handling of the outbreak has contributed to his popularity tumbling to a lowly 22 percent, according to a poll Thursday, with frequent protest marches to call for his resignation.

There are dozens of outstanding impeachment bids against him, and a Senate committee is investigating his government’s pandemic response.

Bolsonaro is also the subject of several criminal investigations — one of them concerning allegations that he sat on evidence of corruption in a Covid vaccine deal.

Bolsonaro, who came to power in 2019, has rejected all claims of government corruption, instead denouncing the legislature’s inquiry as a political “antic” aimed at forcing him from office.

He will seek reelection in 2022, but worried about his chances, Bolsonaro has launched a series of attacks on the judiciary and the very electoral system itself.

“The acceleration of vaccination will have very positive consequences for Brazil, such as the reduction in the number of deaths and greater reopening of economic activity, but is unlikely to translate into an increase in popularity” for Bolsonaro, said political scientist Mauricio Santoro.

At a health center in Brasilia, retiree Monica de Barros, 57, received her second vaccine.

“Hundreds of thousands of deaths could have been avoided by firmer and less denialist action,” she told AFP.

Proud of Telangana’s contribution in nation building: KTR

Share

HYDERABAD: A day after RBI in its ‘Handbook of statistics on the Indian Economy 2020-21’ declared that Telangana is the fourth largest contributor to the country’s economy, an elated IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao took to twitter on Thursday to express his delight.

Uploading the screenshot of news published in The New Indian Express under the headline, “TS 4th largest contributor to India’s economy,” he expressed pride in the States’s achievement. “Happy and proud that the latest RBI report says Telangana is the 4th largest contributor to India’s economy.

Under the leadership of CM KCR, Telangana continues to punch above its weight,” he tweeted, also pointing out that though the State stood 12th in terms of population numbers and 11th in terms of geographical area in the country, it stood fourth in nation building.

He also requested Telanganites to share the news, indirectly taking potshots at BJP leaders. “Tired of the nonsensical statements; “Humne Telangana Ko Yeh Diya, woh Diya”! Agar Diya kisine tho Telangana Ji Janta ney is Desh ko Diya. And we are proud to be contributing to the Nation,” he added.

Revanth Reddy denied ‘donkey’ charge before KTR provided proof

Share

HYDERABAD: Before TPCC chief Revanth Reddy apologised to Congress MP Dr Shashi Tharoor, earlier on Thursday, Revanth had tried to dismiss the episode by terming the news as fake, and lashed out at MAUD Minister K T Rama Rao.

The day started with Rama Rao tweeting a TNIE report which carried the PCC chief ’s disrespectful comments against Dr Tharoor. KTR said, while tagging the report: “As the chairman of the IT standing Committee, Shashi Tharoor Ji had paid some compliments to the efforts of the Government of Telangana recently. His colleague in Parliament and PCC cheap calls him a Donkey. This is what happens when you have a 3rd rate criminal/thug leading the party (sic).”

Senior Congress leaders decided to demand for Revanth Reddy to be reprimanded for making unsavoury comments against the senior party leader at a media conference in Hyderabad on Wednesday. Shashi Tharoor himself, responding to Rama Rao’s tweet, tweeted: “I am sure he was only expressing his fraternal feelings.” Earlier on Thursday, Revanth’s stand was one of belligerence. Without issuing any formal rebuttal, he termed the news as fake.

He tweeted, targeting KTR: “Born liar and looter @KTRTRS can’t get away with hiding behind @ Shashi Tharoor Ji and fake news. It’s clear that you are trying to mislead current issues of child molestation and corruption charges against your family.” Nailing Revanth Reddy, Rama Rao, in his second tweet along with the audio clip, said: “While scumbags like @revanth_anumula need not be responded to: It’s important to expose filth. Here is his audio clip/comments on Tharoor.

Sent to me by a reporter. I am sure if we send it to a forensic lab, it will match his infamous #Note for Vote voice.” TNIE stands by the report it published on Wednesday. We are in possession of an audio clip of what he said when a reporter asked him for a comment on Dr Shashi Tharoor praising KTR. Following is the verbatim of what he said when a reporter asked for his comment on Dr Shashi Tharoor praising Rama Rao.

Revanth Reddy: He is IT Minister, and Shashi Tharoor came here and lauded him saying he is honest, talented and intelligent.. donkey and horse (gadha hai, ghoda hai). That donkey should be tagged (about his deeds). That donkey should know what is happening here. Speaking two-three words does not mean… Language is not knowledge Language is only communicative… communication skill. If they speak two or four words in English it will not change anything here.

Reporter (national channel): What do you think about…

Revanth: I suppose he is a donkey (Mereku Shashi Tharoor gadha lagta hai) You know the attitude of both is the same. They speak to each other in Zero Hour. You know Zero Hour

Reporter (Telugu channel): Weren’t you invited. Revanth: No I did not go to those useless fellows. If he came to meet us, then why he went there. This kind of people should be expelled.”
