Why Telugu Stars Are Making Fewer Films Today: Insights from D Suresh Babu

As seasoned stars like Nagarjuna, Chiranjeevi, and Balakrishna continue to expand their filmographies—with Nagarjuna launching his 100th film with Ra Karthick, Chiranjeevi gearing up for his 171st under Srikanth Odela, and Balakrishna announcing his 111th with Gopichand Malineni—Venkatesh, currently at 77 films, still has a long way to reach the century mark. Producer D Suresh Babu, Venkatesh’s brother, notes, “I am not sure if he will reach 100 films since he would need another 23 movies, and that looks difficult.”
Suresh Babu recalls that the working patterns of legendary actors like NTR, ANR, and Krishna were very different. “They used to do 8–10 films a year, with Krishna crossing 300 films by shooting 15 annually. Bollywood actor Jeetendra once told me that an actor shouldn’t waste a single day and should work all 365 days. That kind of energy belonged to another era,” he says.
Film counts were consistently higher between the 1950s and 1990s. Chiranjeevi would do four films a year, Nagarjuna two or three, and Balakrishna maintained a similar pace. Today, Suresh Babu explains, the focus has shifted to quality over quantity. Even superstars like Prabhas, Mahesh Babu, Allu Arjun, Jr NTR, and Ram Charan have fewer than 30 films each, despite decades in the industry. He notes that earlier generations often worked to sustain their households or out of sheer passion, whereas the second generation grew up in more secure financial conditions and became selective, choosing films that excite fans.
Modern actors often juggle business interests and typically work only 6–8 months a year, prioritizing work-life balance without undue pressure. With Telugu cinema reaching a global fan base, superstars are meticulous about script quality, execution, VFX timelines, and multi-language shoots, leading to fewer annual releases. Suresh Babu adds, “Even Bollywood and Kollywood stars now have fewer films each year. Hundreds of crores ride on every project, and patience has become key to capturing audience attention.”
Pawan Kalyan Returns to Razole for Palle Panduga 2.0 Inauguration

Pawan Kalyan may have achieved a historic 2024 election sweep with Janasena recording a 100% success rate, but one assembly constituency, Razole, will always hold a special place in his heart.
Razole’s significance stems from the 2019 elections, where it stood by Pawan Kalyan while most other constituencies delivered poor results. It was the only seat Janasena won in 2019, laying the foundation for Kalyan’s political rise. Despite the subsequent defection of Razole MLA Rapaka Varaprasad to the YCP, Kalyan has repeatedly emphasized that he will never forget the people of Razole for their trust and support.
Today, Kalyan returns to Razole not just as a leader but as a heroic politician with a 100% strike rate. As part of the Palle Panduga 2.0 initiative, he will inaugurate multiple projects worth ₹6,787 crores in Shivakodu village, Razole constituency. This homecoming promises to be a memorable event, and Kalyan is expected to deliver an iconic speech, honoring the constituency that played a pivotal role in Janasena’s journey.
Rakul Preet Singh Glows Amid De De Pyaar De 2 Success

Rakul Preet Singh recently reflected on her 2017 film Spyder with Superstar Mahesh Babu, which didn’t quite resonate with audiences. She shared that she doesn’t dwell on failures. “Failure kind of shakes you up, shows you what to fix, and then you move on. I did my job and I know I gave it my best,” she said. That mindset, she added, keeps her grounded and focused.
Currently, Rakul is in a much brighter space. De De Pyaar De 2 is performing well at the box office, crossing the 100 crore mark, and the team is celebrating the success. Positive reviews and strong numbers have brought a wave of relief and excitement for everyone involved.
To mark this happy phase, Rakul shared a fresh set of pictures. She looks effortlessly elegant in a black outfit with a sheer flowy bottom, accessorized with shiny statement earrings, as warm light falls beautifully on her face. Calm, confident, and glowing, she radiates someone quietly enjoying her moment rather than making a spectacle of it.
Roshan–Anaswara Shine in Champion’s First Single

Swapna Cinemas returns with another captivating project, Champion, co-produced by Anandi Art Creations and Concept Films. This period sports–love–action drama features Roshan in the lead, with Anaswara Rajan as the female protagonist.
Following the buzz from the first-look posters, a gripping teaser, and a charming promo introducing Anaswara’s character Chandrakala, the makers have now unveiled the film’s first single, “Gira Gira Gingiraagirey.”
Mickey J Meyer, renowned for his soulful compositions, delivers a tune rich in rustic charm, carrying the very fragrance of village life. The song feels like a celebration—warm, joyful, and deeply rooted in its earthy tone. Kasarla Shyam’s evocative lyrics enhance this mood, painting vivid pictures of rural landscapes, human bonds, and timeless relationships.
Adding to its magic, Ram Miriyala’s heartfelt vocals infuse the track with an enchanting, nostalgic quality.
On screen, Roshan looks energetic and graceful, while Anaswara Rajan mesmerizes with her natural charm and radiant smile. Together, they create a delightful and engaging on-screen pairing that elevates the song’s appeal.
Aadi Saikumar’s Shambhala Builds Strong Pre-Release Buzz

Aadi Saikumar is gearing up for the release of his supernatural thriller Shambhala: A Mystical World, set to hit theatres on December 25, coinciding with Christmas. Directed by Ugandhar Muni, the film weaves together mystery, horror, and a distinctive 1980s period backdrop, offering audiences a refreshing thematic experience.
Backed by Rajasekhar Annabhimoju and Mahidhar Reddy under the Shining Pictures banner, Shambhala marks the costliest project of Aadi Saikumar’s career. Even before its theatrical debut, the film has secured a strong financial base through impressive pre-release deals. According to industry buzz, Aha has acquired the OTT rights, while Zee has reportedly bagged the Telugu satellite rights, though official confirmation is still awaited.
The promotional campaign—particularly the trailer—has generated solid momentum. Praveen K. Bangari’s striking visuals and Sricharan Pakala’s gripping background score have amplified the film’s intrigue and atmosphere.
With a robust pre-release business boosting confidence, Shambhala enters the box office with significant buzz. Ultimately, its success will hinge on how well audiences connect with its supernatural, suspense-driven narrative.
Prasanth Varma’s Bold Claims Amid Jai HanuMan Delays

Director Prasanth Varma continues to be stuck in a prolonged delay with Jai HanuMan, mainly due to ongoing financial disputes among multiple producers. Though he announced several new projects after the blockbuster success of HanuMan, none of them have moved to the sets yet.
With complaints still pending at the Film Chamber of Commerce and the Producers’ Council, the official launch of Jai HanuMan remains uncertain.
Yet, during a MasterClass session at the ongoing IFFI in Goa, Prasanth Varma made some bold statements about his working process. He revealed that he now signs agreements with producers declaring that he alone will decide the film’s release date, not the producers—citing negative past experiences as the reason for this strict clause.
However, industry circles are pointing out the irony: instead of worrying about controlling release dates, his top priority should be securing a proper launch date for his next film.
Akhanda 2 Pushes Hard in Hindi Market Ahead of Release

With just ten days left for release, Nandamuri Balakrishna and Boyapati Srinu’s Akhanda 2 has shifted into high-gear promotions—particularly targeting the Hindi market. The Telugu version hardly needs any extra push. Balakrishna’s massive fan base, combined with the proven blockbuster streak of the Balakrishna–Boyapati combo, ensures strong momentum in Telugu states.
But the Hindi strategy is entirely different, and now the reason behind the aggressive marketing is finally clear. According to exclusive information accessed by manatelugu .com, the producers have closed a lucrative OTT deal with Netflix. However, there’s a catch: Netflix will offer additional financial incentives only if the Hindi version crosses a certain box-office milestone.
This clause has made the film’s Hindi theatrical run extremely crucial. Balakrishna, despite his dominance in Telugu states, has never established a strong footprint in North India. None of his past films have made a significant mark in Hindi territories. But he is reportedly confident that Akhanda 2 will break that long-standing pattern and open new markets for him.
With the clock ticking and stakes higher than ever, all eyes are now on how the film performs beyond the South.
Producers Balk at Ramya Krishna’s Fee in a ₹200-Crore Project

A massive big-budget film is currently in production, with a huge portion of its budget already locked in for the star cast and the director. The lead actor is reportedly taking home over ₹150 crore, the director around ₹50 crore, and the heroine close to ₹20 crore. With numbers like these, the project is clearly operating in a “spend without hesitation” zone.
But in a surprising twist, the makers have balked at signing a senior actress for one of the film’s most crucial roles.
The part was initially offered to Ramya Krishna, an actress known for her commanding screen presence and highly selective approach to roles. However, the production house allegedly backed out after hearing her remuneration demand.
Industry insiders are baffled. Ramya Krishna usually charges ₹10–12 lakh per day, a modest figure for a project of this scale. When the male lead and director are taking home astronomical pay cheques, her fee is not even a fraction of that.
Yet the producers are said to be in “cost-optimisation mode” and are now hunting for another actress willing to work for less.
Many in the industry are calling this logic laughable—wondering how a team that is freely shelling out crores elsewhere suddenly feels the need to save money by trimming the budget of a key performer. If anything, it’s being dubbed the biggest irony of the year.
