Needless to say, Ghani is one of the much-awaited films in Tollywood. Many digital streaming giants had already held talks with the makers to acquire the rights of the film.

Now, the latest news is that Telugu streaming platform, Aha, has bought the digital and satellite rights of Ghani for a whopping 24 crores. This is a massive amount for Varun Tej’s pan-India film. However, it remains to be seen to whom Aha sell the satellite rights.

Twitter Inc failed to comply with new IT Rules: Centre tells HC

Share

New Delhi: The Centre on Monday told the Delhi High Court that social media giant Twitter Inc has failed to comply with India’s new IT Rules, which could lead to losing its immunity conferred under the Information Technology(IT) Act.

The Centre, in an affidavit filed in the high court, said as per the details obtained from Twitter’s website or mobile application, as an interim, the grievances from India are being handled by the platform’s official located in the US which amounts to non-compliance of the IT Rules, 2021.

The IT Rules, 2021 are the law of the land and Twitter is mandatorily required to comply with the same, said the affidavit filed in response to a plea by lawyer Amit Acharya, in which he claimed non-compliance of the Centre’s new IT Rules by the microblogging platform.

The matter is scheduled to come up for hearing on Tuesday.

The Centre’s affidavit, filed by N Samaya Balan, working as Scientist-E in the Cyber Law Group with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY), said admittedly Twitter Inc is an intermediary within the meaning of provision of IT Act, 2000 and a Significant Social Media Intermediary (SSMI) under the IT Rules 2021.

It said that inspite of the three months’ time granted to all SSMIs to comply with the IT Rules 2021 having expired on May 26, Twitter has “failed to fully comply” with the same. The IT Rules were notified on February 25.

“I submit that the respondent no.2 (Twitter Inc) had initially appointed the interim resident grievance officer (RGO) and the interim nodal contact person. Later the respondent no.2 (Twitter Inc) informed the answering respondent (MEITY) that the said interim RGO and nodal officer have withdrawn/ resigned from their positions.

“I submit that as per the details gleaned from the respondent No. 2 website/mobile application, in the interim the grievances from India are being handled by personnel of respondent No. 2 situated in the United States of America which amounts to non-compliance with the IT Rules 2021,” the affidavit said.

The affidavit, filed through Central government standing counsel Ripudaman Singh Bhardwaj, said that Twitter has failed to comply with the IT Rules, 2021 as on July 1 for the following reasons — chief compliance officer has not been appointed; the position of the RGO is vacant; the position of nodal contact person (even on an interim basis) is vacant, and the physical contact address, which was shown to be there on May 29, is not available again on Twitter website.

“I submit that the IT Rules, 2021 are the law of the land and respondent no. 2 is mandatorily required to comply with the same.

“I submit any non-compliance amounts to breach of the provisions of the IT Rules, 2021 thereby leading to respondent no. 2 losing its immunity conferred under section 79(1) of the IT Act, 2000,” the officer said.

The reply added that the immunity conferred on intermediaries under the provision of law is a conditional immunity subject to the intermediary satisfying the conditions under the Act and as provided in Rule 7, failure to observe the IT rules,2021 results in provisions of Section 79(1) of the IT Act, not being applicable to such an intermediary.

The Centre said as Twitter qualifies as a SSMI, it is obligated to comply with the provisions of the IT Rules, 2021.

On July 3, Twitter has also filed its affidavit stating that it was in the “final stages” of appointing an interim chief compliance officer and an interim resident grievance officer under the new IT Rules.

In the meantime, grievances raised by Indian users are being looked into by a grievance officer, it has said.

The microblogging site has also said it may fall within the definition of a “significant social media intermediary” under the IT Rules, 2021.

The rules seek to regulate dissemination and publication of content in cyber space, including social media platforms, and were notified in February by the central government.

Twitter said in “substantial compliance” with Rule 3(2) and Rule 4(1)(c) of the new IT Rules, it did appoint an interim resident grievance officer.

However, even before steps could be taken to completely formalise the arrangement, the interim resident grievance officer withdrew his candidature on June 21, it said and denied that it has not complied with the intermediary guidelines.

In his plea, filed through advocates Akash Vajpai and Manish Kumar, Acharya said that he came to know about the alleged non-compliance when he tried to lodge a complaint against a couple of tweets.

Twitter has argued that the plea is not maintainable as a writ petition and that Acharya moved the court “prematurely” without waiting for the redressal of his grievance under the rules.

It said Acharya had no locus standi to raise a complaint with respect to the tweets in question and added it has informed that the complaint has now been considered and disposed of.

Revanth’s mind-games worry the Telangana BJP

Share

Telangana PCC’s new chief Revanth Reddy is showing great aggression that has not been seen in the Congress Party for a long time. At the same time, he is also showing his pragmatic side in abundance. He is showing that he is refreshingly different from other politicians when it comes to making claims.

Talking to a media channel recently, Revanth Reddy said that the Congress has not won from Huzurabad sinc 1983. He said after the TDP came to power, the constituency has passed into the hands of anti-Congress parties. He said he would make every effort to wrest the seat from the other parties and would work hard to win from Huzurabad. Thus he has given enough indications that it is very difficult to win from Huzurabad. Yet, he added that would make an effort to win and would leave no stone unturned to win the seat. Thus he is trying say that even if the Congress loses, he should not be blamed for it. So, any increase in vote share will go to his credit.

At the same time, he is saying that if the BJP wins, it should not be seen as the victory of the party. It should essentially be seen as a victory of Eatala Rajender’s personal influence, charisma and support base. Thus, he is trying to say that a BJP victory should be deemed as the personal victory of the BJP. He said if Eatala Rajender nothing except the colour of the flag changes. He said Eatala has great influence in the constituency.

He is also claiming that both the BJP and the TRS are spending close to Rs 200 crore for the Huzurabad byelections. He said the Congress will only work with the help of the cadre and sincere leaders. He has also indicated that his target is not Huzurabad, but 2023 elections. This again shows his clear idea of what to focus and what to do for his personal progress.

His comments that a victory of Eatala should not be seen as the victory of the BJP have now become a hot topic of discussion in the BJP. They are worried that Revanth’s argument would gain currency and they would not be able to get the credit to the party.

Kamal Haasan has a strong message for new age filmmakers on creating classics

Share

Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan is undoubtedly one of the best actors in Indian cinema. He made his acting debut as a child artist and established himself as one of the versatile actors in the country. In his illustrious career, he became a part of several classic and cult classic films.

Kamal Haasan’s ‘Michael Madana Kamarajan’ remains one of the cult classics not only in Tamil Cinema but in Indian cinema. The Dasavatharam star Kamal Haasan portrayed four different getups in the film.

Director Alphonse Putheran, who was behind films like ‘Premam’ and ‘Neram’ asked Kamal Haasan to do a masterclass on ‘Michael Madana Kamarajan’. A few other directors have also requested Kamal do the same.

Kamal Haasan accepted their request and took to Instagram to do a masterclass with a series of pictures. He shared an interesting trivia behind the making of ‘Michael Madana Kamarajan’.

Kamal Haasan has advice for the new filmmakers too. He said that instead of getting impressed by the films which the actors did 30 years ago, they should make classic films on their own.

“When I said master class I was not talking about me as the master. The reason I did not teach is because teaching needs a bigger sacrifice, that which equals a mother. I am a student, a perennial student which means I am more selfish than a teacher and I am willing to learn with the class but to address a class am not too sure,” Kamal Haasan said in one of the Instagram posts.

Kamal Haasan showered praises on filmmakers like K. Balachander, Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, and Ananthu who created space for him to excel in the space and called the filmmakers his masters.

Sri Lanka becomes first South Asian country to receive US-made Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines

Share

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka on Monday received the first batch 26,000 doses of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, becoming the first South Asian country to get the US-made jab.

The consignment was part of the 800,000 COVID-19 jabs to be delivered to the island nation in the next few weeks.

Health officials said that the 26,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine was the start of the 5 million Pfizer jabs expected by year end.

“Great news this morning as #SriLanka becomes the first country in South Asia to purchase a contingent of #Pfizer vaccines. I am proud of the work that is being done by my government to ensure vaccines for all Sri Lankans. Vaccination continues throughout the country,” President Gotabaya Rajapaksa tweeted.

A total of five million vaccines financed through the World Bank’s Sri Lanka COVID-19 Emergency Response and Health System Preparedness Project will be supplied by December 2021, the World Bank said in its statement.

“The delivery of this first batch of vaccines reflects the joint work of the government of Sri Lanka and its partners to ensure fair access to safe and effective vaccines for Sri Lankans,” Faris H. Hadad-Zervos, World Bank Country Director for Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka said in a statement.

“More vaccines are under review and will arrive by year’s end,” the statement said.

The global financial body is giving Sri Lanka USD 298.07 million dollars through its COVID-19 Emergency Response and Health System Preparedness Project, including an additional 80.5 million for vaccines.

The vaccines are procured through the procedure established in the loan agreement signed with Sri Lanka in May 2021, the statement said.

“Patient treatment capacity will be improved through the planned district-level oxygen generating plants, ensuring oxygen supplies are available to patients,” the agency said.

“New isolation units and ICU/High Dependency Unit facilities have been set up in secondary and tertiary hospitals. World Bank funds have also helped provide essential supplies and services to 70 COVID-19 treatment centers,” it said.

Sri Lanka has so far used AstraZeneca manufactured by the Serum Institute of India, Chinese Sinopharm and Russian Sputnik V in the country’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

By 10 am on Monday, some 2.9 million of the island’s 20 million population had received their first jabs with 1.23 million receiving both the doses.

According to Johns Hopkins University data, the country has reported 265,630 COVID-19 cases and 3,236 deaths.

Record COVID-19 cases, deaths force Bangladesh govt to extend nationwide lockdown

Share

DHAKA: Bangladesh’s single-day COVID-19 deaths and cases surpassed previous records on Monday with 164 more fatalities and 9,964 fresh infections, forcing the government to extend the nationwide lockdown by one more week.

According to officials, the coronavirus has so far claimed 15,229 lives and infected 954,881 people in the country.

“The COVID-19 toll now stands at 15,229 with 164 (overnight) deaths, as many as 9,964 people tested positive, raising the infection rate to 29.30 per cent during the 24-hour time span,” Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) spokesman Professor Nazmul Islam said.

According to the official data, the country witnessed the highest number of single-day deaths alongside infection cases on Monday.

The previous highest toll was 153 and the number of infection cases was 8,822, recorded on July 4 and June 30 respectively.

The DGHS report came shortly after authorities ordered the extension of a seven-day nationwide “strict restrictions” until July 14 “in view of the current situation of the COVID-19 surge”.

“Punitive legal actions will be taken if someone comes out of home without very emergency needs during the (shutdown) period,” a cabinet division statement said, adding that military troops would patrol the streets alongside police to enforce the order.

Bangladesh started witnessing the fresh surge last month when officials said the deadly Delta variant of the virus was engulfing districts bordering India.

The authorities initially tried to protect Dhaka by enforcing a lockdown in seven districts surrounding the capital on June 22.

However, they were forced to enforce a nationwide lockdown last week, closing all offices and businesses, ordering vehicles to stay off the roads and suspending train movements and domestic flight services.

Several health experts called the situation “extremely bad” while studies suggest the highly transmissible Delta variant is responsible for 70 per cent of the infections in Bangladesh.

“The situation is worsening every day but we are yet to see the peak,” national technical committee on COVID-19 and leading virologist Nazrul Islam said.

An expert study earlier said that Bangladesh was likely to witness the peak in mid-July this year.

Pawan Kalyan getting back in action!

Share

Jana Sena Chief Pawn Kalyan has been missing in action for the past several months, due to various reasons, including testing positive for coronavirus. After he tested positive for coronavirus, due to the lack of any proper leadership in the party, the party went completely silent in the state.

Pawan is planning to hold a meeting at his party office in Mangalagiri on the 7th of this month, to discuss the action plan of the party. Pawan was a part of the BJP’s Tirupati by-elections, and while the BJP carried on Dharnas against the government in the absence of Pawan, they didn’t make Jana Sena a part of it. The Jana Sena too fought against the government, but it was to no effect.

The YSRCP govenremtn has been receiving negative feedback from everywhere in the state, due to the way it’s been behaving towards the poor, and the government’s failure in creating jobs for the jobless in the state. On top of that, newer scandals involving members of the YSRCP are breaking out every day. It is being said that Pawan is planning to combat these problems in the upcoming days, hoping to create a wave in the people and to bring back the Jana Sena to its prior momentum.

JC comes in support of YSR!

Share

The JC brothers have become silent in recent days, who were otherwise known to be aggressive and loud-mouthed. After Prabhakar Reddy got elected as the chairman of Tadipatri municipality, the silence of the JC brothers became more prominent.

Prabhakar Reddy even went on to say that he won the elections because of Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, as there wouldn’t have been a chance for him to win if Jagan didn’t want him to. Diwakar Reddy is confined to spending time in his farms and orchards these days, while Prabhakar Reddy is seen in Tadipatri every now and then.

In an interesting turn of events, Prabhakar Reddy, on Monday, made several statements in support of Jagan’s father, the former Chief Minister of united Andhra Pradesh, YS Rajasekhar Reddy. He questioned the YSRCP leaders, asking them what they were doing, when YSR was being abused and called names, by the Telangana ministers.

He said that it’s sad to see that the AP ministers are keeping calm and subdued despite such unacceptable behaviour from Telangana ministers. He said that the YSRCP ministers should revert back just as strongly, at Telangana ministers.
