Jagan writes to PM Modi over water disputes with Telangana

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has written separate letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Water Resources Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on the water dispute with Telangana state.

Jagan in his letter asked the Center to intervene immediately and urged stopping the water used illegally by Telangana for power generation. He demanded that all projects between the two states on the Krishna River be protected by the central forces.

The AP CM wrote, “I request immediate action be taken by the Government of India, to notify the jurisdiction of KRMB and to take over all offtakes of common reservoirs with CISF protection and safeguard the interests of the State of Andhra Pradesh.”

He mentioned that due to the actions of Telangana, drinking water problems will arise in Rayalaseema as well as Nellore and Prakasam districts. Telangana water is being used against the rules without any agricultural requirements.

Although the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) directed Telangana to suspend power generation immediately, the CM KCR led state disobeyed the orders and continues to draw water illegally.

Mentioning about unapproved actions of Telangana, which is putting AP into a disadvantageous position, Jagan asked for an immediate resolution to the water sharing issue.

Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece Saamana in its recent editorial opined that Maharashtra is in the middle of the Kurukshetra battle as the state is fighting against several fronts and the BJP is enjoying the situation faced by Maha.

Besides dreaded Covid, other fronts like central agencies are creating a lot of trouble for the state. Maharashtra should fight against them like how Mamata Banerjee had won against the fronts, the editorial said.

Adding further, Saamana said that the saffron party which is enjoying the prevailing situations should not remain as Abhimanyu.

The editorial came at the time when media reports are abuzz that Shiv Sena which is having internal issues with NCP and Congress, fellow parties of the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance is looking at joining hands with BJP yet again.

These speculations started when Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May to seek his help in the Maratha reservation dispute.

Burning Star pledges to take care of young girls, who became orphans

Young Tollywood actor Burning Star ‘Sampoornesh Babu’ who makes us with his movies has a big heart and is known for his generosity. On several instances, he came forward to help the poor.

He proved his big heart for one more time by lending a helping hand to two young girls, who became orphans after their parents took the extreme step by hanging due to no income.

The sad incident took place in Chellapur of Dubbaka mandal, which also happens to be the native place of Sampoornesh Babu. The actor, who learned about the sad incident, supported them.

Sampoornesh Babu met the young girls at their residence and gave a check of Rs 25,000. Producer Sai Rajesh had also contributed to the help made by the actor. He had also pledged to take care of the education of the young girls.

Earlier, the actor had lent a helping hand to the kin of noted film journalist TNR by giving Rs 50,000 to the family. TNR breathed his last due to the novel Coronavirus earlier in May.

On the work front, the Burning Star will be seen next in Bazaar Rowdy, which is expected to be released soon. He also has ‘Cauliflower’ in his hand, which marks his fifth film as the leading cast.

KARIMNAGAR: Former Minister and BJP leader Eatala Rajender made sensational comments against Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, alleging that the latter was shedding crocodile tears over schedule caste communites. Speaking to the media at Jammikunta here on Wednesday, he suggested that SCs should not be insulted.

“If not for the upcoming Huzurabad byelection, KCR would not have come out of his farmhouse,” he said. Rajender also questioned the TRS government on how much it has spent on education of SCs and how many SC students went abroad for higher studies under its scheme. “Not a single SC officer is working at CM camp office. There are no special scheme for SCs in the State. The TRS government is not sincere towards SCs. In the past few years, funds meant for SC welfare schemes are being diverted to other welfare schemes,” he alleged.

“The land purification scheme and revenue reforms did injustice to several SCs,” he said. Criticising KCR over double bed room scheme, the Minister said: “Such scheme were implemented only in Sircilla, Siddipet and Gajwel constituencies. The 2BHK works are still pending in Huzurabad and other constituencies,” he added.

Twitter down for some users, few features inaccessible

New Delhi: Many users faced glitches while accessing Twitter on Thursday morning. The Twitter App seemingly worked. However, users faced problems while accessing the microblogging site via browser site. Twitter flagged the issue and has assured users that it would be fixed soon.

Twitter acknowledged the glitch and tweeted in reply to the users. “Profiles’ Tweets may not be loading for some of you on the web and we’re currently working on a fix. Thanks for sticking with us!” it tweeted.

“Tweets should now be visible on profiles, but other parts of Twitter for the web may not be loading for you. We’re continuing to work on getting things back to normal,” Twitter added.

Users complained that the browser website is showing “Something went wrong” messages on the screen every time they try to access the website.

Twitter to let users set security key as only two-factor authentication method

Washington: The micro-blogging site Twitter, on Wednesday, announced that it has rolled out a new feature to use a security key as the only two-factor authentication method on both mobile and web.

This new feature comes after Twitter announced the same in March. According to The Verge, physical security keys have advantages over other two-factor methods like an authenticator app or SMS because they do not rely on a code that a bad server could intercept. On a related note, this is not the first time that Twitter has announced a new feature related to improvising the security on its platform.

In recent years, Twitter has added a number of features to beef up login security. The company expanded beyond SMS in 2017 by adding support for authentication apps like Google Authenticator and Authy.

In 2019, Twitter let you enable two-factor authentication without giving your phone number, a positive change given that SMS can be vulnerable to SIM-swapping attacks.

Will look at text for India’s WTO move on vaccines IP waiver: UK vaccines minister

LONDON: The UK will look at any text submitted to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) seeking an intellectual property (IP) waiver to boost the supply and production of COVID-19 vaccines, the country’s vaccines minister said on Thursday.

Nadhim Zahawi, the minister in charge of the UK’s COVID-19 vaccine deployment, however, issued a word of warning over any patent waiver moves to ensure they do not impact the confidence in the jabs being administered. Since the US threw its support behind temporarily suspending IP protections for COVID-19 vaccines back in May, the movement led by India and South Africa has come into sharp focus.

“President (Joe) Biden talked about looking at vaccine IP. We would look at any text presented at the WTO because no one is safe until we are all safe,” Zahawi said, in response to a question on patent waivers at the India Global Forum in London.

“I would issue a word of warning here, that simple solutions don’t always work for complex manufacturing requirements because technology transfer is not easy. Quality control is very important. There are no easy answers,” he warned.

The Cabinet minister also revealed that he had spoken to the Serum Institute of India (SII) this week and was informed that it is now producing the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, named Covishield in India, at the rate of 100 million doses a month which would soon be doubled to 200 million.

“They (SII) are backed by the world’s most highly regarded regulator, the UK’s MHRA (Medical and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency), which makes them one of the safest, best and largest vaccine manufacturers in the world. They are also about to manufacture the Novavax vaccine, which is looking like a really great vaccine,” he said.

“India’s aspiration to be the pharmacy of the world is incredibly exciting for us,” he added.

The minister’s comments came as the National Health Service (NHS) launched plans for COVID-19 vaccines booster jabs as part of a two-stage programme alongside the annual flu vaccination programme from September. One jab in each arm will be promoted as a way of protecting against not only COVID-19 variants but also the seasonal flu.

“Our COVID-19 vaccination programme has been a roaring success, with almost 85 per cent of adults across the UK receiving a first dose and more than 62 per cent getting both doses,” said Zahawi.

“We are now planning ahead to future-proof this progress and protect our most vulnerable from variants and flu ahead of the winter. Vaccines are the best way to stay on top of this virus and I urge everybody to take up the offer as soon as possible,” he added.

The move is aimed at prolonging the protection vaccines provide in those who are most vulnerable to serious COVID-19 ahead of the winter months.

Trump Organisation CFO surrenders ahead of expected charges

WASHINGTON: Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg surrendered to authorities early Thursday ahead of expected charges against him and former President Donald Trump’s company, according to multiple news outlets.

Weisselberg was seen walking into the the courthouse in lower Manhattan around 6:20 a.m. with his lawyer.

New York prosecutors are expected to announce the first criminal indictment Thursday in a two-year investigation into Trump’s business practices, accusing his namesake company and Weisselberg of tax crimes related to fringe benefits for employees.

The charges against the Trump Organization and its chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, remained sealed Wednesday night but were to be unveiled ahead of an afternoon arraignment at a state court in Manhattan, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The people were not authorized to speak about an ongoing investigation and did so on condition of anonymity.

There was no indication Trump himself would be charged at this stage of the investigation, jointly pursued by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. and New York Attorney General Letitia James, both Democrats.

Trump did not respond to reporters’ shouted questions about the New York case as he visited Texas on Wednesday, but earlier in the week, the Republican had blasted the New York prosecutors as “rude, nasty, and totally biased” and said his company’s actions were “standard practice throughout the U.S. business community, and in no way a crime.”

The planned charges were said to be linked to benefits the company gave to top executives, like the use of apartments, cars and school tuition, the people familiar with the matter told the AP.

Messages seeking comment were left with a spokesperson and lawyers for the Trump Organization. Weisselberg’s lawyer, Mary Mulligan, declined to comment. The Manhattan district attorney’s office declined to comment.

Vance, who leaves office at the end of the year, has been conducting a wide-ranging investigation into a variety of matters involving Trump and the Trump Organization.

His office has looked into hush-money payments paid to women on Trump’s behalf and truthfulness in the company’s property valuations and tax assessments, among other matters.

Vance fought a long battle to get Trump’s tax records and has been subpoenaing documents and interviewing company executives and other Trump insiders.

James assigned two lawyers from her office to work with Vance’s team after her office found evidence of possible criminal wrongdoing while conducting a separate civil investigation of Trump.

Weisselberg, 73, had come under scrutiny, in part, because of questions about his son’s use of a Trump apartment at little or no cost.

Barry Weisselberg, who managed a Trump-operated ice rink in Central Park, testified in a 2018 divorce deposition that Trump Parc East apartment was a “corporate apartment, so we didn’t have rent.”

Barry’s ex-wife, Jen Weisselberg, has been cooperating with both inquiries and given investigators reams of tax records and other documents.

The case against Allen Weisselberg — a loyal lieutenant to Trump and his real estate-developer father, Fred — could give prosecutors the means to pressure the executive into cooperating and telling them what he knows about Trump’s business dealings.

The Trump Organization is the business entity through which the former president manages his many entrepreneurial affairs, including his investments in office towers, hotels and golf courses, his many marketing deals and his television pursuits. Trump sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, have been in charge of the company’s day-to-day operations since he became president.

Although Trump isn’t expected to be charged Thursday, allegations against the company bearing his name raise questions about his knowledge of — or involvement in — business that practices prosecutors suspect were illegal.

James Repetti, a tax lawyer and professor at Boston College Law School, said a company like the Trump Organization would generally have a responsibility to withhold taxes not just on salary, but other forms of compensation — like the use of an apartment or automobile.

Such perks wouldn’t be considered taxable income if they were required as a condition of employment, Repetti said, such as providing an apartment for the convenience of an employee who is required to be at the office or worksite at odd or frequent hours, or allowing the use of a car for business purposes.

Another prominent New York City real estate figure, the late Leona Helmsley, was convicted of tax fraud in a federal case that arose from her company paying to remodel her home without her reporting that as income.

The Trump Organization case involves possible violations of New York state tax laws.

“The IRS routinely looks for abuse of fringe benefits when auditing closely held businesses,” Repetti said. “The temptation for the business is that it claims a tax deduction for the expense, while the recipient does not report it in income.”
