Sri Lanka denies possibility of community transmission of Indian variant of COVID-19
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka on Tuesday said it does not foresee the possibility of community transmission of the Indian variant of the COVID-19 despite detection of one case in the island nation last week.
Government spokesman Udaya Gammanpila said there was no chance for a community spread of the B.1.617 variant here as the individual carrying the variant had been found at a quarantine centre.
The individual, who had recently returned from India, was detected on Saturday.
The Minister for COVID health care, Dr Sudarshani Fernandopulle had said that the individual had undergone quarantine for 14 days and had been released from the centre after a further 7 days under watch.
Last week, Sri Jayewardenapura University’s immunology and molecular medicine unit had issued a report giving details of the variants found in the country.
They are: B.1.1.7 (UK variant), B.1.428 (Denmark/European/Middle East variant), B.1.411 (Sri Lankan variant), B 1.525 (Nigerian variant) and the B.1.351 (South African variant).
The current surge of cases is said to be from the UK variant, according to health experts.
In its bid to break the current surge, the government last night announced internal travel restrictions between the provinces.
This could be extended to limit travel between the districts, the COVID prevention chief and the Army Commander Gen Shavendra Silva said.
Sri Lanka on Sunday recorded over 2,600 coronavirus cases, the highest-ever single-day count recorded so far in the island nation since the pandemic began last year.
Sri Lanka has recorded nearly 126,000 cases by Sunday.
The total number of deaths due to COVID-19 in the country is 827.

Jagan write another letter to Modi, on Bharat Biotech this time
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister has written yet another letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, as his government continues to face severe criticism on the shortage of oxygen, hospital beds and vaccines in the state.
In this letter, Jagan targetted Bharat Biotech and said that the company has to transfer its technology to other companies so that more vaccines could be manufactured, which would then cure the country’s problem of vaccine shortage.
Several YSRCP members and CM’s Advisor Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy have already said that Bharat Biotech is not providing vaccines to Andhra Pradesh, and have asked Telugu Desam Party Chief Chandrababu Naidu to speak with the officials of Bharat Biotech and procure vaccines for the state, as they belong to the same caste.
On the other hand, Chandrababu reminded the YSRCP government that the Centre had given every state permission to buy vaccines from Bharat Biotech and that the AP government should do the same as well. Of course, the AP government has its own obvious reasons for not buying vaccines. In his letter, Jagan also mentioned that the National Institute of Virology and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have extended help to AP, in the process of procuring vaccines, according to the state’s demands.

Jagan wants to explore global options for COVID-19 vaccine
VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday directed senior officials to explore the possibility of inviting global tenders to get Covid vaccine in view of the limited supply of the vaccine from the Centre.Taking stock of Covid-19 situation in the State, vaccination and other measures taken to control and contain the virus spread, the Chief Minister said people should be clearly explained the facts and figures pertaining to Covid vaccine.
“Supply of vaccine doses to the States is completely coordinated by the Centre. How much the State receives and when is decided by it. Even the amount of the vaccines that the States are meant to procure directly from the vaccine producers is also determined by the Centre. Vaccine production and availability are in purview of the Centre and States have no say in the matter,” he said.
Taking objections to the remarks made by the Opposition leader and members, the Chief Minister said some vested interests and a section of media were propagating false information against the State government and creating fear among the people. He said it would take six months to complete vaccination process in the State provided that one crore vaccines were supplied per month. However, at present the State is receiving only 19 lakh vaccines per month.
During the daily briefing on Covid update, Principal Secretary (Health) Anil Kumar Singhal said even if the State government was ready to make the entire cost of the vaccine upfront, the vaccine producing companies were not in a position to produce the required amount needed by the States. “In fact, the Centre is already on the job to ensure that the production capacity of those companies are ramped up to address the vaccine needs of the country,” he said. During the review meeting, Jagan said that ANMs and Asha workers should be clearly informed on vaccination details so that long queues could be avoided.
