Contempt case against Jagan government?

Share

The Andhra Pradesh state high court, which rapped the Jagan Mohan Reddy government in Dr Sudhakar case and also in suspension of former intelligence chief A B Venkateshwar Rao, found fault with the government in yet another case on Friday.

It was on continuation of YSR Congress party colours on the gram panchayat buildings despite the earlier orders given by the high court and Supreme Court.

The court also quashed the government order (GO Ms No. 623) on painting of colours to the gram panchayat offices.

The high court wondered why the government had issued the GO on painting the government buildings despite the earlier orders and sought to know why a contempt court should not be filed against the government.

Seeking an explanation from the panchayat raj secretary and chief secretary in this regard, the court asked the Registrar of High Court to start the procedure for a contempt case against the government by May 28, if the government doesn’t take any decision in this regard.

The high court had earlier raised objections to the painting of government buildings with the YSRC party colours and said it should not be done.

In an attempt to follow the HC orders, the government ordered that a terracotta colour be added to the border of the buildings, so that it should not appear like a YSRC colour.

This was once again challenged in the high court, stating that the government had not removed the party colours, but only added another colour to it.

Pac-Man turns 40: Here’s the story of the world’s most successful arcade game

Share

Tokyo: Forty years ago, a new video game featuring a bright yellow, dot-chomping, ghost-dodging character called Pac-Man appeared in Tokyo. It would become the most successful arcade game of all time.

The hero—shaped like a mouth opening and closing—races around a maze noisily gobbling dots and occasionally fruit for extra points, all the while avoiding four cunning ghosts named Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde.

As every Pac-Man player knows, the greatest joy comes from turning the tables by munching a power pellet, sending the ghosts fleeing in all directions as they suddenly become edible themselves.

The game was originally called Puck-Man (an onomatopoeic play on the Japanese word “paku”, meaning to gobble) but it was changed when it launched in the United States for fear gamers would inevitably change the “P” to an “F”.

Game designer Toru Iwatani came up with the shape for the adorable hero when he took a small slice from a pizza and realised the remainder looked like a wide-open mouth.

Pac-Man was aimed at women and couples—a different audience to the violent alien shoot-em-ups popular in Japanese arcades at the time, Iwatani explained in a 2010 interview with Wired magazine.

The first edition was placed in a cinema in the trendy Tokyo district of Shibuya rather than a male-dominated arcade to test the target audience, he said.

“The women and couples were very happy about the machine, very excited. They came up to it and put their hands on it, so we thought that our target concept had been very much in sync and correct,” he said.

Hard-core gamers turned up their noses but “it was for people who didn’t play games on a daily basis—women, children, the elderly”.

The idea of Pac-Man turning the tables on his spooky tormentors came from the cartoon series Popeye, where the nautical hero is only able to take on his nemesis Bluto after a healthy dose of spinach, Iwatani explained.

‘Tremendously monotonous’

From these humble beginnings, Pac-Man would go on to be recognised by Guinness World Records as the most successful coin-operated arcade game of all time.

It has spawned several spin-offs, including “Pac ‘n Roll”, “Ms. Pac-Man”, “Pac-in-Time” and “Pac Panic”—a massive money spinner for creators Bandai Namco.

The firm claims the loveable character has a brand recognition of 90 percent around the world—“one of the most recognised on the planet”.

To celebrate the game’s 30th birthday, Google unveiled its first-ever playable “Doodle” and the internet giant also rolled out a version of the game for its Maps service—turning the real streets of a city into a labyrinth to gobble up pellets and ghosts.

According to Wired, the “perfect score” is 3,333,360 points—possible only by getting to the final level 256 without losing a life and eating every dot, fruit and ghost possible.

“It was tremendously monotonous,” Wired quoted the first record-holder, Billy Mitchell, as saying.

Pac-Man’s 40th was celebrated with a special Twitter hashtag in Japan, with fans all over the country wishing their hero a happy birthday.

“The characters are colourful and cute. It was so fun. I remember I played a lot at my relative’s house. Happy birthday Pac-Man!” said one.

Tech giants Facebook, Google, Twitter sell work from home as the new culture

Share

Oakland, California: For a preview of the future of office work, watch how the biggest tech companies are preparing for a post-pandemic world.

Silicon Valley and Seattle giants — Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Twitter — were the first to send their employees home as the virus spread to the U.S. Now they’re among the last to return them to the office. Some of their employees might never go back.

The companies are studying what their highly-paid, highly-valued employees want, using their own technology to make remote work easier and looking to hire new workers outside of big city hubs. It’s a potentially huge turnaround after years in which companies like Amazon and Google chased scarce tech talent by opening or expanding offices in hip urban locations such as San Francisco and New York.

Such a shift might also amount to a repudiation of the notion that creative work demands corporate campuses reminiscent of college, with free food, ping pong tables and open office plans designed to encourage unplanned interactions.

The result could re-imagine not just Silicon Valley but other cities as the companies expand hiring in places like Atlanta, Dallas and Denver, where Facebook plans to open new “hubs” for its new, mostly remote hires.

Change won’t happen quickly, though. “We want to make sure we move forward in a measured way,” said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg during an employee town hall Thursday that was broadcast live on his Facebook page.

Facebook, which has nearly 45,000 employees, is looking five to 10 years down the line as it plans for more remote work, even when COVID-19 is no longer a threat that requires most of its employees to work from home. Since the coronavirus has upended work and office life, even companies with fewer resources and slower-moving cultures are likely to follow.

“Many companies are learning that their workers are just as or even more productive working from home,” said Andy Challenger, senior vice president of staffing firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Zuckerberg said a Facebook employee survey found that about 20% of workers were “extremely or very interested” in moving to full-time remote work after virus-related restrictions are lifted. Another 20% were “somewhat” interested and the largest group wanted flexibility, with some remote and some in-office work. Eventually, Zuckerberg said, as many as half of Facebook’s workers could be working remotely. But he cautioned that this is years, perhaps even a decade, away.

Twitter went even further, announcing last week that it will allow some employees to work from home on a permanent basis, a plan CEO Jack Dorsey hatched before the coronavirus. His other company, Square, which like Twitter is based in San Francisco, is doing the same. Some new U.S.-based job listings for Twitter give the option for hires to work in cities like San Francisco, New York and Washington D.C. but also remotely full time anywhere in the country.

It’s too early to know whether remote work options will mean an exodus of highly-paid tech workers from San Francisco and Silicon Valley, where they’ve contributed to skyrocketing rents and housing prices. But Facebook’s employee survey suggests that at least some of its employees would leave the San Francisco Bay Area if given the option.

For companies that have built their empires on letting people communicate with far-flung friends and colleagues, moving toward remote work is not too hard of a sell. But there are many challenges. Collaboration, spontaneity, face-to-face interactions that aren’t on a scheduled call _ all look different when people are working alone from their homes.

There are also some jobs — in Facebook’s case, the toughest content reviewing that deals with suicides, child abuse and other traumatizing material; sales; building, upgrading and maintaining data centers; lawyers who have to be in court and so on — that can’t be done remotely.

Newer employees, especially recent college grads or those with little experience and lower performers might also fall into this group, Zuckerberg said. At Facebook, the CEO said employees will have to meet certain criteria to be considered for permanent remote work. This includes a level of seniority, strong performance and, naturally, being part of a team that supports remote work.

For now, workers at Facebook, Google, Twitter and elsewhere can work remotely through 2020. At Microsoft, employees can work from home until October. But the company’s work-from-home flexibility has fit with the software giant’s broader effort to capitalize on what CEO Satya Nadella calls a shift to “remote everything.”

“Every organization will increasingly need the ability at a moment’s notice to remote everything from manufacturing to sales, to customer support,” Nadella said this week at the company’s Build developer conference.

The company’s chief technology officer, Kevin Scott, had already been working a lot from home, in part because he is based in Silicon Valley and most of the rest of the leadership team is in Redmond, Washington.

“We are all on this accelerated timeline figuring out how to work from home…. It’s learning the culture and the rhythms of interacting with your colleagues by video conference and doing your work remotely,” he said, speaking not just of Microsoft but workplaces in general. “That is getting so much better so quickly that I don’t think I’m going to be commuting nearly as frequently as I was before.”

TG MLA Seethakka would have been a National star if she’s in BJP

Share

A few days back, in a press meet, KCR asked all his leaders to take care of their respective constituencies and said that this is the time they evolve as heroes from leaders. It is not known how the TRS MLAs and MPs are holding up to their end but this lady MLA is doing selfless service in the areas where no one wants to roam around.

Telangana National Congress MLA, Seethakka was seen helping the people in the tribal areas recently and she was delivering the essential goods to the people in need all by herself. Even in the mainstream media, she has been highlighted with the footage that was telecasted earlier but yet she hadn’t got the recognition she deserves.

On the other side, there are stories that the Telangana Police are causing troubles for her selfless efforts. In Asifabada Mandal’s Ippal Navegam, she was confronted by the Police as they had restricted her entry saying that she couldn’t be allowed into the area that was placed under curfew. By that time, she was carrying essential goods with her.

So, it is quite clear that Congress’ leaders voice in the state has been suppressed and if Seethakka belongs to the party other than Congress, the situation would have been different. Most importantly, the BJP would have made use of this situation to the most but in this situation Seethakka alone fought with the police and asked them where is the friendly policing that KCR promised the state people?

HC revokes suspension of AB Venkateshwar Rao!

In yet another setback to the Andhra Pradesh government, the state high court on Friday revoked the suspension of former state intelligence chief and Director General of Police rank officer A B Venkateshwar Rao.

The high court set aside the order of the Central Administrative Tribunal which upheld the suspension of Venkateshwar Rao. It also ruled that the IPS officer be paid full salary for the period of suspension.

The high court gave the interim orders, acting on a writ petition filed by Rao challenging his suspension by the Jagan Mohan Reddy government.

The YSRC government suspended Rao on February 8 for his alleged irregularities in procurement of security equipment from an Israeli company during the previous Telugu Desam Party regime.

The government alleged that Rao had colluded with an Israeli defence equipment manufacturing firm RT Inflatables Pvt Ltd to illegally award critical Intelligence and surveillance contract to his son Chetan Sai Krishna, who is CEO of Akasam Advanced Systems Pvt Ltd.

The suspended IPS officer moved the Central Administrative Tribunal challenging his suspension on February 13.

He contended that the suspension was politically motivated and was done based on frivolous grounds. But the CAT on March 17, it upheld his suspension.

On March 7, the Union ministry of home affairs also approved the suspension of Venkateshwara Rao. And it was expended for a further period of three months on April 7.

Rao, who was intelligence chief during the Chandrababu Naidu regime, was shifted from the post by the Election Commission of India following complaints from YSR Congress party leaders during the general elections in April 2019. He was later posted as DGP of Anti-Corruption Bureau.

However, after Jagan came to power in May 2019, Rao was attached to the headquarters without being given any posting.

Italy coronavirus death toll could be 19,000 higher than reported

Share

ROME: Italy’s death toll from the novel coronavirus in March and April could be nearly 19,000 higher than the official figure of 32,000, the national social security agency said Thursday.

The Istituto Nazionale della Previdenza Sociale (INPS), the largest social security and welfare institute in Italy, said in a new study that the official death figures were not “reliable”.

Its study showed that 156,429 total deaths were recorded in Italy in March and April, which is 46,909 higher than the average number of fatalities in those months recorded between 2015 and 2019.

But only 27,938 deaths linked to coronavirus were reported during that period by the Civil Protection Agency, whose toll forms the basis of national statistics, the INPS said.

That meant there were 18,971 more deaths than normal during this period, with the vast majority of 18,412 recorded in the coronavirus-ravaged north of the country.

“Given the fact that the number of deaths is quite stable in these times, we can — with necessary caution — attribute a large portion of these deaths during these past two months to the epidemic,” the INPS said.

It added that the increase in deaths was likely not only due to the disease but from people suffering from other illnesses unable to get healthcare due to hospitals being overwhelmed by the coronavirus pandemic.

As of Friday, the pandemic has claimed 32,486 deaths in Italy, of which 26,715 have been in Lombardy alone — Europe’s worst affected region.
