Legendary actress Sridevi earned nationwide recognition with her stellar performances across Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, and Kannada cinema. Over her illustrious career, she amassed immense wealth and assets. After marrying producer Boney Kapoor, the couple was blessed with two daughters. Sadly, Sridevi passed away in 2018 in Dubai, where she accidentally drowned in a bathtub while attending a family wedding.

Now, years after her demise, a dispute has emerged over one of the properties Sridevi purchased. Boney Kapoor has approached the Madras High Court, alleging that three individuals are falsely claiming ownership of the actress’s estate in Chennai.

According to Boney Kapoor’s petition, in 1988 Sridevi purchased a property on East Coast Road, Chennai, from M.C. Sambandha Mudaliar. At the time, Mudaliar already had three sons and two daughters. Recently, three men stepped forward, asserting that they are the sons of Mudaliar’s second wife and therefore have a share in the property. They also obtained a legal heirship certificate from the Tambaram Tahsildar, which Boney Kapoor claims is fraudulent.

Boney filed the case on April 22, 2025, requesting the court to cancel the heirship certificate. Hearing the matter, Justice N. Anand Venkatesh directed the Tambaram Tahsildar to review the issue and deliver a decision within four weeks.

The court also observed a key legal conflict: Mudaliar’s first wife reportedly passed away in 1999, while his alleged second marriage took place in 1975. Under Hindu succession law, a second marriage during the lifetime of the first wife is invalid. Therefore, the children from such a union cannot be considered Class 1 or Class 2 legal heirs.

The matter is now under review, and the final clarity on Sridevi’s property ownership will depend on the Tahsildar’s decision in the coming weeks.
