The Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the ruling Awami League, has launched a strong condemnation of the interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, accusing it of dismantling democratic institutions and fostering a climate of political repression and violence.
In a sharply worded statement, the student organization claimed that Bangladesh has effectively turned into a “graveyard of democracy” under the current regime. The BCL alleged that remnants of anti-liberation forces—namely Jamaat-Shibir, fundamentalist-communal groups, and militant factions—have been emboldened under Yunus’s leadership, continuing what it described as a “spree of killings, attacks, and terror” since July-August 2024.
“Democratic norms, rule of law, freedom of speech, and voting rights are now on life support,” the statement read. “By exploiting public sentiment and the ideals of justice, these forces infiltrated democratic spaces, incited violence, and took the nation’s legal and political structures hostage.”
The Chhatra League particularly condemned the events of August 5, 2024, referring to the day as a “dark chapter” marked by orchestrated violence against students, civilians, and law enforcement. The group claimed there was an attempt to assassinate Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and described the day as a “massacre of democracy.”
Further criticizing the interim administration, the BCL accused the Yunus-led government of establishing a “jungle law” by allegedly granting indemnity to violent actors and providing “state protection to terrorist-militant forces.”
“The killers of democracy and innocent citizens now occupy the seats of power,” the statement continued. “The air is heavy with grief, and the people of Bangladesh are suffocating under a regime of fear and repression.”
The BCL concluded with a call to action, pledging to restore democratic values, rule of law, and justice for the victims. Declaring August 5 as “Democracy, Student-People-Police Killing Day,” the organization extended condolences to the deceased and expressed solidarity with the injured, calling them a source of collective strength and inspiration.
