Anirudh Charged a Bomb for Gang Leader!
Natural star Nani’s latest film “Gang Leader,” now running in theaters, has got mixed reviews from the critics.
Though the film opened to decent openings on the first day and got some positive reviews, what let the movie down was the music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The songs have not helped the movie at all.
Anirudh, the young musical sensation generally gives catchy tunes to the Tamil movies, but he has not made a mark in Tollywood yet. None of his musical albums was a rage in Telugu so far.
Yet, he is charging huge remuneration from producers. Reliable sources have revealed to us that Anirudh was paid a remuneration of a whopping Rs 3 crore for Nani’s Gang Leader.
It is learnt the producers raised their objections in hiring Anirudh for the movie, as he was charging huge amount, but Nani insisted on taking him.
Apparently, Nani was very much impressed with the music given by Anirudh for his previous movie “Jersey.”
However, a comedy film like “Gang Leader” needed mass-oriented catchy numbers. And Anirudh has failed to provide such a kind of music to the film, despite taking such a hefty remuneration.
TRS planned Nallamala stir against BJP?
The ongoing agitation against proposed mining of Uranium in Nallamala forests and the overwhelming response from Telugu film industry is believed to be a well-planned strategy by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi to corner the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government at the Centre.
Particularly, the way the film stars of Tollywood took up the cudgels against Uranium mining in the Nallamala forests and launched “Save Nallamala” campaign has raised many eyebrows.
First of all, there were no instances in the past in which the film stars have taken up such a massive campaign on any major environmental issue in such a big way – launching an online campaign and signing petitions etc.
Of course, we have seen celebrities reacting to campaigns like “plant a tree,” “ice bucket challenge,” “rice bucket challenge” and “bucket water challenge,” etc.
Secondly, there is no possibility of the film personalities launching a campaign to embarrass the Telangana government headed by K Chandrasekhar Rao and dominated by his son K T Rama Rao, since going by the entire episode, it appeared that the campaign was against the permission being given by the Telangana forest department for the Uranium mining.
In fact, it was the decision of the Centre – Uranium Corporation of India Ltd and Atomic Minerals Division of Department of Atomic Energy to be precise – to take up Uranium exploration in Nallamala forests. So, the state government has little role in it, except giving an approval through forest department.
The film industry started reacting wildly only after director Shekhar Kammula tweeted the issue three weeks ago and it has gone viral.
Generally, film personalities do not react to such issues so strongly, but it appeared there was a big plan behind them to take it up as a campaign.
Finally, the issue culminated in the statement made by KCR that there was no question of giving any forest permission to Uranium mining and said if the Centre forcibly entered the forests, he would launch a big fight.
Apparently, the entire agitation by film stars was stage-managed by the TRS to target the Centre and corner the BJP which was emerging as an alternative to the TRS in the state. Since it directly opposes the Uranium mining, it might create troubles with the Centre.
So, it sought to build up a public opinion, especially from the film industry, against the Uranium mining, so that the TRS can get the required political mileage.
US Wknd BO: Impressive Haul for Gang Leader
“Nani’s Gang Leader” that featured Nani and five other leading women in the prime roles withered mixed reviews to post good numbers at the USA box-office in its opening weekend.
The crime comedy directed by Vikram Kumar went past $100 mark on Sunday to take its total weekend gross to $700k plus.
This is an impressive amount for a Nani starrer. The first weekend gross of “Jersey” that won glowing reviews was $913k.

Nani is one of the most bankable stars in the overseas market. His six movies that grossed more than $1 million in the USA.
Given this track record, this is no surprise that “Gang Leader” took in such a good opening.
Moreover, the USA market is going through a phase of transition and it didn’t receive unanimously positive reviews. Amidst all these constraints, Nani’s movie has posted such impressive numbers.
Directed by Vikram Kumar, “Nani’s Gang Leader” is produced by Mythri Movie Makers. It introduced new girl Priyanka Mohan as the heroine.
Top 5: A Decent First Weekend For Nani’s Gang Leader
1) Gang Leader: Nani’s Gang Leader had a steady first weekend at the box office as the buyers recovered nearly half their investment. However, it has to maintain the good hold in week days to get closer to breakeven mark.
Nani’s following in families has come in handy for Gang Leader helping it to post decent collections in its first weekend.
2) Pahilwaan: Kannada Star hero Sudeep’s masala action film with wrestling backdrop couldn’t grab the attention of Telugu audience.
It has put up a mediocre show at the box office in its first weekend. Sudeep’s familiarity with Telugu audience didn’t help much.
3) Saaho: The film has become one of the highest grossing movies in Telugu Cinema history, but it wasn’t enough because of the high costs involved. Saaho will go down as one of the costliest failures in the history of TFI.
4) Dream Girl: Ayushman Khurana continues to run riot at Hindi box office as Dream Girl. The film has raked in nearly Rs. 45 Cr nett in its opening weekend and is set to become one of the highest grossing films in the actor’s career.
Dream Girl didn’t get glowing reviews like Ayushman’s previous films, but the hilarious comedy scenes are getting the approval of general public.
5) Marshal: Veteran actor Srikanth’s Marshal has gone unnoticed because of low key promotions and the lead actor’s dwindling popularity.
Saaho: No big loss for producers!
It has been 17 days since actor Prabhas’ much-awaited flm “Saaho” hit the silver screen.
Despite the mixed response from the audiences and not-so-encouraging reviews from critics, the Rs 300 crore action-thriller has almost recovered its expenditure as the third week is coming to a close.
Though “Saaho” has still been running in the theaters, the collections are nearly negligible and in some areas, it is said to be running in deficit.
So, what is the final status of “Saaho”? How much the producers are going to lose?
Contrary to the perception, the producers of “Saaho” are not going to lose heavily on this project. “Saaho” was released in Telugu states on the advance basis in most areas and other territories, the film was sold for a good amount.
The Hindi version has already been declared a hit. With “Saaho”, Prabhas has cemented his position in the North Indian market and it is a huge gain for him.
The film brought heavy losses to the Tamil and Malayalam producers as well as the Karnataka distributor. But producers will not be paying them to offset the losses as per the agreement prior release.
The overseas rights of “Saaho” were bagged by a Dubai-based company for a whopping Rs 43 crore. It sold the film in various territories like the USA, Australia, and Europe to different distributors.
Only in the USA, the film has seen losses but in Australia, the distributor has made some profits. The overall overseas collection is put together at about US $ 8 million. This also eases off pressure on the producers are the losses here are nominal.
Coming to the Telugu states, the film was released with the valuation of Rs 120 crore on an advance basis. It collected a share of Rs 80 crore plus, despite so many negative reviews and bad talk through word-of-mouth. The advance taken will be returned to the distributors.
Since the makers have closed stunning non-theatrical deals like digital, audio and satellite, they are in a comfortable position to return to the advance amount. So, they will not face any problems from the distributors.
Overall, “Saaho” didn’t become a headache for the producers as anticipated on the day of the release. It still is a flop in Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam but also stood as one of the all-time top grosser in general.
Thanks to Prabhas’s craze, the producers have escaped from a major embarrassment this time but they have to take extra care about the script of Prabhas’s next film that is already under production to escape from the wrath of the audiences. The ‘Baahubali’ craze will not last forever.
Rjy: 7 dead, 30 missing after boat capsizes in Godavari
In yet another major tragedy, a boat carrying over 50 tourists and 11 crew members capsized near Kachhuluru in Devipatnam on the banks of the Godavari River on Sunday afternoon. The tourists were en route to the popular tourist destination Papikondalu from the Gandipochamma temple.
Andhra Pradesh Tourism Minister M Srinivasa Rao said that at least 50 to 60 passengers were on board the boat which is operated by Punnami Tourism, a Rajahmundry-based private agency. The minister also said that an inquiry has been ordered to nab the culprits for running the boat services even after the government prohibited the boat tours in the swollen up river due to the incessant rains.
Two teams of NDRF have been employed to carry out the rescue operations. So far, 7 bodies have been fished out from the water, and the victims were found to be not wearing life jackets. 23 tourists have been rescued so far.
Gang Leader Result: Valmiki Has An Advantage?
We have seen ‘Gang Leader’ opening in theatres yesterday with above-average ratings and footfalls. As box office is going through a lull period post the disastrous show of Saaho, surely many expected that Nani will cash on the gap and explore it big time. But it looks like he has limited himself to certain quarters.
As the film Gang Leader lacks any massy elements including that of some romantic scenes, songs, and any heroism-flaunting fights, surely the film gets limited to A-centres in the days to come. That too, it will have only class audiences embracing it if trade pundits are anything to go by. That gives an umpteen advantage to next Friday releasing film ‘Valmiki’.
Carved by Harish Shankar, this film has Varun Tej in the lead and deals with the story of a thug who gets fascinated with the idea of making a biopic of himself. Going by the songs and teasers of the film, it looks like the film caters to the mass centres big time as typical comedy scenes and masala sequences are filled to the brim inside.
