The formation of “socially inclusive” cabinet by YSR Congress party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy might have received a lot of appreciation from various quarters, but it is understood to have caused a lot of heartburn among senior party leaders.
On Wednesday, former minister and senior party MLA Kolusu Parthasarathy, who was one of the strong aspirants for the cabinet berth, refused to accept the party whip post in the assembly.
He is understood to have conveyed to the chief minister that the whip post was not a recognition to the services he had been rendering to the party for the last five years.
As a result, Jagan was forced to appoint three others as party whips – Samineni Udaya Bhanu, Kapu Ramachandra Reddy and Pinnelli Ramakrishna Reddy.
All of them expected berths in the Jagan cabinet but were not successful. They were also sulking for quite some time, but the chief minister tried to pacify them by appointing them as whips.
While Jagan has already tried to pacify firebrand MLA R K Roja by promising her a plum post in lieu of the cabinet berth, there were other seniors like Alla Ramakrishna Reddy and Malladi Vishnu who are said to still upset with being denied the minister posts.
“They would get suitable positions with cabinet rank in the coming days,” a party leader said.
The strange behaviour of Telugu Desam Party MP from Vijayawada Kesineni Nani for the last one week is causing flutters in the party, as nobody is able to understand what is in his mind.
After creating ripples in the party by rejecting the post of party whip in Lok Sabha, Kesineni met party president and leader of opposition in Andhra Pradesh assembly N Chandrababu Naidu in the evening and clarified his stand. Despite repeated assurances given by Naidu, the MP did not relent.
Though he made it clear that he was not going to quit the TDP and that there was no question of joining the Bharatiya Janata Party as being speculated in the social media, his strange behaviour by posting controversial comments on his Facebook page continued to baffle the party leaders.
On Wednesday morning, Kesineni posted yet another comment in Telugu saying he believed in his own efforts and was not dependant on anybody’s mercy and support.
“I am a man of sincerity and integrity and only clean image and public service are my qualities,” he said.
Stating that he would call a spade a spade, Kesineni said: “I always point out what is truth, what is false, what is right, what is wrong, what is just and what is unjust. I had introduced the no-confidence motion in Lok Sabha to highlight the injustice meted out to the state. I was the one who pulled up Modi in the House”.
Kesineni claimed that fear was never in his blood and he would never think of what was in store for him in future.
“I don’t care even if anybody tries to draw any extreme and wild conclusions from my words,” he asserted.
In an earlier FB post, Kesineni even quoted poet Sri Sri’s slogan that there was nothing to lose, except chains of slavery if one continued one’s fight. He even complimented YSRC ministers Kodali Nani and Vellampalli Srinivas.
Nobody is able to understand whom Kesineni was referring to and why he was making such strange statements. May be he will come out on his own one day or the other.
With 22 MP seats, YSR Congress party headed by chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is now the fourth largest opposition party in Lok Sabha – only after the Congress, the DMK and the Trinamul Congress.
Of these four parties, the Congress, DMK and Trinamul Congress are the bitter rivals of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and only YSR Congress party is closer to the BJP, though technically it is not part of the National Democratic Alliance.
Naturally, YSRC’s enjoys tremendous clout in Delhi. It can get whatever it wants from Delhi bosses.
Right now, the YSRC is looking for a spacious office for its parliamentary party in parliament, since it has a big number of 23 MPs, besides two Rajya Sabha members.
According to reports that appeared in a section of national media, YSRC is understood to have asked the BJP government to allot the office earlier allotted to the Telugu Desam Party in the previous term.
During 2014-19, the TDP had 17 MPs including two defected MPs, besides five Rajya Sabha members. So, it was given a spacious office for its parliamentary party. Now, the TDP has won just three MPs, so it doesn’t need a big office in parliament.
YSRC wants to occupy the office allotted to the TDP. It is learnt Jagan has already spoken to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi about his desire to acquire the space.
In all probability, the YSRC, which has 22 seats, may get the TDP office located on the ground floor.
As per protocol, it is the Lok Sabha Speaker who allots the offices to political parties on Parliament premises.
Once elected, the Speaker will have to take a call on which party gets which office.
Till the other day, Telangana Rashtra Samithi president and chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao used to claim that his government has become a role model for the entire country and all the states are looking up to Telangana to replicate its model on welfare and developmental programmes.
However, on seeing the decisions taken by his Andhra Pradesh counterpart and YSR Congress party president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, analysts say KCR is definitely under pressure.Jagan has already claimed that he would establish a system which would attract the attention of the entire country.
Some of the decisions taken by Jagan at his very first cabinet meeting has made KCR sit up and think.
For example, his decision to merge AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has definitely created some sort of trouble in the KCR government.
The Telangana RTC employees have been demanding for quite some time that the corporation be merged with the government and they be treated as the government employees.
Once the RTC is merged with the government, as its losses will be transferred to the government along with its assets.
With Jagan taking a decision on the same, the Telangana employees are also gearing up to revive their demand for merger of the RTC with the government.
Secondly, Jagan’s announcement of 27 per cent interim relief to the government employees pending pay revision has also brought pressure on the KCR government.
The TRS chief, who made a promise before the December 7 assembly elections, has not made any attempt to declare IR for the employees.
Thirdly, the YSRC government’s decision to scrap the contributory pension scheme (CPS) for the government employees is also another issue that pushed the KCR government to a corner.
The TRS president also made a similar assurance, but has not taken any decision on it so far.
The other decisions like Amma Vodi, interest waiver on crop loans etc will also found their echo in the Telangana government, say analysts.
Amaravati: Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson G.V.L. Narasimha Rao on Tuesday called on Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy but made it clear that he has no information if the post of Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha was offered to YSR Congress Party.
The BJP MP told reporters after meeting Jagan Reddy at the latter’s official residence that it was a courtesy call and that they did not discuss politics.
Narasimha Rao said he did not know as to which party would be offered Deputy Speaker’s post. He said this would be decided by the BJP leadership.
The BJP leader said he did not know if the post was or will be offered to YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) led by Jagan Reddy.
His reaction was sought on reports that as both the Congress and DMK declined the offer of Deputy Speaker’s post, YSRCP, the third biggest opposition party, would be offered the post.
YSRCP, which stormed to power in Andhra Pradesh with a landslide majority, also won 22 out of 25 Lok Sabha seats in the state.
Narasimha Rao, who felicitated Jagan Reddy with a ‘shawl’, said he congratulated him on certain decisions taken by him after assuming the office. He said they discussed the issues related to the development of the state.
