Renuka Chowdary Wins Over TRS Candidate

Share

Congress firebrand leader Renuka Chowdary’s victory in the HMT staff elections has stunned the ruling TRS party. Renuka defeated Quthubullapur TRS MLA Vivekananda and is going to be the new chairman of HMT staff union.

There were a total of 151 votes and 141 members have cast their vote. Renuka Chowdary got 79 votes while Vivek received 65 votes. With a difference of 14 votes, Renuka emerged victorious and she will be occupying the chairman position for which TRS B Vinod is representing currently. The results of HMT staff elections were declared on Saturday.

This is for the second time, Renuka will head the HMT staff union. Earlier Rajya Sabha MP V Hanumantha Rao has worked as HMT union president.

MLC elections was a big setback for TRS and now the HMT staff results. Is it the indication of downfall? Let’s wait for the Lok Sabha results.

Radhika has narrow escape in Colombo

Share

Chennai: Noted Indian Tamil actor Radikaa Sarathkumar on Sunday had a providential escape as the bomb in the Cinnamon Grand hotel in Colombo exploded just after she had checked out.

In a tweet, Radikaa said: “OMG bomb blasts in SL, God be with all. I just left Cinnamon Grand hotel and it has been bombed. Can’t believe this. Shocking.”

“The dastardly act of terror unleashed in Colombo is condemnable, our heart goes out to innocent lives lost in the attack,” her husband and actor-politician R. Sarathkumar tweeted.

At least 207 people were killed and 469 injured when eight suicide bombings struck luxury hotels and churches across Sri Lanka, mainly in Colombo, on Easter Sunday in the island’s bloodiest day since the civil war ended a decade ago.

According to the complainant, Prashanthi and five others didn’t allow him to watch the match between Sun Risers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders. They also abused and threatened him.

“We have registered a case under section 341, 188 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and further investigation in the matter is underway,” the police said.

Top 5: Jersey Solid, But Faces Stiff Competition From Kanchana

Share

1) Jersey: Jersey has opened glowing reviews and wonderful word of mouth. It has done very good business in its first weekend all over Telugu states and USA.

However, its business has been affected to an extent by Kanchana 3, which is super sensational in the mass pockets.

Jersey is doing so well in A centers, but it is dominated by Kanchana 3 in B and C centers. Jersey will need to hold its ground in week days as Avengers 4 is arriving on this Friday.

2) Kanchana 3: You may like it or not, but you cannot deny the fact that Kanchana 3 is a success in terms of attracting the masses. The film had a tremendous first weekend especially across single screens and mass pockets.

The film has been turned down by the critics, but that hasn’t dented its performance a bit. It registered housefuls all through the weekend.

3) Chitralahari: Sai Dharam Tej’s Chitralahari has slowed down because of two big new releases. However, it has fetched the much needed hit for the mega hero who suffered a string of flops.

4) Majili: Majili has become the biggest solo earner for Naga Chaitanya. It came at the right time for Chay who had seen a lull in his career post Rarandoi Veduka Chuddam.

We have to see whether he can consolidate his market and be consistent in achieving Rs. 30 crore share.

5) Kalank: The high budget mega Bollywood film Kalank turned out to be a dud in spite of heavy pre release buzz.

It has been one of the rare failures among Bollywood biggies this year.

Rajasekhar’s Kalki Sold Like A Hot Cake!

Share

Dr. Rajasekhar has finally decoded the box office puzzle with Garuda Vega. He realized that his films need to be innovative and different from the rest to get noticed.

He patiently waited for another good script post Garuda Vega and has taken up Kalki with director Prashanth Varma who made an impressive debut with Awe.

Kalki has been attracting eyeballs right from its first poster and the recently released teaser has set high expectations on it.

The film looks to have the potential to be a box office winner which is why it is receiving multiple offers from various corners.

Tamil actor Dhanush has reportedly shown interest to get the all India theatrical rights of Kalki, but the makers have sold the theatrical rights to producer Radha Mohan.

He offered Rs. 12 crore for worldwide theatrical rights of Kalki, which is a huge amount considering Rajasekhar’s market.

Producers C. Kalyan and Rajasekhar are happy with the amount offered by Radha Mohan and sealed the deal.

Although the budget of Kalki is way more than Rs. 12 crore, the makers are sure to fetch handsome offers from non theatrical avenues.

Dhoni did what he does best, gave us a scare: Kohli

Share

Bengaluru: M.S. Dhoni did what he does best and almost pulled off a miraculous run-chase, prompting Virat Kohli to go through a lot of emotions as Royal Challengers Bangalore beat Chennai Super Kings by one run.

CSK skipper Dhoni’s scintillating 48-ball unbeaten 84 went in vain as his side failed to cross the line by just one run in a edge-of-the-seat contest against RCB at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Sunday night.

Chasing a modest 162, CSK were reduced to 28/4 before Dhoni forged a crucial 59-run partnership with Ambati Rayudu and then kept the game alive with some lusty blows enroute another half-century.A

The former India captain kept his side in the hunt by hitting Saini for 10 runs before clobbering Umesh for 24 runs in the final five deliveries as it looked like Chennai will once again clinch a last-ball thriller.

However, Dhoni failed to collect the much-needed two runs off the final delivery as Bangalore kept their play-off hopes alive, winning their third game out of the 10 matches they have played so far.

“A whole lot of emotion. We were outstanding with the ball until the 19th over mark. Defending 160 on that sort of pitch and the amount of dew we had was an outstanding effort. On the last ball, that was the last thing I would’ve expected to happen. Feels good to win a game by a small margin. We’ve lost a couple by small margins. MS did what he does best and he gave us all a massive scare,” Kohli said after the game.

“In the first six overs, we thought the ball wasn’t coming onto the bat that much. Parthiv (Patel) and AB (de Villiers) started to rebuild. At the halfway mark we thought 175 would’ve been a very good total on this pitch. We thought we were 15 short,” Kohli opined.

Patel’s (53 off 37) half-century followed by Moeen Ali’s quick 16-ball 26 propelled Bangalore to 161/7.

Kohli said their bowlers pitched the ball in the right areas and that eventually paid off.

“We thought their bowlers didn’t make us play enough on the front foot. And if we pitch the ball in the right areas enough, we’ll get wickets in the powerplay which proved to be the case.”

Chennai were off to the worst possible start as they lost opener Shane Watson (5) and Suresh Raina (0) with just six runs on board, thanks to pacer Dale Steyn’s blows on successive deliveries in the very first over.

Steyn was at his lethal best, returning figures of 2/29. RCB kept their slim chances of making the playoffs alive with the win and next take on Kings XI Punjab next on April 24.

US Wknd BO: Jersey Scores Fantastic Figure

Share

Nani starrer “Jersey” is just short of one million dollars at USA box-office. The movie grossed nearly 900k dollars in its first weekend.

“Jersey” won great reviews from all critics. Celebrities too had heaped praised on the film.

#Jersey Premiere: $143,632 Fri: 260,984 Sat: $318,892 Sun: $180k (apprx) Total Weekend Gross: $903k (apprx)

Since Nani’s previous movies didn’t like by the audiences much and the buzz around the film was low before release, “Jersey” suffered in terms of openings. Or it would have crossed $1 million mark by now.

How this film performs in the weekdays and next weekend will decide its overall gross.

On the other hand, the Tamil version of “Kanchana 3” has no much takers in USA. Naga Chaitanya’s “Majili” almost ended its run at USA box-office.

It is a hit for him but he is still have to wait for another film to score a million dollar movie.

‘Anarkali’ jibe of Azam’s son irks Jaya Prada

Share

Lucknow: As campaigning ended in Rampur on Sunday evening, another salvo was fired at Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Jaya Prada from the Azam Khan camp.

Azam Khan’s son, Abdullah Azan Khan, in a meeting held in Pan Dareba said: “Ali bhi humare, Bajrangbali bhi humare. Humein Ali bhi chahiye, bajrangbali bhi chahiye lekin Anarkali nahi chahiye.” (Ali is ours and so is Bajrangbali. We want Ali and Bajrangbali but we do not want Anarkali).

The reference of Anarkali was obviously to Jaya Prada who is known for her dancing skills in films.

Jaya Prada has asked the Election Commission to take note of the derogatory jibe without delay.

The Azam Khan (SP) – Jaya Prada (BJP) hostility has already acquired legendary proportions and both the leaders do not spare any opportunity to strike at each other.

A case has also been registered against Jaya Prada after she told a gathering in Rampur that the way Azam Khan was commenting on her, the “BSP chief can imagine what all he will be looking at with his X-Ray vision if she comes along with him.”

The Election Commission had earlier cracked down on Azam Khan and barred him from campaigning for 72 hours after his derogatory comments against the actor.

The Election Commission had also pulled up Mayawati and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for their controversial speeches.

The EC, in its order, said it was convinced that both the leaders “made highly provocative speeches which has the tone and tenor to aggravate existing differences or create mutual hatred between different religious communities”.

In Modi vs all election, can you spot Rahul?

Share

The Great Indian Election circus has just begun.

So far, we have seen two phases of the elections in different states. The Big Bang of the election is Prime Minister Narendra Modi. For the opposition, he is the main agenda, how does one oust him in order to get the throne in South Block back. For the ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the issue is also Modi. He remains the brand equity of the party.

The Sangh Parivar votebank argues that Modi is the victim. Lutyens’ Delhi doesn’t like him, as he isn’t elitist. Modi wants to break away from the status quo of Delhi’s ancient political corruption. The BJP clientele remains active in supporting him. It is Modi around whom the main polarisation is taking place. The so-called Left Liberal public intellectual, and the secular civil society remain highly intolerant regarding the intolerance of the Modi-era. On the other hand, the BJP thinks that in all the seats in the country, where the BJP is contesting, it is Modi who is contesting.

In Indian politics, this extreme either-or situation has ironically happened only in the last few decades. That is, with Mrs Indira Gandhi. The Congress campaigned for her, with their slogan of ‘garibi hatao’ and it was the Left which was the demon. This ademonology’, this politics of aothering’, isn’t new in India. It is like the pendulum of an old clock. It swings to one extreme, before moving to the other. It was anti-Congressism in 1967, reaching its extreme in 1989. Then, the BJP took the Congress space and the anti-BJPism started in full swing when Vajpayee was the PM.

The Modi-era is a new phenomenon. The idea: a strong leader, with strong Hindu nationalism to back him, supported by a strong economy. In spite of all discontent, one has to accept that the economic conditions appear favourable to rapid growth in the country. The market has sensed it today, signs of upward movement in the market are there and the scene of market inflow seems positive.

It remains a fact that while travelling in different villages in the country, several of Modi government’s schemes – Swacch Bharat, LPG supply to rural areas, housing programmes, Modi’s health care programme, the opening of Jan Dhan accounts – have all had a positive impact on the lives of the poor. These aren’t very exciting hot potatoes for us in the media – but the actual beneficiaries might have a different reaction.

Sitting in Delhi, this, is something we might forget and fail to understand.

But it is also true that there is a strong sense of discontent in the urban populace over job creation. Price rise and unemployment have, like always, been the opposition’s weapons. Jawaharlal Nehru would write letters to all his chief ministers, from the early days of 1947 till the last day in office in 1964, that ’employment, poverty alleviation, price rise’ were the main challenges of the country. Over 70 years later, we are still fighting the issue and no one has figured out where the magic lantern remains hidden.

The anti-Pakistan Balakot strike did change the election narrative. Modi and BJP were aggressive on national security and on Hindu nationalism. The opposition became defensive. Rahul Gandhi’s Rafael issue became a non-starter. But after two phases of elections in Delhi, a lot of people asked me, “Is there a change in milieu? Is the nationalism plank down? Imran Khan said Modi should come to power, so they can start the dialogue. Did that spoil the BJP’s anti-Pakistan stand.”

Be that as it may, I think that in these elections it remains Advantage-Modi. There is no tsunami in favour of Modi, like what we’ve seen in 2014. But after completing two phases of elections, the unanswered question is still there: What is the alternative?

Rahul Gandhi got the opportunity and he started well. The 2014 perception of him was very different from earlier, when the BJP had campaigned successfully against him, rendering him a ‘pappu’. I took Rahul Gandhi’s interview in 2014 for Anandabazar Patrika. I found him to be intelligent and a thorough gentleman. Even he told me that he was fighting against a hologram created by Modi and the BJP. He was the general of the party, so he didn’t admit, but my impression through the conversation remained that he understood the situation and the fate of the 2014 polls before the results were announced.

This time he has been more serious, more deliberate. His interactions abroad also got him momentum. His image was calibrated away from what was, to a more serious general of a party. But then again, he has fallen into the old trap.

His main mistake was to not form an opposition-front before the election. Mamata Banerjee’s proposal was to form a loose federation. At the time, Rahul Gandhi ignored not just Mamata, but also Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. Congress thought that the ‘Aklo Cholo (Go alone)’ policy’ would be more useful than a compromise formula with regional forces. Rahul Gandhi thought that an alliance with regional parties would be a liability. Congress may get more seats in the country if they don’t go for a new Federal Front like UPA III. Actually, this overconfidence of Rahul Gandhi will spoil the opposition unity index further. He got into an alliance with N. Chandrababu Naidu in Telangana, but this became counterproductive – its impact stretching to Andhra Pradesh.

The victories in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh assembly elections disturbed Rahul Gandhi’s long term strategy for 2019. In the Hindi-heartland, the Congress is in a sorry state: it is a poor No. 4. Ask Mayawati – the Congress is untouchable. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra landed with a message of sibling solidarity, but ask the local Congress worker, it is too little too late.

It is clear that in this election, it is not just Mamata-Mayawati-Akhilesh Yadav or even Tejashwi Yadav who are fighting against Narendra Modi. These regional leaders are giving it their all.

But where is the Congress? Where is Rahul Gandhi?
