Tamil cinema opens doors to transgender characters

Share

Chennai: There was a general perception that Tamil cinema wasn’t too kind to transgednders – but not any more. It is heartening to finally see some Tamil filmmakers portraying transgender characters with dignity. The industry may still be a while from signing transgender actors in key roles, but the change is slowly happening.

In Vijay Antony’s Tamil action-drama “Thimiru Pudichavan”, director Ganeshaa created a transgender character played by Sindhu, a transgender actress, for his police tale. Sindhu plays a police constable In the film.

“The idea was to create employability for transgender people. We hear stories of people from this community shining across professions. Why not give them opportunities in cinema? Sindhu’s character was inspired by Tamil Nadu’s first transgender policewoman, Prithika Yashini,” Ganeshaa told IANS, adding that he received immense support from his hero.

“When I pitched the idea of roping in Sindhu to play this character to Vijay Antony, I expected some kind of opposition. But he was quite encouraging and he had no qualms to share screen space with Sindhu. I’m not sure how many heroes will be open to the idea,” he said.

Talking about the experience of being a part of the project, Sindhu said she will always be indebted to her director and hero.

“It was very gratifying to see myself in the role of a police constable. In real life, we don’t get to be anyone else but this role gave me an identity. I was treated with respect on the sets and never faced any kind of discrimination. I’m really thankful to my director and hero,” she said.

In Mammootty-starrer “Peranbu”, Anjali Ameer, a transgender actress from Kerala played a very crucial role.

In a promotional interview days after the release of the film, Anjali said that through her character Meera, people saw the transgender community in a new light.

Actress Anjali, who worked with Anjali Ameer in the film, told IANS that she found her to be really strong from within.

“I didn’t have scenes with her but I saw her working on the sets. I’m really proud of what she has achieved. In ‘Naadodigal 2’, I worked with another transgender actor and what I find inspiring about them is that they are really strong from inside. They work with so much passion and nothing can affect their inner strength,” Anjali told IANS, and said that their love is pure and is more than what we can imagine.

Director Ram said that when he was on the lookout for a transwoman for the role, it was Mammootty who suggested Anjali Ameer’s name.

“Mammootty sir had met Anjali on a television programme. When I told him the story requires such a character, he immediately suggested Anjali Ameer’s name. When more filmmakers and actors are open to the idea of working with people from the transgender community, the change will automatically happen,” Ram said.

In the recently released Tamil film “Super Deluxe”, actor Vijay Sethupathi plays a transgender character called Shilpa. His performance floored audiences and critics alike.

Talking about the experience of stepping into the shoes of a transwoman, he said that the character helped him overcome his worst fears.

“I found a friend in Shilpa. When I was offered the role, I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off. When I started playing the character, I could get a sense of the world people trans community lives in. The character helped me overcome my worst fears and changed my perspective about life,” Vijay told IANS.

Rarely has ever a mainstream hero played a transgender on-screen. Vijay said he didn’t think too much before accepting the role.

“I saw it as an opportunity to see the world around me through the eyes of a character I’d never get to play again. You don’t get such roles often, and I didn’t want regret missing it later,” he said.

Kavitha, Renuka among key contestants in Telangana

Share

Hyderabad: The Nizamabad seat from where Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao’s daughter K. Kavitha is seeking re-election is set to create history with the largest number of candidates, including 178 farmers, who entered the fray to highlight their problems.

Kavitha, state Congress chief Uttam Kumar Reddy and former union minister Renuka Chowdary are among the prominent candidates for April 11 elections to all 17 Lok Sabha seats from Telangana.

The farmers in the fray, majority of them turmeric and red sorghum, want to highlight the failure of the state and the central governments in assuring them remunerative prices for their produce. The turmeric farmers are also demanding settting up of national turmeric board in Nizamabad.

More than 2.95 crore voters will decide the fortunes of 443 candidates including, 185 candidates in Nizamabad in the single phase polling on Thursday.

The constituency is also set to enter the records book as the Election Commission of India has decided to use 12 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in each polling booth for conducting the polling process.

KCR’s daughter is locked in a three-cornered contest with Congress Secretary Madhu Yaskhi Goud and BJP’s D. Arvind.

According to Chief Electoral Officer Rajat Kumar, the state has 2,95,18,964 voters comprising 1,48,42,619 men, 1,46,74,977 women and 1,368 third gender voters. The number of voters has gone up by over 14 lakh since the Assembly elections held in December 2018.

Buoyed by its landslide victory in Assembly elections, ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is confident of a clean sweep along with its ally All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), whose president Asaduddin Owaisi appears to be on course to win the Hyderabad seat for a fourth term.

Leading the TRS campaign, party president and Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao sought another resounding mandate so that the party can play a key role in formation of next government at the Centre.

KCR, who last year mooted Federal Front as an alternative to BJP and Congress, has been telling every election meeting that the region parties will form non-BJP non-Congress government and bring a qualitative change in the national politics.

“From galli to Dilli, you need your own representatives to safeguard the state’s interests. Those who are gulams (slaves) of Dilli are not expected to do anything for state,” says KCR targeting both the national parties.

A key feature of this election is the absence of Telugu Desam Party (TDP), who for the first time in its history is not contesting Lok Sabha elections in Telangana. As its alliance with the Congress in the recent Assembly elections failed to pay the dividends, TDP decided to stay away from the polls.

YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), which contested 2014 elections, has also opted out. It did not contest the Assembly elections as well.

The Congress, which had bagged 19 seats in 119-member Assembly, looks demoralised with 10 MLAs and several other leaders defecting to TRS during last one month. In the absence of strong candidates to take on TRS, the party had to fall back on the leaders who were defeated in the Assembly elections.

These include party’s state working presidents A. Revanth Reddy and Ponnam Prabhakar, who are contesting from Malkajgiri and Karimnagar constituencies respectively.

In Khammam, Congress senior leader and former union minister Renuka Chowdary is locked in a direct fight against Nama Nageswara Rao, who quit TDP to join TRS and within hours was rewarded with a ticket.

In Secunderabad, the lone seat won by BJP in 2014, its candidate G. Kishan Reddy is locked in a triangular contest with Anjan Kumar Yadav of Congress and T. Sai Kiran Yadav of the TRS.

Khammam, Secunderabad, Nagarkurnool and Nalgonda are the four seats besides Hyderabad which TRS never won since it was floated in 2001 by KCR to revive Telangana movement.

The party is also looking for first victory in Malkajgiri, which came into existence in 2009 following delimitation of constituencies and is the largest constituency in the country with over 31 lakh voters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a couple of election rallies while central ministers Sushma Swaraj, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also campaigned for the party. They targeted KCR for his family rule and alliance with AIMIM. They highlighted the achievements of the BJP-led NDA government during last five years and claimed that the country can be safe and prosper if it retains the power.

For Congress, its president Rahul Gandhi addressed five rallies and a couple of central leaders, including Ghulam Nabi Azad, campaigned for the party, highlighting the promises made in the manifesto, especially the minimum income scheme under which every poor family will get Rs.72,000 annually.

The Congress party pins its hopes on state chief Uttam Kumar Reddy (Nalgonda), Revanth Reddy (Malkajgiri), Renuka Chowdary (Khammam) and a couple of others.

In 2014, TRS had bagged 11 seats while Congress won two. TDP and BJP, which had an alliance, secured a seat each. YSRCP and AIMIM also won a seat each. The MPs of TDP and YSRCP and also one from Congress defected to TRS.

The ruling party also lost one MP on the eve of Assembly elections when Konda Vishweshwar Reddy, elected from Chevella, joined the Congress.

Do The People Need You Pawan?

Share

“Even before his father’s dead body was found, YS Jagan was plotting to become the Chief Minister. Do the people need such a person?” questioned Jana Sena founder Pawan Kalyan.

This is a serious allegation that needs to be addressed. After the funeral of YSR, there was a signature campaign initiated in support of YS Jagan.

Till date though, it is unclear whether it was undertaken at the behest of KVP Ramachandra Rao or YS Jagan’s coterie or someone else.

There are umpteen variations and speculations regarding this episode including some anti-Jagan Congressmen who said that they were unaware of any such signature campaign undertaken at that point in time.

YS Jagan definitely deserves the benefit of doubt. However, it is pertinent to note that it was actually YS Jagan who proposed Rosaiah’s name for interim Chief Minister then.

And why will a person who is hell-bent on becoming Chief Minister at any cost refuse to promise loan waiver for the farmers, later in his electoral campaign? But let us come to the Jana Sena founder himself.

Do the people need a person who is married, yet is unfaithful to his partner and makes another woman pregnant without divorcing his wife? But no, friends, that’s personal, you can’t go there, right?

How much pain must Renu Desai have felt compared to the pain Pawan says he is feeling because of Ali’s betrayal? But according to the Jana Sena Chief, such characteristics make him eligible for Chief Ministership.

Pawan Kalyan also revealed the reason for his anger with the YS family.

“Ravindra Reddy asked me to do a film for him threatening me that he was the brother-in-law of YSR. How is it possible? Can they force me? Will Jagan give me Idupulapaya if I ask for it? Will he give me a share in his assets? If this was the situation in YSR’s time for even a person like me, imagine the state of affairs if Jagan becomes the CM tomorrow. But, if anyone tries to threaten me, I will skin him alive,” thundered Pawan Kalyan.

Very good Pawan Kalyan! But did you eventually do the film or not? What was the outcome of the episode? Surely, if you had a problem with Ravindra Reddy, you could have directly taken up the matter with YSR? What did you do finally?

The very fact that you are able to make public statements against the YS family shows that you are confident that they will not physically assault you in any way. And speaking of law and order, who was the Chief Minister when Paritala Ravi tonsured your head free of cost? Whose regime was it then?

Besides, not a single person from your community barring Vangaveeti Ranga had the guts or daring to respond to the imbecile Balakrishna’s heinous ‘Sankara Jaathi’ comments. But you find absolute freedom in lashing out at the mighty YS family. So, whose is the goonda raj, Pawan?

Anyway, the people of Andhra Pradesh will be free from the nuisance of this person in a few more days as the polling date gets closer.

Despite all claims to the contrary, Pawan Kalyan, you are accorded any kind of respect only for one reason: because you are a peddler of your community’s votes. Period!

After Mahesh Babu, SJ Surya Is Going To Lock Horns With Rajini

Share

SJ Surya is one of the most popular directors and actor in both Telugu and Tamil languages. He has helmed Tollywood movies like Khushi, Nani, etc and his last Telugu directorial is ‘Puli’ starring Pawan Kalyan. He also played cameos in that movies.

Recently, SJ Surya became a villain for Mahesh Babu’s ‘Spyder’ movie directed by AR Murugadoss. Though the movie became a disaster, the actor has been getting so many offers from the industry. He also played the antagonist role in Vijay’s ‘Mersal’ movie. As per the latest reports, the actor has got an interesting offer from Tamil. SJ Surya got an opportunity to play the villain role in South superstar Rajinikanth’s upcoming movie under the direction of AR Murugadoss. On the other hand, rumors are rife that SJ Surya is also going to play a crucial role in Bollywood Big B Amitabh Bachchan’s debut Tamil film.

It is not an easy thing to get an opportunity to share the screen space with Amitabh Bachchan and SJ Surya seems to be super excited about it. He is also playing a villain role in Ajith’s upcoming movie. It seems like the former director wants to settle down as a villain in star hero movies. Isn’t it?

Pawan Turns Emotional On Friendship With Ali

Share

Everyone knows about Pawan Kalyan and comedian Ali’s friendship in the industry. But politics has divided them. Despite this, both Pawan and Ali never criticised or talked about each other. But not all days will be the same and surprisingly it is Pawan Kalyan who opened up for the first time.

The Jana Sena chief campaigned in Rajahmundry on Monday and as he is in the city, he recalled Ali. “Ali has a concern for the society and he always used to say that he wants to do something. So I told him that we would do it together. Ali brought his relative and I offered Narsaraopet Lok Sabha seat but Ali went and joined YSRCP. May be Ali feared that Pawan Kalyan will not win and Jagan will win,” said Pawan and questioned is this friendship.

“How can one gauge that this person will not win the elections. I started my film career in 1996 and nobody expected that I could influence lakhs of people now. I was there when Ali was in troubles and need. I supported him but when most trusted people leave us, I lost the hope. That’s why I don’t believe in people around me and I trust common man because I’m one of them,” added the Jana Sena chief.

These are quite emotional words from Pawan and will definitely create a negative impact on Ali. What will Ali reply on Pawan’s statements or will he defend joining YSRCP? The ball is in Ali’s court.
