Jagan supports RGV, attacks Babu
As reported earlier, AP Police officials on Sunday did not allow filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma to hold a press meet in Vijayawada regarding his film Lakshmi’s NTR, which is slated for release on 1st May in Andhra Pradesh. After detaining the director and movie unit at Gannavaram airport, they were sent back to Hyderabad forcefully to avoid the uninvited situations.
Unsurprisingly, in next few hours, the director has gained support of YSRCP Chief Jagan Mohan Reddy, who already is drawing sharp criticism for being tight-lipped on TRS government over the irregularities in Intermediate board which led to suicides of 21 students so far.
Condemning the incident, Jagan Mohan Reddy issued a statement “Such incidents are a blot on democracy which are deplorable.” On Monday morning, he also dropped a tweet saying : “Our democracy is in such a situation that we cannot hold a press meet in Vijayawada. Our police men are being used like a pawn in this democracy.” He also questioned: “Chandrababu Garu, what wrong did Ram Gopal Varma do?”
Jagan reacting to RGV’s issue in few hours has called for a discussion on social media and some section of netizens are pointing out that “why is Jagan concerned about a movie and a filmmaker who was denied permission for a press meet to only avoid unwanted situation.”

Retired Andhra HC judge booked for dowry harassment
Hyderabad: The daughter-in-law of a retired Andhra High Court judge on Sunday succeeded in getting custody of one of her two daughters, hours after her in-laws and husband were booked by for subjecting her to dowry harassment and domestic violence.
After nearly a day-long protest along with women activists outside the residence of former high court judge Justice Rammohan Rao here, Sindhu Sharma managed to get the custody of her younger daughter, one-and-half-year-old Srividya, with the intervention by police.
The 30-year-old also demanded the custody of her elder daughter. She vowed to continue her protest till the in-laws also hand over three-and-half-year-old Rishika.
Tension prevailed at the retired judge’s residence in posh Jubilee Hills as various women’s groups also joined her in her protest. Holding placards and raising slogans, they demanded justice.
Sindhu alleged that in-laws were refusing to hand over the elder daughter as they fear that she would speak out about the ill-treatment and physical assault.
She told media persons that Rammohan Rao suggested divorce with mutual consent. She, however, made it clear that the police case against them should first come to a conclusion.
She said that if her husband N. Vashista comes forward to live with her, she may give him a chance.
On a complaint by Sindhu, the Central Crime Station of Hyderabad police on Saturday filed a criminal case against Rammohan Rao, his wife Lakshmi and their son Vashista, charging them under sections 498-A (punishment for subjecting a married woman to cruelty), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code and Dowry Prohibition Act.
Sindhu and Vashista had married six years ago and her father M. V. Sharma had given cash and gold as dowry. However, for last few months, her in-laws and husband had been allegedly harassing her for dowry and subjecting her to physical and mental torture.
Last week, she had to be admitted to a hospital after they allegedly thrashed her mercilessly. With the physical assault becoming unbearable, she decided to approach the police.

T teacher sacked for giving ‘0’ marks instead of 99
Hyderabad: Telangana Board of Intermediate, which is at the centre of a row over goof-up in declaring results of Intermediate examination, suspended a teacher and imposed fine on another for giving a student ‘0’ marks instead of ’99’ on Sunday.
A day after three-member committee submitted its report to the government, Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) began action against those found guilty of dereliction of duty.
BIE announced late Sunday that it has imposed Rs. 5,000 fine against Uma Devi, a teacher of a private school who evaluated Telugu paper of Navya, a 12th standard student but instead of giving ’99’ marks gave her ‘0’ marks. Uma Devi has also been sacked by her school management.
BIE also suspended Vijay Kumar, a teacher of a tribal welfare school, who had served as scrutiniser but failed to notice the blunder.
The goof-up by the Board has triggered a spate of suicide by students and protests by parents, student bodies and opposition parties. They are demanding action against the higher-ups in the Board and the Globarena Technologies, an IT company, which was allegedly found guilty of the massive bungling.
Suicide by 20 students and massive protests forced the government to announce free re-verification of answer sheets of over 3 lakh students, who were declared failed in the examination.

T Intermediate Board postpones supplementary exams
Hyderabad: The Telangana Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) has postponed Advanced Supplementary Exams from May 16 to May 25, it was announced on Sunday.
While the Intermediate First Year (Class 11) exam will be held during morning session, Second Year (Class 12) will be held in the afternoon. The exams will continue till June 1.
According to the schedule earlier announced by the BIE, the exams were to begin on May 16. As the re-verification of answer sheets of all failed students and other applicants is likely to take more time, the BIE has postponed the Advanced Supplementary Exams.
A total of 9.74 lakh students appeared in Intermediate First and Second year exams held in February-March. The Board on April 18 announced the exam results.
However, a goof-up by the BIE in declaring the results sparked a huge row and led to suicide by 20 students during last 10 days.
Following an uproar by the students and parents and protest by student bodies and opposition parties, the state government announced free re-verification of answer sheets of 3.28 lakh students who failed to secure pass marks.
Many students who passed the exams but not satisfied with the marks obtained also applied for re-verification of answer sheets.
A three-member committee, formed by the government to probe the goof-up, found that the BIE and Globarena Technologies, the IT firm whose services were hired by the BIE, committed grave mistakes in preparing the results.
Meanwhile, the opposition parties have decided to intensify the protest over the issue from Monday. The Congress, the TDP, the CPI and the TJS have called for ‘chalo Intermediate Board’ to press the demand for judicial probe into goof-up and compensation to families of the students who committed suicide.
BJP’s state unit has demanded judicial probe by a sitting judge of the high court. BJP National General Secretary Muralidhar Rao announced on Sunday that state BJP chief K. Laxman will launch indefinite fast.
Time for the South To Get Its Due From The Centre?
The South states contribute to one-four of India’s GDP that also runs the country. From greater economic progress, employment opportunities, good infrastructure, higher industrialisation, education and human development index to more progress and per capita GDP, the South does it all to run the country.
But, the Centre has always remained unjust to the region. All the Southern states combined contribute more than double to the Centre’s revenues than the Northern States. Development politics and the presence of regional parties in the South is also one of the reasons for such economic progress in the Southern part of India, compared to the Northern belt which is still getting its act together. According to economists, North Indian states get 2.5 times more than what the South gets despite contributing the most to India’s growth.
For instance: While Tamil Nadu gets 40 paise for every rupee it generates for the Centre, Uttar Pradesh gets Rs 1.8 per rupee. One astounding example that shows the injustice meted out to South is the allocation of funds for urban development in Delhi alone by the Centre which was Rs. 20,000 crore in 2016. Meanwhile, this is more than what Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Amaravati, Chennai and Kochi got. Despite all these South Indian cities being top job creators, they have not received the required boost from the Centre.
According to a study quoted by the Hindu Business Line: The simple average per capita income at 2011-12 prices for the five southern States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana was about ₹1,18,070 in 2016-17. In comparison, the per capita income in Uttar Pradesh was about a third of that at ₹38,965 and in Bihar, a little over 20 per cent of the southern average, at ₹25,950. This indicates a stark difference.
While any government at the Centre promises and reiterates the idea of Cooperative Federalism time and again, it hardly implements it when it comes to the Southern States. So, does that mean that the leaders from all Southern States should form a collective and exert pressure on the Centre? May be. But, for starters, all the leaders should first unite and recognise it rather than get into political fights and mudslinging, to demand the South’s rightful share.
