Pompeo on diplomatic tightrope in Saudi talks over Khashoggi murder

Share

Riyadh: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo faced a tough balancing act on Monday as he pressed Saudi Arabia’s crown prince over critic Jamal Khashoggi’s murder while shoring up strategic ties with Riyadh.

The top US diplomat, on an extensive Middle East tour, held talks with King Salman and his son Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, which also focused on the conflict in Yemen and countering threats from Iran.

Pompeo walked a diplomatic tightrope on his second politically sensitive visit to Saudi Arabia since Khashoggi’s murder as he demanded that all those involved in the crime be held accountable. The king and crown prince “both acknowledge that this accountability needs to take place”, Pompeo said in Riyadh following talks with them. “They reiterated their commitment,” he added.

Relations between Riyadh and Washington have remained strained after journalist Khashoggi was murdered on October 2 inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Riyadh said the murder was carried out by “rogue” Saudi agents, but the US Central Intelligence Agency reportedly concluded that Prince Mohammed very likely ordered the hit.

Pompeo’s meeting with the crown prince lasted around 45 minutes. The US diplomat appeared more reserved than his previous visit at the height of the Khashoggi affair, when his broad smiles with the crown prince outraged many Americans. US President Donald Trump has brushed aside critics to stand by Prince Mohammed, who faces international opprobrium over the killing. Riyadh prosecutors have announced indictments against 11 people and are seeking the death penalty against five of them, but they have exonerated Prince Mohammed.

Trump has said Washington wants to preserve the alliance with the oil-rich kingdom, which he sees as a bulwark against common foe Iran and a lucrative buyer of US arms. Furious over the murder, US lawmakers have demanded Washington pull back its support to the Saudi-led military campaign against Houthi rebels in Yemen. But backing the Saudi position, Pompeo accused the rebels of failing to comply with a truce agreement for the lifeline port city of Hodeida reached last month at UN-sponsored talks in Sweden.

“The work that was done in Sweden on Yemen was good, but both sides (need) to honour those commitments,” Pompeo said. “Today, the Iranian-backed Houthis have chosen not to do that.”

Rights groups called on Pompeo to also press Prince Mohammed over the jailing of women activists in the kingdom, amid claims that some of them faced sexual harassment and torture during interrogation. Pompeo on Monday said he discussed human rights issues with the Saudis, including the plight of women activists, without giving any details.

Pompeo was in Riyadh as part of an extensive week-long trip to the Middle East, which included stops in Amman, Baghdad, Cairo, Manama, Abu Dhabi and Doha. After Riyadh, Pompeo wrapped up his Middle East tour with a trip to Muscat, where he held talks with Omani ruler Sultan Qaboos.

Pompeo, however, cancelled a scheduled visit to Kuwait in order to attend a family funeral at home, US officials said. On Sunday, Pompeo met Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani in Doha, where he refused to comment on reports Washington had recently considered military action against Tehran. He also called on Qatar and other Gulf Arab countries to end their worst political rift in years, which has seen Doha diplomatically and economically isolated by neighbouring former allies for the past 19 months.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt — all US allies — cut ties with Qatar in June 2017, accusing it of supporting terrorist groups and seeking closer ties to Saudi arch-rival Iran. Qatar — also a US ally — denies the allegations and accuses the countries of seeking regime change.

“As for the GCC… we are all more powerful when we’re working together when we have common challenges in the region and around the world,” Pompeo said, referring to the six member nations of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

He added that “President Trump and I both believe the ongoing dispute in the region has gone on too long”. Mediation efforts by the United States, which at first appeared to back the boycott of Qatar, have stalled, as highlighted by the recent resignation of US envoy Anthony Zinni.

For Washington, turning the page on the crisis is essential for the successful launch of the Strategic Alliance of the Middle East (MESA), a NATO-style security pact that includes Gulf countries as well as Egypt and Jordan.

PG&E, utility tied to California wildfires, to file for bankruptcy

Share

Los Angeles: Pacific Gas and Electric, the utility company that has been tied to deadly wildfires in California, said Monday it plans to file for bankruptcy at the end of the month.

The San Francisco-based company said its decision to reorganise under Chapter 11 is tied to more than USD 30 billion in claims it is facing over the so-called 2018 Camp Fire in Northern California — the deadliest in the state’s recent history — that left 86 people dead. The utility is also under scrutiny for blazes in 2017 that devastated the wine region in Northern California and left more than 40 people dead.

“The company today provided the 15-day advance notice required by recently enacted California law that it and its wholly owned subsidiary Pacific Gas and Electric Company currently intend to file petitions to reorganize under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code on or about January 29,” a statement said.

It said the bankruptcy filing, which saw shares plunge 48 per cent on Monday, should not affect electric or natural gas service to its 16 million customers in California. PG&E has come under intense scrutiny following the devastating wildfires in California after it emerged that some of its equipment may have sparked the blazes. The bankruptcy announcement came a day after Geisha Williams resigned as CEO of the utility and was replaced on an interim basis by executive vice president and general counsel John Simon.

“The people affected by the devastating Northern California wildfires are our customers, our neighbours and our friends, and we understand the profound impact the fires have had on our communities and the need for PG&E to continue enhancing our wildfire mitigation efforts,” Simon said on Monday.

“We remain committed to helping them through the recovery and rebuilding process,” he added. “We believe a court-supervised process under 2 Chapter 11 will best enable PG&E to resolve its potential liabilities in an orderly, fair and expeditious fashion. We expect this process also will enable PG&E to access the capital and resources we need to continue providing our customers with safe service and investing in our systems and infrastructure.”

Prabhas Fans Feeling Super Happy Now!

Share

Apparently, some rumors are always there even though people call it a rumor. At the same time, though everyone knows that few rumors are just rumors, they still haunt fans of the particular celebrity involved.

And now, as you have expected, fans of ‘Baahubali’ star Prabhas are feeling super happy on this Sankranthi eve. Because from a long time, there was this rumor that Andhra Pradesh opposition leader YS Jagan’s sister Sharmila is in a relationship with superstar Prabhas. With Sharmila herself clearing the air over it, before filing a case on the unknown for painting filthy rumours on her, it led to huge discussions on social media.

Prabhas’ fans are always happy with the rumour that the actor is dating his co-star Anushka, but they are a bit unhappy with rumours linking him up with Sharmila. Now that the daughter of late CM YSR herself gave the clarity, there will be no further worries about such rumours.

On the other hand, Telangana police are now investigating into the matter to find out who is actually spreading this rumour.

Sankranthi Hit Director Defends Heroines’ Dresses

Share

Unlike in his previous films, director Anil Ravipudi who has scored a hit this Sankranthi 2019 with “F2: Fun And Frustration” has increased the dose of glamour too. With milky beauty Tamanna around, of course, we haven’t seen a film that is less of glamour in any way.

Especially in songs like “Girra Girra” and others, the glamour dose poured by Tamanna and Mehreen together is a bit high only. Generally speaking, we don’t see that much of glamour stashed in Dil Raju’s production ventures. So what made Anil Ravipudi coming up with such high dose?

“Yes, I’ve intentionally upped the glamour treat in F2. After watching my previous films, many commented that the glamour portion is not worthy in my movies. So I took a cue from the likes of K Raghavendra Rao and other legends to churn out masala treat”, said Anil Ravipudi, defending the short dresses worn by his heroines.

Seems like Anil is quite excited about the way the film’s result has turned out.

Sekhar Kammula Charges More Than His Movie’s Budget

Share

Director Sekhar Kammula had scored a huge blockbuster with his previous film ‘Fidaa’. Released in 2016, the film collected nearly 40 crore share. A couple of months ago, Sekhar’s latest film had a formal launch. Sunil Narang of Asian Cinemas is foraying into film production with this film.

And here’s an exclusive and exciting update. A source close to the development has informed us that Sekhar is being paid a whopping Rs 7 crore as his remuneration for this film. What’s more shocking is that the film’s entire budget is hardly about Rs 4 crores.

Sekhar’s skyrocketing paycheck is definitely due to the phenomenal success of Fidaa. Although his next film will mostly feature newcomers, Sekhar’s brand image and his track record of delivering blockbusters with youthful entertainers will give it the necessary advantage during the pre-release business and at the box office.

Super sex bomb Sunny Leone is not making much noise on silver screen these days as she got busy with many other projects including her own beauty products line, producing her biopic web series and many. But the actress is making sure that she will not miss out live events.

A couple of years ago, when Sunny was supposed to take place at an event in Bangalore, the event got canceled in the last minute as police said they cannot provide security. Guess what, later when Sunny went to Kerala for a showroom inauguration, the sea of crowds at the event shocked many and felt that police are right.

But now, Sunny is all set to dance at an event in Kochi on the coming Valentines Day (Feb 14). If not a storm or a tsunami, what is this hot lady trying to do Kerala now? While the event got all the needed permissions for the now, what matters is will conservatives allow Sunny to dance on Valentines Day eve?

Well, only time and Kerala have the answer for this!

Janasena could hit YCP Vote-bank

Share

Mahesh Kathi who has been a critic of Pawan Kalyan and his politics has again come up with an analysis about how Jana Sena could hit YSR Congress’ vote bank in the upcoming Andhra Pradesh elections. According to him, there is a lot of negative propaganda against the Telugu Desam Party in the state where it doesn’t have many chances of winning the upcoming Assembly elections.

So, going by his analysis, if Jana Sena contests, the anti-incumbency vote which was earlier going to YSR Congress now will get split between Jana Sena and YSR Congress. On the other hand, if the different in vote share between the winning party and the losing party is less or more, the Jana Sena will split this share. This means, it will eventually benefit the TDP because YSR Congress vote bank gets dented.

”YSRCP and TDP have fixed voters. If there are undecided voters, even if they go with Jagan’s YSR Congress party. Then the anti-government votes, may shift to Jana Sena. For instance: If you consider Godavari districts, Jagan is trying to increase his party’s strength. Last time, TDP won the districts. This time, if Jana Sena, because of Kapu vote bank splits YSRCP’s share, then it will decrease Jagan’s share and benefit TDP,” he explained, in a TV interview.

Teja Having Last Laugh!

Share

NTR Biopic was launched with much fanfare in the direction of Teja in March 2018.

The event was attended by several of Telugu celebrities and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu. However, Teja walked out of the project after a month’s shoot due to differences with Balakrishna.

It was said that Teja was dead against Balakrishna playing the role of young NTR. He wanted either NTR Jr or Sharwanand to essay that part and show Balakrishna in twilight years of NT Rama Rao.

He also suggested Balakrishna to restrict the number of getups and focus more on little-known facets of NT Rama Rao’s life.

Teja and Balakrishna both known for having hyper-mentality didn’t come to an understanding. It led to Krish coming on board as the director in the place of Teja.

Now that “NTR Kathanayakudu”, the first part of NTR Biopic, turned out to be colossal flop, industry people are calling Teja and appreciating that he did right step.

They say his ideas were good rather than Krish’s treatment of NTR’s acting life.
