Duvvada Jagannadham Movie Review – 2.75/5

Share

Allu Arjun’s latest entertainer DJ is out in theaters now. It is a routine commercial flick loaded with commercial elements targeted at the masses. Harish Shankar totally banks upon Allu Arjun’s star power and uses entertainment to make it a passable fare.

Story :

Duvvada Jagannadham (Allu Arjun) is a Brahmin youth who does catering for livelihood. He falls in love with Pooja (Pooja Hegde), a rich girl, who rejects him. There is another side to Duvvada Jagannadham. He cannot sit and watch if someone does injustice in front of him. He teams up with a police officer (Murali Sharma) and eliminates all the criminals that come to his notice. Police identifies him with the name DJ. There is a cold blooded criminal Royyala Naidu (Rao Ramesh), a real estate business tycoon that does injustice to thousands of people. DJ loses one of his close one because of Royyala Naidu’s scam. Now, DJ has to find and eliminate Royyala Naidu who is hiding behind without letting the world know about his true colors.

Performances:

Allu Arjun: Stylish star Allu Arjun does a Brahmin character for the first time in his career and his efforts to get into the skin of the character can be seen. He mastered the dialect and perfected the body language. On the other side, he is extremely stylish and handsome as DJ. He excelled in dances and enthralls the masses with his punch lines.

Pooja Hegde and Others: Pooja has a little role to play in the main plot, but she provided the glam quotient and lit up the screen whenever she comes on it. She could be the next big thing in Telugu cinema industry with right opportunities. Rao Ramesh yet again excels with his Godavari dialect and a getup reminiscent of one of his father’s iconic characters ‘Royyala Naidu’. Murali Sharma is good in the supporting role. Vennela Kishore entertains. Tanikella Bharani, Pavitra Lokesh and Chandra Mohan are apt in their respective roles.

Technicalities:

Direction: Harish Shankar doesn’t try too hard for an exceptional script. He simply likes to play to the galleries and bank upon his hero’s strengths. DJ also is a regular commercial script laced with good humor and action. However, a bad second half doesn’t allow it to rise above the average mark.

Music and Others: Devi Sri Prasad once again comes up with foot tapping musical numbers that give ample scope for Allu Arjun to exhibit his dancing skills. His background score also is pretty good. BGM in the interval episode stands out. Ayananka Bose’s cinematography is another asset on the technical front. Editing is fine. Dialogues written by Harish Shankar are not only witty in comedy scenes but also meaningful in emotional scenes. Production values are very impressive.

Thumbs Up:

  • Allu Arjun
  • Songs
  • Pooja’s glamour

Thumbs Down:

  • Routine script
  • Below average second half

Analysis:

DJ is a typical commercial potboiler that doesn’t rely on a strong script. In fact the story and screenplay are quite ordinary and don’t offer anything fresh from usual stuff. It scores on the entertainment front with Allu Arjun in the driver’s seat.

Harish Shankar never lets the proceedings turn too serious. Duvvada Jagannadham is a character that fights for the society, but it remains grounded and entertains all the while. Even the villain character too is written in such a way that it entertains. Rao Ramesh is an evil minded strategist but also gets into the shoes of a real estate model to offer laughs.

First half of the film is solid with good humor, enjoyable songs, Pooja’s glamour and Allu Arjun in top form. Second half is a complete letdown though. One would expect a splendid confrontation between hero and villain at the intermission point. But the proceedings turn utter predictable as even the comedy takes the back seat until the end.

Director cleverly introduces Subba Raju in the middle of the story and sets it up for a hilarious ending. An unexpected funny twist towards the climax provides scope for comedy so that the viewers can leave the theaters with a smile on their faces. DJ may not offer freshness that a section of audiences look for, but an entertaining first half and Allu Arjun’s performance holds to make it a passable fare on the whole.

Verdict: Sabhya Samajaniki Routine Message.

Google Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 spotted in HTC U11 system files

Share

Google Pixel and Pixel XL flagship phones were built by HTC as part of its two-year contract deal with the search engine giant. However, a recent report suggested that Google would scrap the Pixel XL 2.

Now, the successors to Pixel and Pixel XL are speculated to be built by HTC as the system files of HTC U11 flagship phone have references to S2 and M2. This claim is further strengthened by the fact that Pixel and Pixel XL are denoted by the code names ‘S1’ and ‘M1’ respectively.

According to XDA Developers citing HTCSoku, the M2 listing could be old and the reference placed long before Google decided to drop Pixel XL 2 from its roadmap. Another report suggests that LG is still working on a larger sized Pixel phablet, which is touted to be the successor to Pixel XL.

If the LG theory is true, it is almost certain that HTC will be working on the Google Pixel 2 alone. However, if the LG rumour turns out to be false, then we could be seeing both Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 built by HTC.

Check out the various device codenames that have been allegedly leaked via HTC U11 system files:

  • OCEAN_WHL
  • OCEAN_UL
  • OCEAN_DUGL
  • OCEAN_DTWL
  • OCEAN_UHL
  • OCEAN_UHL_JAPAN
  • OCEAN_A
  • S2
  • M2

We could just wait for Google’s formal announcement on the upcoming Pixel phones in the next few weeks while more leaks are expected to keep us engaged ahead of the launch.

Why Bunny is Not Interested in Top Heroines?

Share

While Allu Arjun is eagerly awaiting the release of DJ, pre-production work of his next film ‘Naa Peru Surya’ is progressing at brisk pace. The names of many actresses are cropping up as potential heroines, and we can observe a refreshing change here.

After considering the likes of emerging Kannada actress Rashmika Mandanna and talented performer Nivetha Thomas (she even took part in a photo shoot), now the name of another rising Malayalam beauty Anu Emmanuel is reportedly under consideration. All of these actresses are talented but not stars yet.

A few years ago, Bunny used to romance only star heroines. The likes of Samantha, Kajal, Shruti Haasan, Rakul Preet, Ileana, Tamannah etc. have all worked with him only after they became stars. This trend of romancing star heroines was broken when Pooja Hegde was brought on board for DJ. Now, lesser popular actresses than Pooja are in contention to romance Bunny in “Naa Peru Surya”.

There could be either of the below mentioned two reasons or both for this change. First, Bunny has already worked with all the top heroines and he will have to repeat them, so he is looking for fresh combinations. Second, Bunny himself has become a huge star now that he doesn’t need the support of top heroines anymore.

Whatever the reason may be, Bunny giving chance to promising actresses will create more star heroines in Tollywood, a win-win situation for all.

Donald Trump, Mohammed bin Salman share hardline views on Iran but risks abound

Share

Saudi Arabia’s new crown prince and likely next king Mohammed bin Salman shares U.S. President Donald Trump’s hawkish view of Iran, but a more confrontational approach toward Tehran carries a risk of escalation in an unstable region, current and former U.S. officials said.

Iran will almost certainly respond to a more aggressive posture by the United States and its chief Sunni Arab ally in battlefields where Riyadh and Tehran are engaged in a regional tussle for influence.

Saudi King Salman made his son Mohammed bin Salman next in line to the throne on June 21, 2017, handing the 31-year-old sweeping powers, in a succession shake-up. Prince Mohammed bin Salman, widely referred to as “MbS,” has ruled out any dialogue with arch rival Iran and pledged to protect his conservative kingdom from what he called Tehran’s efforts to dominate the Muslim world.

In the first meeting between Mr. Trump and MbS at the White House in March 2017, the two leaders noted the importance of “confronting Iran’s destabilising regional activities”. But that could have unintended consequences, said some current and former U.S. administration officials.

The greatest danger for the Trump administration, a longtime U.S. government expert on Middle East affairs said, was for the United States to be dragged deeper into the Sunni-Shia conflict playing out across the Middle East, a danger that could be compounded by Mr. Trump’s delegation of responsibility for military decisions to the Pentagon. If the administration gives U.S. commanders greater authority to respond to Iranian air and naval provocations in the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, things could easily spiral out of control, the official said.

U.S.-backed forces fighting in Syria are also in close proximity with Iranian-backed forces supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. U.S. military jets twice in June 2017 shot down Iranian-made drones threatening U.S. and coalition forces in southeastern Syria. The United States also supports the Saudi-led coalition’s war in Yemen through refuelling, logistics and limited intelligence assistance.

“If we were to witness an incident at sea between an Iranian and a U.S. vessel in the Gulf, at a time of immense distrust and zero communication, how likely is it that the confrontation would be defused rather than exacerbated?” said Rob Malley, vice president for policy at the International Crisis Group. “If there’s a more bellicose attitude towards Iran, Iran is likely to respond,” said Mr. Malley, a former senior adviser on Middle East affairs under President Barack Obama.

Eric Pelofsky, who dealt with Middle East issues at the White House under Mr. Obama, said the administration had “laboured pretty hard to avoid a direct clash between Saudi Arabia and Iran on the high seas”, in part because it would expand the Yemen conflict and there were questions “about what the outcome of such an encounter might be”.

But Luke Coffey, director of the Foreign Policy Centre at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, doubted Iran would retaliate in a major way. “Iran has very limited ability or options to retaliate against U.S. forces in the region without suffering an overwhelming U.S. response,” Mr. Coffey said. “I think Tehran knows this so they will stick to low-level tactics like harassing U.S. ships in the Gulf. This will be just enough to be annoying but not enough to be considered ‘retaliating,’” he added.

Close relationship

MbS was the driving force behind the Saudi-led campaign in Yemen against Iran-allied Houthi rebels, launched in March 2015. He also appears to have orchestrated this month’s breach with neighbour Qatar, which was accused by Riyadh and three other Arab states of cosying up to Iran, funding terrorism or fomenting regional instability. Qatar denies the allegations.

“Theres a danger that his foreign policy instincts, that do tend to be aggressive, especially toward Iran, but also toward Sunni extremism, might end up distracting from what he wants to get done economically,” said a former Obama administration official, referring to “Vision 2030,” MbS’ signature economic and social reform agenda.

Mr. Malley, who has met MbS, said his attitude toward Iran “stems from his strongly felt conviction that for too long the kingdom has been a punching bag, a passive witness to Iranian action, true or assumed, in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia’s own eastern Province”. “His view is that Saudi Arabia absorbed those blows and now there’s no reason to absorb them any more,” Mr. Malley said.

That dovetails neatly with Mr. Trump who has said Iran promotes evil and is a key source of funding and support for militant groups. MbS has also developed a close relationship with Mr. Trump’s influential son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who at 36 is close in age to him.

MbS’ “desire to confront or even defeat Iran has appeal in the White House, where the crown prince has done an admirable job forging a relationship with the Kushners, who are of his generation”, said the U.S. official.

Mr. Kushner and his wife, Ivanka Trump, had dinner with MbS when the U.S. President visited Riyadh in May 2017, the first stop on Mr. Trump’s maiden international visit.

Another senior administration official told Reuters that while Washington did not have advance warning of MbS’ promotion, it could see it coming. “This is why the President has tried to foster good relations with him,” the official said.

‘Germany spied on White House’

Share

Germany’s foreign intelligence service long spied on numerous official and business targets in the United States, including the White House, Spiegel weekly reported on Thursday.

The magazine said it had seen documents showing that the intelligence service, the BND, had a list of some 4,000 so-called selector keywords for surveillance between 1998 and 2006.

Institutions spied on

These included telephone or fax numbers, as well as e-mail addresses at the White House as well as the U.S. Finance and Foreign ministries. Other monitoring targets ranged from military institutions, including the U.S. Air Force or the Marine Corps, space agency NASA to civic group Human Rights Watch. Hundreds of foreign embassies as well as international organisations such as the International Monetary Fund were not spared, Spiegel said.

The BND declined comment in the Spiegel report.

Germany had reacted with outrage when information leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed in 2013 that U.S. agents were carrying out widespread tapping worldwide, including of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s mobile phone.

Volte-face

Ms. Merkel, who grew up in communist East Germany where state spying on citizens was rampant, declared repeatedly that “spying among friends is not on” while acknowledging Germany’s reliance on the U.S. in security matters. But to the great embarrassment of Germany, it later emerged that the BND helped the NSA spy on European allies.

Berlin last June approved new measures, including greater oversight, to rein in the BND following the scandal.

In a movie which is so much in focus, lot of people like to read and find something interesting about the shoot. But, we never wish to read something like this coming from the sets of Superstar Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Kaala- that caused the death of a human.

The shoot of Rajinikanth’s starrer Kaala has reportedly killed a unit member, who’s taking part in erecting set for second schedule of the movie in Chennai. Unfortunately, the saddening incident took place when that unit member, whose name is not known, came in contact with a short-circuit wire while working on the sets.

The cast & crew of Kaala are in a state of shock, and the makers are in a perplexed state whether to continue shoot or go for a short break. Understandably, fans of Rajinikanth mourned the demise of unit member and wish no such incidents on sets of superstar’s films.

Bank rolled by Dhanush under Wunderbar films, Pa Ranjith of Kabali fame is helming this mafia-based flick. Huma Qureshi is the female lead in the film.

‘Chandrababu is Bhallaladeva & Jagan is Baahubali’

Share

Being an accomplished actress before foraying into politics, Roja has the knack of taking movie references to make her political speeches more rhetoric.

In yet another instance of taking potshots at TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu, the YSRCP Nagari MLA has called him Bhallaladeva of Baahubali series. If Babu is Bhalla, who is Baahubali? easy to guess rights? Its YCP Chief, YS Jagan. Well, there are two Baahubalis rights? Amarendra and Mahendra?

Roja said that late YSR is big Baahubali and Jagan is small Baahubali. She further alleged that Babu aka Bhalla has always played tricks to overpower both YSR and Jagan and that he will be facing humiliating defeat in the upcoming 2019 elections.

She even called Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Sivagami. Wouldn’t it have been a complete Political Baahubali if she named who Kattappa and Devasena were?

At least 34 killed in suicide blast in southern Afghanistan

Share

A car bomb exploded outside a bank in Lashkar Gah, capital of the southern Afghan province of Helmand on Thursday, killing and wounding dozens of civilians and members of the security forces waiting to collect their pay, officials said.

Omar Zwak, spokesman for the provincial governor, said at least 34 people had been killed and more than 60 wounded, including members of the police and army, civilians and staff of the New Kabul Bank branch where the attack took place.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack but insurgent groups, including the Taliban, have in the past targeted banks where police, soldiers and other government employees collect their pay.

Security is worsening across Afghanistan almost three years after international troops ended their main combat mission.

Emergency workers and passers-by tried to help the injured, who were strewn among the dead. Ambulances and private cars ferried the victims to hospitals.

The blast, which also damaged nearby shops, came as Afghans were preparing to celebrate next week’s Eid al-Fitr festival marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

While high-profile attacks in the capital, Kabul, have made headlines, dozens of similar incidents in provincial centres over recent months have steadily undermined confidence in President Ashraf Ghani’s divided government.

Helmand, one of the world’s major opium growing centres and a traditional heartland of the Taliban, has been under particularly heavy pressure with large parts of the province in the hands of the insurgents

Trailer Talk : Rana’s Nene Raju Nene Mantri

Rana Daggubati, who made his acting debut with ‘Leader’, a political film in which he essayed a classy CM, is back with another political film, and this time, he is essaying a completely contrasting character, a massy one.

The striking trailer of Rana’s upcoming film ‘Nene Raju Nene Manthri’ has been unveiled and it looks to have the potential to finally give the macho actor his much needed and highly deserving solo blockbuster. The story is about a joyous young man who decides to become the CM when a tragic incident shatters his happy-going life.

Rana’s towering screen presence itself makes one sit and watch this promising trailer. Kajal looks drop-dead gorgeous in sarees and her chemistry with Rana looks extremely adorable. The sexy Catherine Tresa is paying a haughty media baron and her character looks to have negative shades.

Dialogues such as ‘100 mandi MLA lani theesukelli star hotel lo pedithe saayanthraniki nene CM’ (a suggestive reference to contemporary politics) and ‘Pamuki putta kavalante cheemale kada kashtapadali’ hints about film’s core plot and hero’s character.

Director Teja, who had been churning flop and flop for over a decade, seems to be back with a promising political thriller. The visuals are striking and the background score is right on the money.

Naidu Announces Nandyala TDP Candidate

Share

Bringing down the curtains on the months-long speculations, AP CM and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu has announced the party candidate for the by-election in Nandyala Assembly constituency. Bhuma Brahmananda Reddy, the son of Bhuma Nagireddy’s elder brother Sekhar Reddy, has been named as the party candidate for upcoming bypoll in Nandyala.

The decision has been made after TDP’s constituency incharge Shilpa Mohan Reddy, who earlier contested on TDP ticket in 2014, has switched his loyalties to YSR Congress. Amidst reports that Shilpa would be fielded from YSRCP, TDP has announced Bhuma Brahmanda Reddy as its candidate.

Brahmanada Reddy has spoken to media soon after the announcement came. Expressing his gratitude to his uncle Bhuma Nagi Reddy and aunt Shobha Nagi Reddy, Brahmananda Reddy said that development of Nandyala and fulfilling of promises made by Bhuma Nagi Reddy for Nandyala people top the agenda. Responding to a question over Shilpa leaving the TDP, Brahmanda Reddy said that it has no affect on party as several senior leaders like SPY Reddy, AV Subba Reddy, Farooq are in TDP and he added that most importantly the people of Nandyala are with TDP.

Meanwhile, TDP has appealed to the opposition parties not to contest by-election to make it unanimous election. If a by-election is facilitated with the death of its sitting MLA, the practice has been to elect a member from the bereaved family. However, considering special conditions, looks like YSRCP is likely to filed its candidate for the election since technically Bhuma won on YSRCP ticket and later joined the ruling TDP.
