Ghazi Movie Review – 3.5/5

Share

Ghazi directed by debutante Sankalp Reddy is India’s first underwater war film that tries to decode the mystery behind the sinking of Pakistani submarine PNS Ghazi during the Indo-Pak war of 1971. This is a fiction story based upon real events. What stand out in Ghazi is its production design and the deft handling of the director with limited resources.

Story :

Submarine S 21 is sent on a classified mission to disrupt the plans of Pakistan naval army that is trying to target INS Vikrant, the first aircraft carrier for Indian Navy. Rann Vijay Singh (Kay Kay Menon) a rebellious Captain who wants to eliminate the enemy at the sight should be controlled by young officer Arjun Varma (Rana) as any amateur action could trigger the Indo-Pak war. Despite Arjun’s denial, Captain Rann Vijay launches a torpedo at Ghazi, the Pakistani submarine that is sent to create problems on the Indian east coast. The torpedo misses by a whisker and that results in the attack between both the submarines.

Performances:

Rana is pretty impressive as the Navy officer. His well built body and demeanor suits the character to the T. He has matured as an actor and that can be seen in his confrontation scenes with Kay Kay Menon. Bollywood actor Kay Kay Menon hams a bit, but is effective as the rebellious captain. Taapsee has little role to play in this film. She is okay within her limitations. Atul Kulkarni has a lengthy role and does justice to it. Actors like Satyadev and Bharath Reddy lends good support to the principal cast. Rahul Singh is good as the Captain of Pakistani submarine Ghazi. Late actor Om Puri is good in his brief role.

Technicalities:

Sankalp Reddy took a challenging script for his debut film. It is a difficult film to make as it an entirely new genre to Indian cinema. War at sea is an exciting subject on paper but it would need great amount of conviction to make it an engaging film. It is clear that Sankalp has done his homework for understanding how the submarines operate and all. He did a commendable job as a director and is a fresh talent to watch out for.

Music by K is one of the biggest plus for this film. Background score builds the tension and engrosses the audience into the film. Cinematographer Madhie is at the top of his game as he comes up with a stellar work in making this war film look real and authentic. Production design is top class and the writing is decent. Editor could have fine tuned the first half that needed a bit of trimming. Producers should be lauded for backing such a novel idea and providing sufficient funds to manufacture a quality product.

Thumbs Up:

  • War at Sea backdrop
  • Production design
  • Cinematography
  • Direction

Thumbs Down:

  • Over the top drama
  • Leisurely paced first half

Analysis:

Ghazi is a daring attempt from the director and its producers as well. There are a few reference films in the world cinema that are made in this subgenre, but no filmmaker from India has ever attempted to take up this subject. Ghazi is a difficult film to make and envision as the total story runs in a cramped up space with a handful of characters.

There is no scope for deviation from the proceedings as all the characters will be focused on their job. So to create drama with a few characters and to engage the audience with whatever happens in that ‘space’ is challenging to the filmmaker. Also he needs to educate the audience regarding the subject as most of the people don’t know how it works. Efforts have gone into understanding the makings of a submarine, firing of torpedoes and the duties of a captain and his subordinates.

More than ninety percent of the story happens under water and inside a submarine. So the production design has to be perfect to make us believe that we are watching real action in a real submarine. Technically, Ghazi is brilliant as every technician has come up with a wonderful output. Clearly, the director has limited resources compared to the multibillion dollar war movies that Hollywood makes.

Despite limited resources and an unfamiliar premise, director and his team of writers have done a wonderful job in creating engaging drama. The film is not short of action despite its limitations. Firing of torpedoes, explosions under water and the strategies that the Indian officers apply to counter the enemies are excellent to watch. Director makes us watch the battle with bated breath in spite of the predictability associated with it. Only complaint is its leisurely paced first half that takes time to get going.

Second half of the film is very engrossing with lots of nail biting moments. The finale could have been better though. It is too predictable and cinematic. Barring few hitches, Ghazi is a film that cannot be missed. Films like these are not only rare but also make us proud as they are right up there with the standard of world cinema.

Verdict: Gazillion times ahead.

At 24, She Debuted As Beautiful Mother

Actress Pragathi is known for her mother roles in Telugu films and she’s one of those highly paid character artists as well who charges lakhs per day. But her turn to mother role after trying her stint as heroine in Tamil films makes us surely wonder in awe.

Though Pragathi is against going glamorous for films, she acted in seven Tamil films including Bhagyaraja’s Veetla Visheshanga as leading lady. Then she got married and turned to TV serials at the age of 24. Somehow for unknown reasons, Suresh Productions has decided to cast this actress as a mother to the then 18-year-old Aarti Agarwal in “Nuvvu Leka Nenu Lenu” movie.

As Pragathi has seen that her chances as heroine are totally closed, now that she’s both married and acting in TV serials, senior actress Sri Vidya persuaded her to pick up this chance which could help her settle as a character actress. Half-heartedly she agreed to don the beautiful mother’s hat and then rest is history.

Pragathi enjoyed playing mother to Aarti then, later she played the same role to Allu Arjun in Gangotri and Ram Charan in Chirutha as well. Sharing her thoughts, she says that life is not about what we plan but accepting the things coming to us. Till date she acted in 80+ films.

Telugu Man Behind Jaya-Sasi's Downfall

Share

jayal

Not many of the present generation are aware of the man behind the downfall of Jayalalithaa and VK Sasikala. The man in question is none other than Marri Chenna Reddy, the former governor of Tamil Nadu with whom Jayalalithaa had serious differences.

It all started when Marri Chenna Reddy was appointed as the Tamil Nadu Governor in 1993. When Jayalalithaa sworn in as the CM for the first-time in 1991 June, Bhishma Narain Singh was the Governor of the state. But on May 31st, 1993, Marri Chenna Reddy was appointed as the Governor of Tamil Nadu by then PM PV Narasimha Rao. Since then Jayalalithaa had serious differences with Marri and it was never-ending clash.

Given that both Marri & Jaya were the two headstrong personalities, the twain had been on the warpath.

On one-side, Marri was a strong man who had successfully tackled critical problems like separate statehood of Telangana and share great bond with then PM PV Narasimha Rao. Marri had proved himself as successful governor in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. Contrary to the normal assumption that role of Governor in federal state is ‘nominal’ and ‘honorary’, Marri Chenna Reddy had proved otherwise by leaving an indelible mark as Governor in both states and was appointed as TN Governor by PM.

On other side, Jayalalithaa too was an iron lady and has great individuality. She was of the opinion that Governor shouldn’t intervene much in the state’s governance. This had led to the great differences.

Jayalalithaa had allegedly taken Marri “lightly” and said to had “insulted” him on many occasions. At one stage, she had skipped Governor’s inaugural speech before Assembly session and this had invited wrath of Reddy.

Reddy too started taking serious note on the allegations of Opposition parties against Jayalalithaa and state government. Usually, governors don’t consider such issues seriously. But Reddy didn’t leave a leaf unturn to trouble then CM Jaya.

At one time, Jaya had went to Delhi and complained to then PM PV Narasimha Rao against Chenna Reddy and sought his removal. But PV didn’t pay heed to Jaya’s request as he is aware of Chenna Reddy’s capabilities. All these have further aggregated the differences between Jaya and Marri.

During this situation, the lavish wedding of Jaya’s foster son Sudhakaran flared up by media, Opposition. Jaya’s disproportionate assets became talking point. Exactly then, Janata Party’s Subramanya Swamy has brought Jaya’s DA assets to governor’s notice and sought his permission to probe into Jaya’s assets. Subramanian Swamy had slapped case against Jaya, her aide Sasikala and others in DA case.

Normally in such cases, Governor’s won’t act fast and won’t give permissions to court to prosecute a Chief Minister. But setting a new precedent in India and for first of its kind, a state Governor has given permission to probe into allegations against sitting Chief Minister. This led to great debate. Jaya had appealed to several courts against Governor and their feud but nothing came in her favour. Courts have started probe. The case has been shifted to Karnataka for impartial probe.

After 20-years-long probe, Jaya and Sasikala were convicted in DA case by Karanataka High Court. Jaya was the first CM to be convicted. She had to resign as CM and went to prison along with Sasikala. During this lean period, Jaya had appointed O. Panneerselvan as the CM. Though she’s back as CM with slight relief, the ongoing case in Supreme Court had been worrying Jayalalithaa.

It’s buzzed that these cases have resulted in ill-health of Jaya who later succumbed on Dec 5, 2017 after 75 days of struggle in Apollo. Jaya’s demise has a lasting impact on AIADMK and it even divided AIADMK as both Sasikala and O. Pannerselvam have been waging swords against each other. With Sasikala now declared as convict by Supreme Court and sent to jail to complete her sentence of 3 years and six months, she stands unfit to contest polls for another 6 years thus blocking Sasikala to contest polls for 10 years. This is seen as “end-of-road” for Sasikala’s political ambitions.

Now that Palaniswamy, Sasikala’s loyalist, became CM of Tamil Nadu and Jaya’s protege OPS was stamped as anti-party man, AIADMK is crippled in the state thus strengthening opposition DMK. This is the story of how a Dravidian party suffered a death blow due to a Telugu man.

Once a strong enemy to his father and erstwhile AP CM YS Rajasekhara Reddy has been joined YSR Congress party President YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s bandwagon.

Strong TDP leader from Kurnool district in Rayalaseema region Gangula Prabhakar Reddy along with his strong followers switched loyalties to YSR Congress in the presence of Jagan.

Gangula has been maintaining distance from ruling Telugu Desam ever since YSR Congress leader Bhuma Nagireddy from the same district joined TDP. Since then, Bhuma has been given importance in the TDP and Reddy was completely sidelined.

Incidentally, Gangula was also TDP in-charge to Allagadda assembly constituency from where Bhuma daughter Akila Priya won election. Bhuma has been interfering in the party affairs in his daughter constituency which did not go well in Gangula group in the last one year. To protect his political future, Gangula forced to join YSR Congress, leaders said.

When Telugus stand in support of TN Governor

Telugu associations in Tamil Nadu have strongly condemned the criticism of TN Governor Vidya Sagara Rao by the state politicians.

Alleging that criticizing Telugu personalities is very common in Tamil Nadu, a senior leader of Telugu associations said that the guv has done what he had to according to norms of the Constitution.

‘When the guv delayed his response amidst the chaos of the state politics, sasikala camp criticized him. When he finally asked Palaniswamy to form the govt, ops camp has resorted to criticism. When a leader shows the support of majority (124 MLAs in this case), the guv is bound to take a decision in his favor. He however has given 15 days to ops to prove his support and form the govt,’ TN Telugu leader said.

If the guv makes further delay, law & order situation in Tamil Nadu will get worse. People and leaders need to welcome the governor’s decision,’ he added.

Movie Unsold. Big Gamble by Producers

Share

rana

Of late, producers are not taking much risk and selling the theatrical rights of their films to distributors outright or sharing-basis prior to film’s release. Especially, the trend is followed by big-budget films who’re investing big monies while it’s slowly catching up with small and medium-budget filmmakers who are tempted to pocket profits much before the film’s release.

However, defying this, the makers of Ghazi have not sold the film’s theatrical rights neither in Telugu, Tamil or Hindi and has released the film on their own. Both Matinee Entertainment and PVP Cinema have not sold the film despite getting good pre-release buzz for the film. Even in Hindi, the film is being distributed by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions as part of the understanding and producers themselves are ready to take the risk.

Not just domestic market. The producers haven’t sold the film’s rights in US and overseas markets as well. By releasing on own, makers are playing big gamble. Also, the film’s satellite rights weren’t sold and put the talks on hold as makers are waiting for the film’s release.

This is not all. Even film’s premieres are being screened in all major cities for the past few days. Nonetheless, there is no guarantee of a film clicking at box office, though it is lauded by critics and a section of audiences. Still, the makers choose to release on their own.

When contacted, sources close to production house clarified that the makers are confident on the final product and decided to go for own release.

Nagababu Vs Posani Coming Up!!

Share

posani

Of course, earlier comedian Posani Krishnamurali sailed with Prajarajyam boat and lost big time in elections after contesting as MLA candidate. But he’s not getting ready to clash with mega brother on that political note, here is something very interesting happening.

If there is any program that brought huge fame and money to Nagababu in the recent times, definitely that is comedy show Jabardasth. As a judge of the show, Nagababu enjoys that unique respect and also shared his style of philosophy whenever he speaks. Till date, many other TV channels tried to mimic this particular comedy show but failed. But now, there comes a competitor.

Taking up senior contestants of Jabardasth like Dhanraj, Venu and Raghu, Star MAA is now coming up with a program named “Desamudurlu”. This is another Jabardasth kind of stage comedy which in turn is copied from the likes of Comedy Central and Kapil Sharma’s other shows. On this show, Posani is making his debut as a judge and he’s likely to tease the contestants and audiences with his comic satires.

For being a writer and an actor as well, surely Posani will dominate the show easily and that’s being seen as major competition to Nagababu’s small screen presence now. If this program is a direct competition to Jabardasth, then Posani is direct competition to Nagababu as well.

Bringing down curtain on huge political drama unfolding in Tamil Nadu, Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao has invited Palaniswamy to form the government. With this, Sasikala’s CM pick and AIADMK legislature party leader Palaniswamy is all set to be the next chief minister of Tamil Nadu.

Governor Vidyasagar has given 15 days time to Palaniswamy to prove the majority in the house.

The press release issued by Raj Bhavan of Tamil Nadu reads, “Thiru CH. Vidyasagar Rao, Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu has today (16.02.2017) appointed Thiru Edappadi K. Palaniswamy, Party Headquarters Secretary of the AIADMK as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and invited him to form the Ministry at the earliest.”

“Hon’ble Governor has also requested the Chief Minister-Designate, Thiru Edappadi K. Palaniswamy to seek the vote of confidence of the Assembly within fifteen days.”

This is seen as a set back to rebel O. Panneerselvam who had been trying to restore the lost throne after his resignation was accepted by the Governor earlier.

Why Filmmakers eagerly Waiting for Metro?

Share

metro

The inauguration of Hyderabad Metro Rail project is long pending. The TS Govt. has so far deferred many deadlines due to some issues regarding permissions and contractor. It seems that not just the common man but Telugu filmmakers are also keenly waiting for the Metro inauguration.

Filmmakers always stay in hunt of new locations to give a fresh feel to viewers. Almost every inch of Hyderabad city has already been explored in our films so the new Metro stations are being seen by makers as fresh places to shoot films.

Earlier, filmmakers used to think twice before shooting at MMTS stations in hyderabad given how crowded they were and the difficulties in getting permissions. However, as the new Metro project has brought in umpteen number of stations, the crowd is expected to be lesser and the stations will be equipped with modern amenities to give a rich feel on silver screen. Several Telugu films have earlier used MMTS stations in their films effectively, the best example is the stunning action sequence and a few rom-com scenes that were shot in ‘Pokiri’.

This enthusiasm of Telugu filmmakers will help the TS govt and L&T too. First, the govt. can earn some bucks by allotting permissions and the most important, free publicity for the new Metro as movies are often rated the best source of promoting brands.

Ram Charan Manipulated Khaidi Collections?

Share

mega

More than Chiru’s performance, Khaidi No.150 collections were the most talked about. The Box Office numbers of Khaidi have dominated the headlines and debates. After officially announcing Rs 108 Crore gross, team Khaidi No. 150 has gone into oblivion and stopped sharing the figures. Even the much awaited “Thank You” function of Khaidi that was planned to organise on grand scale was cancelled only to avoid mentioning any further figures, say sources.

Now, here is the twist in the tale. Khaidi producer Ram Charan has reportedly quoted low Box Office figures when asked by the Income-Tax officials. According to Deccan Chronicle, Ram Charan said to have quoted 75 Crore share for Khaidi while the budget was pegged at Rs 60 Crore. This is not all. Ram Charan has reportedly told I-T sleuths that Chiru was paid a remuneration of Rs 20 Crore while director Vinayak was paid Rs 10 Crore.

Now these figures are raising eye balls and setting tongues wagging. Actually, the BO figures and statistics doing rounds in market and social media is totally different. Khaidi No. 150 has crossed over Rs 100 Crore share and stood as industry hit next only to epic Baahubali.

Has Ram Charan lessen the original collections to evade IT officials or has Khaidi team circulated the increased BO figures to show off and claim records? Either ways, producer Ram Charan appears to have manipulated the numbers. Well, only Ram Charan knows the truth.

In 33000 acres, 900 acres for Babus Houses

Even as Opposition parties are yet to cool down their attack on AP state government over Land Pooling System (LPS) under which 33,000 acres of land were acquired by the state government, AP Municipal Minister P. Narayana has shocked one and all with his statement on allocation of 900 acres to the ‘babus’, the ministers, MLAs, MLCs and HODs.

Narayana has stated that Administrative Capital would be built in 900 acres of land in Amaravati that includes the quarters of ministers, MLAs, MLCs, HODs. This is not all. Narayana has also given a “bumper” offer to ministers who’re willing to build own houses in the region and said 150 to 200 acres is specially allotted for them. And said this would meet the requirement of ‘ministers, MLAs, MLCs and HODs’.

Well, but the question is what about the common man or Aam Janatha. Narayana…Narayana!

Rs 20,000 Fine For Charging Rs 20 More!!

Share

water

That might sound like a funny news but in reality if people start revolting at the unusual pricing that are being undertaken by so many food joints in cities like Hyderabad, then the practise of exploiting customers with over-pricing will surely come down.

Way back on 27th July, 2015, Hyderabad based Sarvi Hotel, Banjara Hills has charged ₹ 40 from a customer named Ch. Kondaiah for a water bottle whose MRP is ₹ 20. When he questioned about the same, the hotel said it’s customary for most luxury hotels to charge that way. Of course, it’s true, but it is illegal.

When Kondaiah approached District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum II to take action against the food court, the management of food court quoted ‘Principles of Hospitality Law’ and claimed that a customer should not claim he’s overcharged for the price that is mentioned in menu already. Also they stated that Kondaiah has to pay for the ambience.

Later when the forum is not happy with the hotel’s reply, Sarvi also claimed that Kondaiah never visited their place and that bill was picked from someone else. However Kondaiah showed all proofs that he indeed visited the place and had food on that fateful day. The Forum finally stated that Sarvi Hotel could fix any rate for the food items they have prepared, but for not the packaged products that already have a fixed MRP.

Due to violating Legal Metrology (packaged commodities) Rules 2011, the forum directed Sarvi to pay ₹20,000 to Kondaiah towards damages and also another ₹ 5000 for other costs. Also the hotel (food court) is ordered to give back the excess ₹ 20 they have collected from him.

Achari America Velithey

manchu

Though there is nothing like leaders of any caste and community reacting to characters in films, somehow sometime back there is this strong resentment growing among everyone. In 2012, when Vishnu Manchu’s “Denikaina Ready” movie released, it lead to a havoc.

Few heads of Brahmin community have verbally attacked that Manchu Vishnu has degraded their caste in the film and hurt their sentiments. While some have went ahead to perform Sarda Karmalu for him, some formed a group and mobbed his house in Film Nagar. While the issue got settled down later, later there are many such casteist issues being brought up whenever a film of a big star is releasing.

And now, Manchu Vishnu is said to be doing a film titled “Achari America Velithey” where Brahmanandam is playing the parallel lead alongside him. Though Brahmi is known for playing Brahmin priest roles many a times, he never faced any problem. But in these volatile times are something where people are looking everything through a magnifying glass, there should be no scope for any controversy. Inside the film, he’s reprising his role like that of in Adhurs and Vishnu will be seen as his accomplice.

Many industrywalas felt that creative freedom should not be curbed in the name of castes and religions, though one should not cross the law- no disturbance to communal harmony please!!
